First of all, thank you for trying to stop the jumping in a postive way.
The trick is to completely ignore him...turn your back (yes, he may still jump up on your back), keep your arms close to your body and wait him out. But he needs to know what you want him to do, so as soon as he stops jumping you wait about 2 seconds, then can bend over and pat him, or better yet, give him a treat. Timing is everything. You also need to be careful that he doesn't see it as "jump, then stop and then get a treat"...To get the "jump" part removed from the equation, you also want him to understand that everytime he greets you with his 4 feet on the ground, he is rewarded. So don't wait for the jump part. Reward him when he has 4 feet on the ground. Often, even for no other reason than he is NOT jumping up. So the rules of the game are: 4 feet on the ground is good, and get doggie a treat. Jumping gets you to turn your back and ignore. Hope this helps. |
Thanks.. I just wasn't sure if we were correct in letting him continue jumping on our backside while we were ignoring him. Right now it is kinda funny cause he is sooo cute! I will try to post a picture of him but having trouble figuring it out! |
Thatcher is so cute! It's so hard to be firm when they are this adorable!
