Hurricane Prep for Dogs

Well, its hurricane season here and the media won't let us forget it. Every minute on the news is a reminder to be hurrican prepared...

My question is, does anyone have a hurricane prepare "kit" for their dog? Like extra food, etc in case of evacuation? I am now getting one ready and wondering what else to add to it...I have an extra sealed bag of food, bottled water, any meds, hmmm...what else???

Good question!!!

Here's some more things off the top of my head.

Doggy doo bags.
Booties to protect from debris
Maybe an extra leash and slip collar
Maybe a collar tag with identification and a contact for someone out of the hurricane area
Microchipping (also with dual contact info)
A picture of your dog for re-identification purposes.
Copy of immunization records. (In case you have to board or need to have them treated for something)

A toy or blanket for comfort.

Bowl or container for food & water.
i've been threatening to sell this place and move to my dream house on Ambergris Caye in Belize. It's for sale........and i have coveted this place for 6 years now.

Then i think that this is an island i'm talking about........ so i would have to sell my volvo anyways as only transport on island you own golfcarts! lol. I would have to buy a cabin cruiser boat so i could put crates in the hold for all dogs and peepers kitty so i could leave the island at first hint of hurricane to get out of the way............ down the coasts..........

something tells me living on the island with 7 oes and a cat might not be practical............ lol. but i sure do love this home there!!

I recently joined the animal rescue team in our community(SMART TEAM). They supplement the local SPCA with a 24/7 call line for animal rescue (our local SPCA is only open 9-5). SMART published a newsletter with all kinds of info on disaster preparedness, I'll dig it out when I get home from vacation.

But there are two things I remember,
In a disaster a microchip can be invaluable. I have never been a big believer in micro chips because I always use a collar and tag but it was pointed out that in a disaster a collar can get lost.

The other thing I had never thought about was a picture of YOU WITH your dog to prove ownership!!
Wow, what great tips! I'm glad I asked...I never thought of the microchip for disaster...or a picture of me and my dog or even a copy of the immunizations. Thanks everyone. the dog will be more prepared than me! All I know is he will be with me wherever I go. No way would he ever be left behind!

I also thought a small first aid kit with some bandages, stop bleed, etc.

Anything else, please post...thanks. And then let's hope we never need it!

Good topic - and great ideas! :D We all hope we'll never need them, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
