She trotted into the park like a happy dog, but then laid down and wouldn't move. She tried to drink some water but then immediately threw it up. Her breathing was labored. When it came time to leave, she could not stand up. We finally got her up but she could not walk unaided to the car. My friend called her vet who agreed to meet us at the office, this is now 10:30pm! Abby by this time had not moved from the car and continued her labored breathing and dry heaving. The decision was made that it was Abby's time to go. I so admire that pup who trotted so happily into the park as if to say, if I'm going to go, I'm going to enjoy my last moments! A couple of us from the park stayed with my friend and Abby through the last moments and Abby went to sleep peacefully. It was a sad night. It was the right decision and Abby laid her head on my friend's lap as if to let her know all was OK. I'm glad I was able to be there. I continue to be amazed by our dogs ability to be the strong ones. She knew, I am sure, that this was going to be her last hurrah and did it with all the dignity and aplomb she could muster. Rest in peace, Abby, and you will by joined by your family at the Bridge. |

How sad but it was great that Abby had those last happy memories |
Poor puppy But at least she was loved and cared for at the end!! |
What a brave girl. |
Bridge stories always make me tear up, but this made me smile too. What determination Abby had to enjoy her last hours with family and friends. |
Awww goodbye to sweet Abby. A very sad night but beautiful too. I am moving this post to the Rainbow Bridge section because it is a tribute to her life and to her spirit. |
Abby's determination is admirable! God bless her. |
At least she had one more time at the dog park. Sounds like that is where she wanted to be. Rest in peace, Abby. |
This is so sad I'm so glad you were there and that Abby went in peace |
How very sad, and still a story to bring a smile to any dog lover's heart. It sounds like Abby ended her life with all the love and support possible. |
she obviously loved the dog park so much |
bless her... |
Sorry to hear about Abby. She sounds like a wonderful girl!! |
Even though I'm sure it was hard on you, I'm glad you were there to support your friend in her time of need. |
Ditto, never an easy decision but one we have to make and support them through the goodbyes forever.
Sorry about dear abby and bless her. We are thinking of you all at this sad time. |
Bless her heart! |
I'm so sorry to hear your friends loss of Abby. Trust me, Abby knew exactly what she was doing when she perked up and wanted to be with her loved one. My Shaggy too did the same thing a few days before she passed, somehow got the energy to visit the dog park. It was if all the other dogs there knew as well as they all parted to let her enter when we arrived.
In time I hope your friend remembers the happier times shared with Abby and will come to smile that her old girl was not alone when it was her time to go. Marianne |
Rest in peace Abby, glad she made it to her favorite park with all her friends! |
