Aggression in dogs

Last year when I was having problems with Bear and Clyde fighting, I started doing a lot of reading about aggression in dogs-- different types and how to deal with it. I'm no expert by any means but I hear people drop the word aggression around pretty lightly and I often think that maybe they don't really know what aggression is or means. I'm not even sure I do completely but I think it makes some poor dogs sound like they have much worse of a behavioral problem than they really do, not to mention if someone wants to correct a behavior problem on their own, and they're misidentifying it, it seems like it could only make the problem worse.

I think this article from the Humane Society is a pretty good one in at least identifying aggression and makes some suggestions as to where to start with the problem.

Aggression in Dogs

I think it's a good article to start with if you're wondering if a behavior is aggressive or something else. It goes over dominance aggression; fear-motivated aggression; protective, territorial, and possessive aggression and redirected aggression. It doesn't cover everything by any means but perhaps it'll be helpful if someone comes on and is searching for "aggression."

Excellant article Jill :D

Should be a sticky here on the forum.
Great link.
Thanks for posting this.

I think the article is great for determining which type of aggression a dog is exhibiting but I wish it would have given more suggestions on how to try and modify the behavior.

How are things between Clyde & Bear these days? We still have good days and bad days with Frank & Haggis here.
Clyde and Bear are great. No fights since I saw you last year. Now the most they do is make noise at each other, which is just really annoying. Bear makes ridiculous Wookie groans and yells while Clyde does his super loud bark in the face maneuver. Anyone wondering what the pot casse bark is supposed to sound like, come spend an evening in my home! It's not even fighting, it just reminds me of teenage bickering.

I just liked that article for identification purposes. I agree that they really don't give any real solutions but at least you can identify what you've got and research accordingly from there.
