She was jumping on the ottoman (1.5 ft off the ground) yesterday and yelped. It was so quiet we weren't sure if it was her or Copper. Jumping on the ottoman is normal behavior for her. After watching her she yelped a second time and then yelped coming up the stairs. Her back left leg appears to be a little stiff and she has a wart like thing on her toe pad she seems to be ticklish and pulls away when examined there. So this afternoon she started to jump on the ottoman and yelped the loudest so far and didn't complete getting up there. Behavior is completely happy & normal aside from that. She's even playing a little with Copper. She has never had hip or leg problems. She's going to the vets in the morning. I'm trying not to overworry or over react. Hopefully it's a sprain or something. She is enjoying the leg massages I am giving her. What a milker. |

Hope nothing too bad for hannah, hopefully just a sprain. Might be a pull to to a tendon which is easly done. So best to have her checked, she might need an anti-inflammetry there for the pain and to settle it down for her.
Quiet days for a few days and no jumping up or down hannah till you are feeling better. |
I'm sure it's nothing serious. I hope she feels better soon. Keep us updated! |
Aw- poor thing. Hope she gets to feeling better soon! |
Aw, poor Hannah! It's so hard to watch our babies in pain, isn't it? Hopefully it's nothing more serious than a sprain. |
Ahhh poor Hannah.....I hope it is only minor and she heals quickly.
Aussie and Sheepie hugs to her Get well soon sweet sheepie girl. |
Poor Hannah, I hope she is better fast!!!!!!!!!!!! |
I'd do the same thing - straight away to the vet's office - since it's such unusual behavior for her. I hope all is well, though. Keep us posted. In the meantime, belly rubs to Hannah from me. |
Id get her to the vet M, she could have pulled her acl....fingers crossed and best wishes for the pumpkin girl! |
I hope Hannah is okay and it's just a sprain. |
Not so good news for Hannah. She has been diagnosed at the age of 7 with hip displasia and some other things.
I am so sad. I will have to post details later. Hannah is one resilient sheepie. I love her so much! |
LVSL, I'm so sad for you and Hannah. Such a tough thing. I hope you can find ways to lessen her pain. |
I'm sorry about Hip Dysplasia. Hopefully she can manage with pain meds.
Big hugs to both of you! |

What sad news. I'm sure this is hard on you guys. Take comfort in knowing that many here have been through the same things and will be able to offer advice and support.
Hugs to you and Hannah. |
I'm very sorry to hear of Hannahs HD |
Me too I was hoping it was just a sprain or pull to the tendon.
Hugs sweetie, No more jumping up or down on things, you have to keep good care of the hips now, so not such a quick degeneration there happening, get mom or dad to lift you onto the couch etc and help you down too. |
Oh Dear. That is not what we wanted to hear at all.
I am hopeful that her condition is mild and can be treated easily to make her comfortable and able to get around as well as she always has. |
Stella and Sampson send their best wishes... We all hope she can do well on medications. |
Oh no! That's not the best news. I hope the meds help. The fact that she's so resilient will help, too.

Oh no. That's crazy. She's never shown any symptoms before this? I'm so sorry. I hope that meds will help manage the pain. Did the vet suggest surgery or anything like that? |
Oh crap.
Poor Hannah. |
Oh no! Poor Hannah! I think we were all hoping for something temporary that rest would cure. . .
What did the Vet suggest in terms of treatment? |
Poor Hannah! I'm so sorry to hear this...hopefully your vet can suggest something to help |

That's what I was thinking too Jill, very strange. Did the vet x-ray Hannahs hips to confirm it is a HD problem? Or could it just be with pain there a little bit of arthritis starting to happen? |
Poor Hanna |
I am still so sad! To say this was a shock would be an understatement. In addition, Hannah's Daddy is currently flat on his back right now but that's another story.
As I have a tendancy to make too long posts I will have to start another thread with details because it was pretty involved. Yes it was diagnosed by two x-rays. The shocking thing is since she has been a puppy we have had her hips checked on several occassions because we had a previous dog with hip dysplasia. But, this is the first time we actually had an x-ray. First time there was any cause really. So the more I learn the more I know I don't know anything! So I guess the only way to diagnose hip dysplasia is with an x-ray? |
Yesterday has to rank up there as one of those terrible days you will never forget.
I guess what hit me so hard is Hannah is a bigger more strongly built sheepie than our Katrina was. We've always told her she's on the 15 year plan! And we thought we would have so much more time with her because she was so sturdy. Katrina had lived a mostly successful life without suffering real bad effects of hip dysplasia until the end. Because Katrina was smaller I was able to have more time with her when her sciatica unexpectedly blew out because of the dysplasia. Because I could lift her 63-68 lbs she came home and we had more time with her while we dealt with that condition. Hannah is now a svelte 93 lbs. I guess I need to get my muscles in shape More specifics on the prognosis to come. Thanks for letting me vent it really helps. I just love her so much! She is so special! |
Be interested to see what you post about Hannah.
X-ray is the only way to see what is happening there as far as the ball and socket are and how the ball is sitting in the socket. And how much if any gap there is inbetween the ball and socket. They then go off to be read where experts reads the x-ray and checks the sub-laxation and angles of the hip joints also, then they grade them accordingly. That being said there is always a natural degeneration there as they get older. The reasons why x-raying of the hips happens around 2 years old. After the growth spurt is over and before age degeneration starts happening. Keep your spirits high for Hannah we are thinking of you both. |
Please keep us posted and give her big squish from Clyde. |
Hi,
I am so sorry to hear about Hannah and was also hoping it was a sprain. Panda also has hip dysplasia in both hips (moderate) and as long as he doesn't overdo it he copes fine. I have spoken numerous times with my vet even at one point asking if he could have surgery now while he was still reasonably young and could recoup. She said nowadays surgery is not necessarily done as some dogs cope better than others even with x-rays showing severe dysplasia. Please keep us updated and sending hugs to you and kisses from the boys to Hannah. Marianne |
