We got our pick of the litter!

Well, long story short, we got a puppy. The breeder said there was a big misunderstanding (on her part), and she apologized. It turns out, the breeder decided that I was interested in a very specific appearance and might give the dog away it grew up not looking the way I wanted. She told me this last night. This could not be farther from the truth! I am such an animal lover. She didn't ask a lot of questions or check into my background or personality or anything before she made that decision. She just assumed based on my questions about their appearance. However, she was wanting me to make a quick decision based on only the newborn pictures she sent me. For some reason, I thought we wouldn't have to decide until they were a few weeks old, so I wasn't in a hurry and was asking lots of questions. Since I didn't decide right away, she thought I didn't really like any of them enough. The problem was, I liked them all!

We had a long talk and she said she made a horrible mistake. Long story short, she was able to do a switch with another woman and could still give me the puppy I wanted. I'm very happy to have our puppy, but I feel so beat down about yesterday's experience that I haven't gotten over the awful shock of it yet. Yesterday was awful.

We are getting our puppy and I still feel that this is reputable breeder (I've talked with 2 people with pups from her). We should have Nanny at the end of October (about 10 weeks old). Even though it actually worked out well, it is still a difficult process to get a puppy!

Congratulations! :D

Is the pup in your avatar the one you are getting? Shes darling!
:yay:

Glad to hear things worked out...sounds like the pup will have a very special mom who will take care of it. The funny thing is I think as much as we take care of our dogs they take care of us just as much. There is nothing I want to see more when I have had a bad day then my wife and my dogs sitting at home excited to see me when I walk through the front door. I am sure you will both have a great time together.
Yes, the avatar is our little Nanny. I wanted to name her that because I think it will be sweet when we have kids (probably 2 years from now)... you know, like Nana in Peter Pan. Jason wants to call her Nana Banana, but I don't know if dogs understand being called 10 different nicknames.

Anyway, isn't she precious?! I can't wait to bring her home. I have literally wanted an OES for my entire life. I couldn't have one when I was younger because the parents said "no." Then I was in college and in dorms/apartments and I didn't feel that that was the right time. I've been married for 2yrs now and we have a house and a yard and it's finally the right time. I can't wait!

Our dogs have at LEAST that many nicknames, and yes, they understand ok! They also have theme songs
Good luck with your Nanny. I am glad you got things all worked out. It just sounds like one big misunderstanding. Love your avatar - such a tiny baby.

Did she offer you all the health certifications that a reputable breeder would? At least hips or eyes?
Yes, all of the health stuff will be taken care of and guaranteed. And the puppies have already had their first trip to the vet. Other people who have purchased from her told me they will definitely go to her again in the future if they want another dog. There is no inbreeding or excessive breeding or anything like that. And she does not breed any other type of dog. I've asked her lots of questions about all of that. She should have asked me more questions too!

I told her we are happy to give any information she needs in regards to the adoption. And I'm doing lots of research to ensure that I can be the best parent possible.
I'm sorry, I worded that badly, I meant on the parents-- have their hips and eyes been certified?
Let's see, she told me:

"About the mother...the bloodline has with me or close to me for almost 30 years..never had any hip problems....and I think that is usually passed from parents. I give a full year guarantee on anything that may have come from parents or something I didnt do. I breed for health first, beauty, and personality."

She also told me that she has known the mother dog's background for years, and did a lot of research on the father before she brought him into the picture. And she said she has never had to replace a puppy. She is very helpful and offers up lots of information. I even know what the mom was fed during pregnancy and the puppies food and their potty training, etc. I feel good about the background of everything.

I can't wait to post pictures when she's a little older!
Oh your Nanny is so adorable......I look forward to watching her grow up. :D
I was going to call our Sami Nanny for the same reason, but my mother in law looked hurt becausee all the kids call her nanny.
I liked Lucy too, and Duchess was an option. For whatever reason, Nanny just stuck.

