Can you post a picture of him from the last few days so we can see what you mean? |
It sounds like he's not to standard. Sometimes dogs do come out "weird" for lack of a better term. It sounds like he's an opposite sheepdog.
The real things to watch out for in a case like that are orthopedic problems because if they aren't structurally correct then they may not be structurally sound. Otherwise, he should just be the best Sampson he should be and live out his "weird" life. At least that's what Carl said, he's in the same category as Sampson except he has a bit of a bigger head. I tell Carl that he's a terrible sheepdog but the best Carl ever! |
Beau's Mom (I was going to type BM for short, but that seemed to come out all wrong ),
I'll try to post a pic, but the're from my cell phone so I'm not sure how it will come out. MaxMM.... your response made me laugh. I doubt Sampson is the ideal sheepdog as per the standard, but you're right... he is an absolutely perfect Sampson. |
Could just be the way he's built. Both of our sheepies had/have BIG noggins, and broad chests, but my SIL's sheepie was more like you described, a narrower head with a longer snout. Doesn't sound like a medical issue or anything, just how Sampson is put together.....very cutely.

Does he look like this ????
Junior had a skinny head so we had implants .... Just kidding..LOL Antoinette |
Oh my god I laughed so hard and your coment with that picture Bandaa My 1st sheepy mix went through a strange growing stage she had super long legs and one of her ears flopped over the side of her head. She turned out ok I used to just call it her teenage growth spurt. From your pictures I think she's beautiful - do you have new ones? |

OMG... lol, that's not fair!! I am new so I didn't know about the injury, and therefore I was looking at the picture and trying to make heads or tails of it.... until I scrolled down and read the "just kidding" part. |

I just thought you would enjoy the laugh ! Your boy is beautiful and he will fill in all the weird skinny places before you know it. Junior had banged his head a while back and needed drains to relieve the swelling , but if his was not a strange head I don't know what is ... And he looks totally normal NOW.. ( but Looks doesn't mean is.. ) Antoinette |
LOL
They are all adorable no matter what shape! We keep thinking Fozzie's head looks little in comparison to the rest of his body. Maybe it's just his "puppy cut". |
Seems to me there's a point in the breed standard about not have a doe or deer like head....meaning long and slender. I looked at one of my girl sheepdogs and said , "We should have named you Bambi" but she was a fine, girl. MO's head is narrow, Jack's is more blocky, perhaps closer to standard, but not there either. All the hair covers it up and since they aren't show dogs or breeding stock, who cares.
The puppy to adult year+ brings about some really funny looking dogs. Just be patient, they change frequently. |
Thanks for the words of advice and encouragement. Sampson's head seems skinny, but not long or deer-like (his snout is very squarish and wide). I figure it;s just growing pains, lol. I'm still going to try to take a picture to show what I'm referring to. |
Nigel is a pretty square boy right now...but my last boy was longer all around. The breeder told me if you nueter them too early they get leggy. I am going to try to wait between 8-10 months to nueter Nigel, but that is only if his behavior dictates that I can. Either way they are slow to mature...and still the same lovable personality. |
I'm sorry I had to laugh because we went through the exact same thing.
We had a sheepie Katrina and she went through a phase where she looked like a fox at about 5-7 mos. My husband would always jokingly say I don't think you're a real sheepdog! She turned into a real beauty or always was anyway! Perfect to standard or not they still are perfect in their own right and will still steal your heart regardless. |
