Anyone know if a pound is a pound is a pound? |
|
Gosh - that does sound like a lot, doesn't it? But, as long as it is all healthy stuff and it doesn't bother your digestion, go for it. |
I do all the time, and it just help things flow in the bathroom the next morning.
I personally don't think it's a lot, but I eat a lot. |
There is a lot of water weight and non-digestible fiber in salad, so no... a pound is not a pound. |

Ditto. Just don't get on the scale until you digest though! |
No problem unless you are a diabetic and then that much lettuce could be troublesome. Good for you for staying away from the calorie laden diet killers: the croutons, cheese, bacon bits, heavy dressings, etc. Lettuce is probably 97% water anyway, so if you chewed well, most will end up as liquid with some nice fiber. |
I agree, it's not bad. Cheese and dressing usually add a lot of fat and calories, but you're not going to gain 1 pound from eating 1 pound of veggies.
On the other hand, if you ate a pound of ice cream, you'd probably gain about 20 pounds! How fair is that?! |
Lettuce is bad for diabetics??? |

Tritto!!!! Fat content is way more important than actual food weight. Think about it...... what would be "worse" for you; a pound of french fries or a pound of cauliflower |
A pound's a pound the world round.
Ginny, a pound of cauliflower may be "better for me" but I'd rather eat a pound of french fries. |
What is the point of a salad without the yummy cheese and rance dressing??? I know they're bad for you, but those are my two favorite salad ingredients... |

Generally no, it qualifies as a "free food" generally. Some MDs or nutritionists feel eating 100 grams of a "free food" will raise blood sugar for a type 1 about 50 mg/dl. Since a pound of lettuce is 450+ grams, that's 200 mg/dl! It all falls in the everything in moderation catagory. Eat your salad, 50-100 grams isn't going overboard, but 450 grams sure is...for a diabetic. |
Lettuce is only 2 cals per leaf, and generally uses more energy than that to digest. Some veggies are kind of high in cals and carbs though so I stick to the ones that take more energy to eat than they are worth LOL |
This time of year I don't care. I don't want to cook, chop, etc. Lettuce is fine by me.

Thanks everyone! I don't feel as bad for my salad being so heavy (and I actually didn't eat the whole thing). I don't have diabetes or anything, so no worries on that part.
My salad consisted of: dark, leafy greens spoonful of salsa for dressing a few green pepper slices a few garbanzo beans mushroom slices cucumbers peppercini Those are all pretty good foods, I just wasn't sure if the sheer weight of them would matter! |
Naw, you did fine. All that crunching might have worn out your jaw muscles though. Next time grab a small piece of bread to balance out the garbonzos for a full protein. Beans by themselves aren't complete, you need a grain.
Which is better, 16 ounces of salad or a 16 ounce steak? Yes, they do have steaks that size and larger. You done good. Actually it's been so hot lately all I've wanted is salads...even for breakfast, but I haven't quite given in to that.....yet. |
I had some whole wheat crackers to eat with it, so it was all pretty balanced. This is my typical lunch (I alternate between soup or salad or a half turkey sammie on whole grain...). I was just shocked when it rang up as over a pound and it didn't look like all that much and it just got me to thinking! |