Now that we got the puppy picked out, I'm trying to do more research (on potty training, health tips, crate training, etc.). This forum is a wealth of information. It's so great! I've read about the biting and teething that happens in the beginning. Hopefully if you get enough chew toys you can minimize the hand biting?? I went through that when my ragdoll cat was a baby. For a while, I had so many scratches up and down my arms it looked like I had hurt myself! Hopefully it won't be as bad as that. I've got to figure out how soon you take the puppy to behavior/manners school.
Puppy school is coming up for us. Nigel is 12 weeks today, and he needs some manners. LOL. I think you can take them to Petsmart as early as 10 weeks. They need a certain amount of shots before they go. Good luck on the new baby.
Congratulations Nanny is a little doll

Next Friday is when she comes home!!! :excited: :yay: :go:  :yay: :excited: :go:
I'm just a little excited about it (lol)...can you tell?!??

We have lots of Nanny shopping to do this weekend!!! She'll be here next Friday night (10/12) and so begins my life as a parent! :D (Every time I say that Jason has to remind me, "We're already parents!....Did you forget about Sydney?" But cats are just so independent. It's not the same) I've got to hurry up and finish reading my book, "Housetraining for Dummies."

I haven't received any new pictures of Nanny lately, but I'll have plenty as soon as she comes home.
Do you have any pics of her parents?
You'll want some with her bio mom and dad before she leaves the breeders!
Stephanie----

YaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaH!!!!!!

When I was shopping for Heart :hearts: right before she arrived, I picked up the "Dummies" book!!! I loved it and refer to it often.....

Get plenty of SLEEP this next week.

Potty breaks EVERY 2 hours...LOLO   :excited: :twitch: :twitch:
What do you think everybody.........should we start a countdown until Stephanie gets Nanny?!?

I think it's TOMORROW :cheer:  :clappurple:

Remember, we'll need to see pictures of the little one.
Puppy pictures!! :cheer: Puppy pictures!! :cheer:
:D :D :D :D :D :D

Only 1 more day!!!!!!!!!! I put a few recent pictures of her recently, but I will definitely take a million more when she gets here.

I'm going out to get her food tonight, and I've been trying to figure all of that out. The breeder uses Royal Canin, but said it wouldn't be a problem if I wanted to switch. I was trying to read up on the forum about what people recommend, but there's no majority consensus. Joahayeo's (spell?) suggestion of Science Diet sounds good to me...if it means firmer and less stools. And of course I want her to have the best nutrition available. Also, the breeder leaves dry food out all the time, but I was thinking I should feed her 2-3 times a day, and take up the food when she's done. Ahhhh!!! So much to learn!
I don't know how you can stand it!! That butt is way too cute. Love the markings!!

Science Diet isn't the best food for our dogs. I wouldn't use it unless it was absolutely necessary (which is me). I've tried everything for dogs with allergies, and this is just what works for now.
I agree. Science Diet's regular formulas are horrible, I'd say they are in the same class as Purina Dog Chow and Ole Roy.
From what I have heard Royal Canin is a very good food. If you do plan on switching to a different food, you will need to do it gradually. So I would go out and at least get a small bag of Royal Canin or your dog will most likely end up with the runs.... and trust me, that is NEVER fun!

Can't wait to see Nanny's homecoming pictures. :excited:
I have to agree that if you switch Nanny's food, do it gradually.
I played around with Finn's food the first year. He now eats California Natural and has done great. For a while he had a rough time with skin allergies, stinky loose stools, and gassiness.
There is no one size fits all answer unfortunately, but I'm sure you've read the posts here, and know how important reading labels can be!
Good luck!
Yes, I read about switching food and giving them 1/2 and 1/2 for a while. I'm not going to switch right away, and now I think I might not switch for a while. I was just wanting to know whether to go out and buy 6months worth of this type of food or not.

I'll keep her on Royal Canin for now. :)

And yes, her tush is adorable! I love their big bear butts. They really do look like bears. My hubby said, "She's got a big butt just like her momma." :o I said "Excuse me?!?!"....but he said he was talking about the picture of the momma dog. :P (yeah, sure!)
one more nite then no rest for you lol

 Nanny got BACK!
Congratulations, I'd say she was worth the wait.
