Rugs.....LOTS of rugs. |
If the floor is finished, it's just going to need mopping. Water only, no need for any chemicals and although people think "oil soap" is wonderful for wood floors, I think the residue isn't worth it.
If the floor is unfinished......well, I'd finish it. Oh yeah - and rugs. Lots of rugs. |
I always have paw prints, no carpet allergys |
Steph, take it from me...there is going to be NO way to keep your floors perfect looking......especially near the door that he is going to use a lot.......
rugs help especially in the family room area and by the exterior doors...also keep a rag by the back door and wipe paws before coming in..and maybe by his water bowl...does the laundry room have tile? you might want to put his water bowl in there... I clean the wood floors with either murphys oil soap and hot water OR 3/4 hot water to 1/4 windex (yes it really works)...the key is to wring out the rag really well! You cant quite get that with a mop.....also go to home depot and buy a pair of knee pads....they are knee savers....you might want to put barnes outside when you wash the floor, as panda will follow me around and try to lick my face, arms, legs etc.... |
Thanks for the suggestions! Yeah, we are going to have to get a bunch of rugs for sure! My biggest dilemma is where to put the Barney Zone (ie his food and water) since all the downstairs is wood. The laundry is vinyl, but it's upstairs...And there are some steep steps into the garage...I guess we'll figure it out! |
We have mostly wood, and just follow Izzie with a towel after she drinks. Her bowls are in the laundry room on vinyl...so we are saved a little there. We have a rug leading out of the laundry room so most drips go on that. I would suggest, if you aren't already doing so, getting a cute towel/mat/placemat or something to put under his food and water bowl to catch the water that drips around the bowl...we find that the most water is dripping right as Izzie takes her head away from the bowl so a mat or towel underneath really helps. |
the pad under the water bowl is a must....we went super high end......we permantly ''borrowed'' a brown plastic food tray from mcdonalds....and put a towel on top of that.... |

You can buy these channeled rubber mats to set the food and water on. If this link doesn't work, you can look on the petsmart website, under dogs and feeders, bowls and accessories, it's called "aquaflow placemat". http://tinyurl.com/ytzprz Keeps any extra water they slop on the mat. If you have a super-slopper for whom the mat is not enough like I do ( ), then put their water bowl inside a small plastic storage tub. Then all the water they slop goes in the tub. |

Too Funny! |
I find a rubbermaid boot tray works well for water bowls. Has drainage that way and dries better then when the water gets stuck under the bowl.
Placemats too, they can be throw in the wash daily, or whenever you do laundry etc... For hardwood floors, when i re finish mine, I'm going to use a hard finish polyurethane. Lots of shine, waterproof and more durable for dog nails. |
I have washable (called easy care) area rugs from JC Penney, They are an absolute must!
I have them in all sizes (small ones for water bowls). |
