MN emergency

Well,

We just had a major incident here in MN. Sometime during the 6 o'clock pm(CST) hour one of our major bridges over the mississippi river just collapsed. It is located on 35W, in Minneapolis. There are at least 30 vehicles in the river, we're not sure how many more are caught underneath the bridge. The bridge was undergoing some resurfacing construction, but no one's sure at this point if the collapse was due to the construction, or something else... The FBI have been called in. 8O

All my family and friends are ok, but there are a lot of people out there that were on that bridge.

All my MN forum friends check in, everyone all ok?

Please keep those people, and the brave men and women trying to rescue them in your thoughts and prayers. We've got night and rain closing in, which will make rescue attempts harder. It's very very scary!

that is so scary - im keeping my fingers crossed for all that are involved!
We've been watching it here snce it happened. Although we are in NY, we have lots of friends in the Minneapolis area using that bridge during rush hour. They are text messaging us they are okay...can't get thru on the phones. We are still awaiting word on one more friend...

Our prayers are with you all. Hope everyone is safe...Life is soooo scary...
How awful :( . Well I'm certainly glad your family and friends are safe it's heartbreaking to think about those who aren't.
That sounds dreadful. I will hope for many survivors.
I hadn't had the news on tonight and my daughter's friend called and told her. Just got on line to check here to see if all of my MN OES friends were ok.

We're in the SE corner of the state and no one traveled up to the cities today. Thank heavens.

Hoping everyone is ok.
Just checking this out on CNN. I love Minneapolis (have cousins there). Hope everyone is okay!
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the Twin Cities tonight.

How terrible! :(
Just seen it on the news, Thoughts and prayers to all involved in the bridge collapse, and especially to all the rescue/emergency people.

The scenes here on the news was just so sad and awful. :(
I saw the images on the news, and I can't even imagine it. It seems so surreal. I truly hope they wont find any more fatalities, and I pray for the familes of all who were involved.
My friend Mary and her husband were 5 blocks from the bridge, Jim had surgery up there today. They crossed that bridge this morning on the way to the hospital. Mary said she saw the smoke, dust and debris in the air. The hospitals all are on high alert. They have 6 confirmed dead now.

Good thing Jim is miserable with puking after surgery, and they are staying overnight. 8O Otherwise they may have been heading back to Mankato at the time of the accident.
We've been trying to contact Nancy with the Minnesota OES Rescue with no luck. She lives less than 10 minutes from the bridge that collapsed.

Please think positive thoughts for Nancy and her family and for all those those touched by this tragedy.

Just got word that Nancy and her family are okay. :D
Unless it is an emergency, state and local officials are urging people to stay off their cell phones. As we can all imagine, thousands of people are calling trying to check on the status of family and friends who may be affected in the collapse. Getting through on lines is reported to be very difficult right now due to extremely increased useage.

As I was typing this, I just noticed that Nancy and family have been accounted for. Still sending out lots of prayers for everyone.
Prayers and good thoughts to all involved
The news is on again, only a 40 year old bridge and 50 cars still under water. A school bus with 60 kids on board just missed going over. The stories of the survivors is amazing, so sad as to see, wonder what the final death toll is going to be, still so many missing.

Just so tragic and Nita so glad to hear all is OK there.

Bless all those involved and all those that lost their lives, I wonder what caused the collapse.
This is so scary. I can't believe they had video of it happening. I was born in Minneapolis so it holds a special place in my heart. Thinking of everyone affected...
Its terrible what happened. I feel so badly for everyone who has been touched by this tragedy.

I'm glad to hear Nancy is alright. I emailed her this morning, but hadn't heard back...

Prayers to all...
This morning on our local news, they let us know that many of our bridges in Michigan are in similar condition to what this bridge was before it collapsed-- but we don't have any money to fix them. 8O

Nice confidence builder for the Great Lakes state, where we have water, so, in turn, bridges, everywhere.
Well,

It's been a pretty hectic night for everyone. The news this morning reported that the death count (officially) was reduced to 4- that's the number of people they currently have, but expect the number to go up as they start recovery operations this morning.

The school bus full of children actually was on the bridge when it collapsed- you can still see the bus in the rubble. It was an absolute miracle that those children are all ok. Thank heaven for that!!!

Official word is still that they don't beleive any act of terrorism was involved- which is good, but it is still so scary that the bridge was allowed to get into that condtion in the first place that it collapsed! And that no one thought to SHUT IT DOWN first!

It really brings home to me how much we put our safety into the hands of the folks that inspect and repair these bridges. I probably drive over and under at least 15 bridges and overpasses on my way into work in the morning. It really puts into prospective how much we take them for granted.

Glad to hear all the rest of my fellow Minnesotans are ok, hoping your family, friends, and co-workers are too. :ghug:
I was watching this a little bit last night... I don't have cable so the viewing options are limited.

I was waiting for someone to start showing video of the collapse -- it is such a major throughfare that I figured that at least one TV station must have a video camera trained on it for traffic reports. Has anyone seen motion video of it?

Karen, all the reports I was hearing last night were saying that the bridge was in good shape. A university study said it saw some "hallmarks of fatigue but no issues" or something like that. Have you heard otherwise?

Jill, you DO have the money to fix them. The public just has to have the WILL to do it.
CNN somehow managed to get a hold of a video surveillance camera that showed the collapse. It just went down and then poof a big puff of smoke like debris (probably cement dust), followed by the last span going down. My girlfriend's husband actually saw the bridge go down- they live in a highrise condo about a block or two down from there. I haven't spoken with him to hear exactly what he saw.

From all reports the bridge passed inspection in 2005 and 2006. There was construction, but it was only resurfacing work- nothing that should have compromised the structural integrity of the bridge. Which is what makes it so frustrating. Either the inspectors really were not doing their jobs, somehow the construction did end up affecting the structure of the bridge itself, or there is something else going on that we don't know about.
My heart goes out to all those people involved. What a horrible tragedy and heartbreaking for so many families.

I'm thankful people from our OES family are safe! Sad for other families that had to hear not so good news.

It's amazing that a bridge used by so many commuters could collapse and how absolutely terrifying it must have been for so many. I can't imagine the disbelief everyone must have felt! The light was that that entire school bus didn't go over! So many parents must have hugged their children extra tight that night.

My thoughts are with Minnasotans.

Marianne
My heart sank and my stomach did flip flops when I saw the breaking footage yesterday. Just horrible...I can't even imagine
