Poopereater!

Hey all! I don't know what to do. Remember Mopsey's poop eating episode? I thought that was all solved. Noooo, she now found a new place where the kittens poop and digs it up and eats it! Aaaahhhh! Its so gross! We made a little pooping area for them, but they found a new spot that they like, and we can't really seperate it from the rest of the yard. I WISH they would just use their litter box! What else can I do to make her stop eating it? She has free access to outside, because we are not home 7 hours a day, and the potty training went a lot better with her just going out when she needs to. Now, we can't be there with her when she does her business 24/7. She doesn't eat her own, just theirs??? :x I am at my witts end... try smelling poopy puppy breath!!!! whaaa! :(

A lot of dogs eat cat poop. I haven't found a way to stop them, other than trying to find a way to keep it where they can't get it. My cats don't go outside, so they only use a litterbox, and I so far keep the dogs in the kitchen gated off. When they come into the livingroom with us they will make every attempt to get to the "cat crunchies" . When the dogs are allowed free roam in the house I will have to find somewhere else for the litterbox, I think I'm going to cut a hole in the bottom of the basement door for the cats to fit through but not the dogs. LOL
*sigh* I thought so. Well, I dont know what to do. I have feeling that she had that peeing in her sleep incidents due to the fact that she ate cat poop and got some sort of an infection. Its been cured since then, antibiotics, but I am afraid that now that she is back to her poop eating days, the peeing will also begin agin. I am going to attempt and put rocks or pebles in that area, so the cats won't go there anymore. Although, I am sure that they will find another spot convenient to Mopsey's habbit. Is there a poop re-hab around. LOL
willow if sky is anything like jack, you'd find her goofy head stuck in the hole you cut.
We had a cat for 17 and a half years and they all liked the litter box. I kept it in my bathroom and only the cat could get in it. Well Fuzzy decided he wanted to use the bathroom closer to the rest of the house it was like a tootsie roll festival. All three of my sheepies enjoyed this treat. I got a litter box in the shape of a triangle and with a cover and made it so the dog could not get into it, even if the dog got to the opening of the litter box the opening was to small for their heads. Good Luck!
That's a good idea shaggydog, I had never thought of that.... if I had normal sized cats I would try it, but Winston is a 25 lb cat. Not just fat, but huge. He's equally proportioned, but is so long and tall, he has a hard time fitting in the jumbo sized litterbox with the hood. LOL
Stacey, i would suggest to put in a cat door in the bathroom or the basement. This way, it closes behind him and the dog is not too encouraged to follow. I was worried that Mopsey's head would get stuck in the cat door, but she was ok. Sky might fit through it for a while, but when she gets bigger it won't be a problem. I hole might get them too curious to stick their head in it. LOL Ed, Jack sounds like a handfool LOL just like Mopsey!!!! :P
My Bosse used to eat kitty poop when he was a puppy, it is due a lack of some sort of vitamins. A good substitute that really helps in that case is pineapple - I know several dogs, including mine who lost their interest in poop eating after canned pineapple was added to their menu.
There is a certain thing in pineapples that can't be found anywhere else, I can't remember the name of it, it starts with a B I think. It is known to cause weight loss though, a lot of diets include it for that reason.
Hmmm, pineapple, hah? Ok, I am game! LOL I am gonna buy some tomorrow and give her a few pieces a day. I sure hope she likes it! Thanks so much! I was wondering about the vitamin thing...but i give her vitamins now. Guess whatever is missing is not in them. Did I mention that i LOVE this forum!!!! :D
LOL, my husband said something about pinapple's being good for weight loss today and I laughed saying so you have been reading the forum, huh? My puppers also ate cat poo until we put all of our litter boxes behind a door and put a cat door in. None of our cats are allowed out unless harnessed and leashed. If they ever got out would take awhile to figure out what our sandbox is for. LOL
I wish you well, Marley, the breath thing and puppy kisses have a whole new meaning after eating cat or dog poo. 8O :?

Oh and I love the avatar! Mopsey is adorable. Give her a belly rub for me. Stormi and co.
I know this is rather silly - but since we're on the subjects of dog eatting kitty poop - I thought I would add my two cents in - since I've read lots of books on why dogs do this!

Cats are truely carnivores - take a look at their teeth sometime - they don't lie! While we feed them lots of crunchy food with wheat, corn, and all sorts of other fillers - they get a lot of nutrients and other crud that their bodies just can't process very well - so it gets sent out in their poop. Since dogs can do well on meat and some fillers (but hopefully not a lot of fillers!) The nutrients in the cat poop is like some sort of delicious doggy treat. If cats eat a more meat based diet - there are less fillers and less nutrients that the cat can't absorb - so there isn't much of a reason to eat kitty poop anymore... of course... dogs will be dogs... but the poop would be far less tantilizing.

