When do heat cycles begin??
I have no experience with "cycles" since I always spay (or neuter) ASAP.... Approximate age? Duration? Anything special I need to do? Will Pearl and Cosmo act differently toward her? They are both fixed. Any special (extra) feedings? Maybe you can tell, I am a very anal person and need to have a plan and be prepared. Thanks for any advice..... also, side subject....What are Withers??? and how do you measure them??? I've been searching and searching websites...I would like to chart Heart's growth. I've been posting alot since I got Heart....I am CLUELESS!!!!!

| We got Sami spayed at 9 months our vet was moving into a new building. And she still had not gone into heat. I heard larger breeds may not go into heat until 10 months not sure of this , just read it some where. I am going to get my male done close to 6 months by laser. |

| When they begin having heat cycles varies a great deal, even within the same litter girls may not start at the same time.
I have heard of some oes females having their first heat by 5 or 6 months, but it's more usual to see it happen after 7 months, usually 9-10 months and some may not even start then. |
Thanks...now I know how to measure her...and I don't have to worry too much about her cycle. I have (alot) of time before then. I thought it was closer to 4-5 months...again..I am learning as I go.

| You should be right for awhile, usually later on around the 9 month mark onwards for the first heat. There all different though some are earlier some are later.
Anyway if she ends up being de-sexed later then always good to have a bitch spayed after 6 months to help not bring on early spay incontinence, just better for them after 6 months of age onwards as they are a little bit more mature then and reduces the chance of spay incontinence then. No special feeding when in heat, just keep the normal diet there. Heat lasts 21 days, they get very messy and when in make sure there supervised all the time when outside to potty. No pottying out the front, pick an area in the back yard to take her too to go. You don't want every dog in the neighbourhood getting a whiff of what is happening or you might have a few dogs hanging around out the front in hope 
The other two should be fine around her although your male even though de-sexed might get whiff of what is going on with her and try to mount her. If that happens then seperate them till her heat is over as you don't want a big lug hurting her with trying to jump on her back all the time. When in too, wash the area at least once or twice a week to help keep it clean and fresh as they pong heaps when in. Air freshner in the house or aroma candles works wonders too. 
If you run your hand down the back of the neck, as you get to the base of the neck, there is two pointy notches there on her back, that is the withers.
I know your breeder will give you plenty of advice and a guide there with her if she does come into heat. With my first sheepie girl, I rang the breeder and said "She's In"  and got plenty of advice, instructions and support there as I had no idea the first time around with a sheepie girl in heat |
