Compulsive licking

A few weeks ago, Brian said he had enough of Pandas foot licking....and to try to get her to stop...so every time she comes near us to lick, we gently push her away and say NO.

Heres the interesting thing though. Since she has stopped licking us, she is now compulsively licking her own feet...the tops of her feet are turning pink :? both front and back paws....Is there a way to get her to stop licking all together or should i just let her lick my feet....I dont have a problem with it at all....but brian thinks that guests get grossed out by an overexuberant tongue......

sorry can't be of any help but if your feet are not changing colour I'd go with letting Panda lick your feet
She can lick my feet.... I like pink feet
No help here...we have the exact same problem....in fact, if you go further and tell them not to lick their feet, our dogs just move on to licking the FLOOR! 8O Which...is just too pathetic!

So we just let them lick us
Panda's a girl--she's allowed to have pink feet!

Barney LOVES to lick his paws. Us too, to an extent, but he mostly prefers himself. We've tried the bitter apple and that only stops him for a second.

The only thing that really worked, and it worked instantly, is we took him to the vet who gave him an allergy shot (cortisone, I think) and it was amazing how he just stopped. It's been a few months now and he's gradually licking more and more, so I think we'll have to go and get another shot for him, especially with fall coming.
a tiny bit a tabasco sauce is what i was told for Sami wanting to take off with our shoes. I have not done it yet.
Licking the feet/legs can be a problem. You mentioned they're getting
pink so I'm afraid she'll begin to irritate them even more if it continues.

Lick granuloma comes to mind... (warning: icky pictures!)

If it's not an allergy or yeast, could you get a kong and smear the inside
with something yummy to transfer the licking to something acceptable? Or
put a Nylabone or something similar in her mouth when she begins? I've
got a compulsive licker too and do this when I see she's getting
obnoxious. This behavior can be a challenge. :?

I've been taking the medium size kongs and filling them with Wellness
95% meat canned meat and freezing them solid. The girls have to really
work to get the gunk out of them.

6Girls,

I am sorry, I really should know your name, but I do not. I just want to thank you for your wisdom. You always seem to know the scientific answer, which being a scientist myself, I really appreciate. I enjoy reading you posts, and have the upmost faith in your advice.

Hi Jennie-
I'm Jaci or Jaclin and that was so very nice of you to say. I just try to share ideas that might help a dog. It's information I've learned from others along the way. And with 6 dogs, I have a lot of guinea pigs to test the theories on too!

Yeah... and I use all those big words too like "gunk" and "icky". I have to confess that I drive my son nuts because I make up words for stuff when I don't know (or really feel a need to know) the technical term for computer programs we use for work. I think I'll forward your post to him

By sharing sources of information, we can each decide if the info is valid and reliable. But I don't have all the answers... I'm learning all the time just like everyone else here.

YAY... another scientist!! I too appreciate that a lot of people on here not only give out advice and opinions, but often provide sound sources to back them up. Not that I don't appreciate opinions by themselves, but it's just so much nicer to be able to get to the logic behind the opinion or advice.
Yep I definately agree with Jaci, re-direct her licking to something else other then her paws or you could end up with real problems there.

Give her back your feet or try the Kong solution.

In the meantime, try some pink socks on her to stop her going at her paws while re-directing her lick obesession to something other then herself

If you keep letting her do it, that nice shade of pink turns an ugly brownish orange colour with the saliva. 8O
I have a question...do dogs lick because they need salt? or is it our sent? :?

Lisa's right... pink or even brown. :( The socks are good idea.

Darby developed a histiocytoma, an itchy benign tumor, but
you can see what a mess repeated licking makes of the fur.
In the first picture back feet have the pink hue Lisa talks about.
In the second picture, about 3 months later, the fur has turned
an icky brown.

Icky warning on this picture-

If you can't transfer the behavior to an acceptable one, I vote
for letting her lick human feet again too. You can always invite
company over