Anyways - since you probably don't want to change your cats' diets - since it might not help anyway... My suggestion would be is to start keeping your cats indoors if you can - it's safer there anyway. If you can't - the cats might be going to the bathroom in this particular spot because they might feel threatened indoors with doggy sneak attacks. Always make sure that the litter box is safe and away from the doggies all times.

If you use a clumping litter - or any other litter for that matter - that also might cause problems with your doggies tummy for other reasons.

My older cat would lap up some of his litter when it got stuck between his paws - and he would barf up yellowish mucus all the time - along with dark flecks which I later found out was blood. 8O He would also have bloody stools. We couldn't find anything wrong with him either... it was crazy! I never noticed him actually consuming his litter until I read a couple articles:

http://www.swheatscoop.com/safety.html

When I heard about swheat scoop (suggested by a cat breeder) - I thought that wheat litter was a pretty cool idea. You can flush it and everything - then I found out how bad some litters could be for my cat... and found many of my cat's sympotoms were the same! I imediatly switched litters... and... no more barfing up yellow gunk and no more bloody poop or blood in his spittle when throwing up.

I can only imagine what it might do to dogs!

Sorry about the long speach about kitty cats - I've been visiting forums and info pages so much I feel like a well of useless information hehe!
We also use swheat scoop. I can't say enough good things about it. The odor is brought way down, and believe me with 4 huge cats, that means something. We have used it with no problem to our septic system. It flushes down nicely. If for some reason we have to wait a couple of days instead of scooping daily, it still smell nice and fresh in our closet. When our baby kittens start litter training it is safe for them to nibble on as well. I also agree with keeping cats and kittens inside. They are so much safer. Good luck, Stormi
Hi Willowsprite, Fuzzy was an 18 pound orange striped cat. This litterbox was big, once we solved that problem the dog all of them liked to clean his butt for him!!!! LOL
lol...eeweeww
I second the eeewewww......!

If you can get the cats to use the litter box, get one with a cover/door to stop Mops from getting in. We have the Booda Dome for our kittie--it's the biggest damn cat box in the world. But in a few weeks, Pooh will not be able to get even his head in there.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestion! Well, the litter box is safe in the bathroom and Mopsey can't get to it. She only likes the outdoor poop. I have to say that I like that my kittens can go out. We have a small yard (big for NYC) and its fenced in with a 7' fence all around with same height gates that open from the inside. They really love it out there! They play and run and have a lot of fun. So I want them to have access to outside. The poop eating thing is something I can solve, hopefully!!! LOL We are planning on putting some gravel in the area of the yard that they go. They have a little fenced in area for doing their business, but they seem to go in a different spot lately. :? A place Mopsey can get to...
According to the vet they smell undigested meat in the poop. His suggestion (and working so far) was to put meat tenderizer on the food. This aids the digestion of the food. Since it works for dogs eating dog poop-maybe sprinkling it on the cats food would help make their poop not so appealing for the dog.
Much luck!
To turn the dogs off from cat poop the cat must eat the pineapple I would be very careful what you give the cat.
Well, tenderizer is an enzym from what I understand, and I don't want to give them anything that might harm them. Oh, I thought that the dog is supposed to eat the pineapple for the vitamins that she is lacking? Did I misunderstand? :?
Interestingly, there is an enzyme in pineapple called "papain" that is a meat tenderizer...
After further review (just like Instant Replay!) I think the enzyme in pineapple is bromelain. Papain comes from papayas. Both are meat-tenderizing enzymes.

Although I do find a few sources listing papain as coming from pineapple, they are probably just as mistaken as I was. Sorry.

But the point stands-- it's interesting that someone suggested feeding a meat tenderizer, and another was talking about pineapple which contains one. Coincidence?
You can also use pumpkin - but it is my understanding that it has to be given to the animal who's poopin' - not the one eatin' it!
The pumpkin has to be fed to the buffet supplier. I would be very careful if cat tootsie rolls are treat.
YUCK!!

The pineapple "b" word is bromelain. It helps digest things. Papaya has papain.....especially unripe papaya. Meat tenerizer is papain.......and has been recommended to feed to animals who have their poop eaten. Normally it's the dog eating their own waste, but like a previous person wrote, the kitty diet leaves "a lot" behind......and our puppers just love those kitty krunchies....they are very high in protein. Cats carry parasites, so be careful.

Now for more skinny: Corprophagia is the proper term for poop eater. IF the dog is loosing weight and constantly hungry, check for pancreatitis. Normal weight dogs: well, they have some bad habits or are bored. Once established, it becomes permanent, nearly impossible to treat.

In addition to meat tenderizer (do they still sell that??) look for papain in the digestive aids or even health food stores. Also try anise oil on the cat's food......(good luck, a dog will fall for that but we know a cat is a tad more picky).
