My 3 year old female kitty (Glacier) has developed stones in her bladder. We noticed her having trouble at the end of July and have been working with our vet to fix the problem since then. At this point the only thing they can hope for is that the stones don't crystallize until they are too big for her to pass and surgery is required. In order to avoid this they believe that science diet CD is the only way to go. I have not heard very good things about Science Diet foods so I was wondering if anyone has any experience in this area and if your vet advised something different. For the time being she is on Science Diet CD as well as receiving pain medication. She's actually kindof loopy at the moment, but she definitely feels better. Thanks so much! |

My cat Tiger ( who lives with my ex-husband ) had problems with urinary crystals forming and blocking the urinary tract when he was about 4 yrs old. He is now 12 yrs old and has been on Purina One Special Care since then and never had a problem since.
http://www.purinaone.com/products_cat_uth.asp The Ex got another cat and had to put that cat on it too so Tiger wouldn't eat food that was bad for him. I highly recommend it as it has worked so well for Tiger. |
I hope Glacier is feeling better. She is very pretty.
My friend Mary is an animal lover, but cats are definitely her favorites. We have talked about the Science Diet foods, both for dogs and cats. According to her, the Science Diet formulas for cats are considered better than the dog formulas. They are more of a top of the line diet in the cat world, whereas for dogs they really aren't. I hope that helps! |
I know nothing about cats but just wanted to tell you that I love a cat on a leash. Does she like to walk with it? |
Corky & Fergus have been on Science Diet I/D for 4 years.
It is the only food that doesn't cause diarrhea. Now, I am worried that I have been giving them bad food. My vet put them on I/D & haven't had any problems & NO more diarrhea! How bad is SD? Thx, sue |
Our senior cat is on Science Diet CD for crystals in the urine. He's been on it for a few years now and no problems whatsoever.
Even though some of the regular brand of foods might get a bad rep, I think there is a lot of thought that goes into prescription brands. We have Frank on a prescription brand of Purina, and the vets assured me that it was a high quality food. |
Thanks everyone for the replies - it sounds like it could be an ok thing!! Glacier is doing pretty well but she is completely loopy from the medicine. She kindof totters around and is much less nervous of Bingley!!
Glacier likes her leash because it means she can go outside, but our other cat Taylor LOVES to go walking on his leash. It's not like walking a dog, we kindof guide Tay in the direction we think he'd enjoy and then he takes off - but he loves it. If they hear their leashes they both come running. . . When they were kittens we would put their leashes on and let them run around in our backyard without us holding on. Glacier would find a patch of sun and pretty much stay there and Taylor would hunt every living (or nonliving) moving thing in sight!! That makes a lot of sense to me. |

We got a harness and leash for our cat, and every time we put it on him he just goes limp and falls over. It's not preventing him from walking or anything, but as soon as it feels the harness on he decides, "I'm going to lay here and do nothing until she takes it off!" Maybe it's because he's a ragdoll cat (they're supposed to go limp sometimes, I think). Sydney is only 2yrs old. We feed him Iams Indoor Weight and Hairball Control, but I'll have to ask the vet if urinary problems are something we might need to think about in the future. |
Our 2 year old (now he's 4!) male cat had the same problem and we put him on the same one Elissa mentioned and we've never had another problem with it reoccuring, so I'd recommend the Purina One |
