Bloody Nose

Right before we went to MT Bingley had a bloody nose from one of his nostrils. We went to the vet for his health certificate and as he was healthy otherwise we assumed that it was due to rough play at home! All through the 3 weeks in MT he was great and never had a hint of a bloody nose. Now that we're back he's begun having them again. Always from one nostril, usually when he's barking or being active, maybe a sneeze now and then. We have an appt scheduled, but it is a while away as he is eating well, his temp is great, he's playing and acting normal. I'm wondering if it could be some sort of fungal thing - especially with the humidity difference from FL and MT?! If anyone has any experience with this please let me know!

Another cause of bloody nose is a form of Nasal Cancer, which is discussed in the following articles:

Sorry emily no help there, have not experienced a bloody nose before.

Just want to wish you and Bingley all the best when you see the vet, hopefully he can have a good look up there and find out what is going on.

Keep us posted as to what the vet thinks is causing it.

Hugs. :D
Strange indeed. Since he had no symptoms in MT I'd be looking for something around the house, yard or walk outside. For example nettles have small hairs that can get up a nose and cause it to bleed. Any severe irritation could cause this. I'd be looking along this line.

Less likely are:

Then there's the bump on the nose. Problem is if the bump is great enough it may lead to Aspergillosis, a fungal disease. It would have shown first as nasal discharge for awhile then gradually leading to bloody noses. The fungus is in dogs with compromised immune systems....that's not Bingley. Nasal tumor is similar and also usually preceeded by mucus nose.

After that it gets even more bizarre: Canine von Willebrand, Heartworm or Erlichiosis. Chances are so remote they are more liks an asterik.

He must be picking up something when sniffing around. Something in Florida bothers his nose.
I have no experience in this but will take a wild guess...since you are in florida and I beleive you said you travelled to Montana? and there was no poblem there. Maybe an allergy to mold spores? I know in climates with alot of humidity, the mold spores re high and in somewehre like Montana, relatively dry, there isn't...I am allerergic to mold spores and live on Long Island in New York and get lots of nose bleeds during this time of year!

Sometimes I find our furry four leged freinds are not much different than us humans!
Nothing to offer other than a :ghug: and good wishes.
:q(

(that was a sad face with a bloody nose....)

:ghug:
I'm also hoping it's allergies.
Allergies cause the nasal mucosa to swell, which stretches the veins in that area. They are more prone to breaking open and bleeding. And yes, it can happen in just one nostril.
We see it in human kids a lot.
Oh my, be careful. Have you check his gums? IF you press on his gums does it stay indented or go back to normal? Does the color change then return to normal? If you do the "press test" and either of those things happen, try to get him to the vet asap.
At Old English Sheepdog Recue of Florida, they got an 11 month old little boy. He was doing very well. Suddenly he got a bloody nose. They brought him to to the vet and he wad diagnosed with eherlichia. It's an illness because the dog may have eaten a flea. (I'm not saying that Bing has fleas, they are just out there...no matter if we like it or not). They put the pup on some meds. They work very well except he did get another very severe bloody nose (it put the rescue in the hole about $5000 because blood was needed). The rescue said they they have another dog with the the same condition. He is on meds and never has a problem. They told me that it is very easily controllable.
I'm not writing this to scare you. Please don't take this post wrongly. I just don't want anything to happen to Bing...I know he's your baby!!
Remember, I'm not a vet. I only know this because I still keep in touch with the adoption agency. I'm sure it could be a million things. Hopefully it is something as simple as a little bit fo rough play or allergies.
I'll (and Rheba too) be thinking about Bing and wishing for the best!!
Thanks everyone for the well wishes (and the bloody nose sad face). It's not fun when he gets these but they are just a trickle of blood and they stop immediately f I put a wet cloth to his nose. I'm hoping it's some kind of allergy as well. It just seems weird that it would completely stop with the change in location. I will for sure let everyone know what the vet says - the appt isn't for a while as I am opting to go to a new vet that has less expensive x-rays machines, etc, thinking they may want to check that way as well. (cross those paws)
Emily, the reason that I think of allergies is that it completely stopped in a different location - different allergens or at least, different amounts of them in the new location.
I've got two that were diagnosed with environmental allergies- both with
sensitivity to molds and dust/mites. Based on what I've read and
experienced, I've never heard of allergies causing nose bleeds.
Maybe we've been lucky? I heard that hard sneezes can bring them
on though.

Good for you. It needs to be checked out to determine if it's something
minor or serious.

Best wishes for something minor and easy to fix.
Hey Emily and Bingley - Callie and I send our well-wishes. I'm sure sheepy bloody noses are not fun for either of you.

Here's another thought for you. Since you are in Florida, I'm sure you have the A/C running all the time. Is your house dry inside? Usually, people think of it being more dry in the winter, but I know sometimes when it's really hot and we have the A/C running a whole lot in the summer, it gets pretty dry inside the house. Those are the only times I've ever had a nose bleed - when the air gets really dry and dries out the inside of my nose...

..probably not it, but just another idea...

Good luck with the new vet!
I hope it's something simple like allergies.
Whatever it is.. seems to be environmental.
I hope Bingley is doing well! :ghug:
Poor Bingley. :( I'm sorry he's having this problem. I have no experience with it, but do want to wish you the best in finding out the cause & treating it. :ghug: Hugs to you & Bingley.
I realize this is probably a late post for this .....but I had to put my ten year old "Clancy" down two nights ago because of a nasal tumor. It begins with sneezing and asthmatic like breathing. The slow drip bleeding soon follows. We knew our options were surgery or chemo. Clancy's tumor was biopsied and it came back benign. An antibiotic and an antihistamine seemed to manage his condition for a month. My husband came home at lunch time and found his condition to worsen. Later when I arrived home from work, the bleeding had become worse, he couldn't keep up with the dripping (from his left nostril) and he couldn't keep up with keeping his paws clean. It is a devastating situation to watch your "child" go through. We tried to keep him calm, but the situation became worse. He began throwing clots and sneezing uncontrollably. We took him to an area "emergency" animal clinic and no longer could let him suffer. We were all devastated and our hearts were wrenched from us that night. Please, as soon as you see these conditions, seek medical attention for your loved one. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do....
