Any time from 4 months (rare but does occur) to about 12 month with 7-9 being average. One sign is they spend more time with their nose between their back legs. Look for swelling. The bloody or brownish discharge is just the first part of the estrus. The discharge will turn white or clear......that's when she's ready to be bred......so be very careful. the whole cycle
When to spay? Most vets do not like to spay before 5-6 months. the more mature dog is better ble to withstand the anesthesia. Spaying this early may catch most females before they come into their first heat. In fact, by eliminating the estrogen before it is ever released during the first heat may greatly diminish the chance of breast cancer later on. Spaying does not slow or change a bitches' physical or mental development or alter her personality......other than the crazies during estrus. Dogs getting fat after spay is a MYTH! Most vets won't spay during estrus due to the extra blood in the organ region and the slower clotting due to hormones in the area. Since your sheepie is already 6 months, think about having the procedure done soon, very soon. BTW, did you know "spay" comes from "ovariohysterectomy?" I just want to know where the "p" comes from in "spay" |
