He started freaking out, as this is near the kids playground. Most of you know Ryan is allergic to bees and got stung just last week. I remembered what my Aunt had told me years ago. She worked for an exterminator. She had told me to go to the nest at dusk or dawn as they are all in there at that time and douse with Formula 409 (yes the spray cleaner.) It suffocated them. Hubby was scared to do it. Being that I have done it before, I offered to be the mass murderer tonight. A few climbed out as I first started spraying, but they were confused and out of it. They died within minutes. I must have sprayed half the bottle in the hole, just to be on the safe side. When I realized the buzzing noises got really slow I knew they were dying. Also no other bees attempted to make it out. So the bees are hopefully all dead now and all for the price of $1.84 vs the hundreds of dollars I would have spent on an exterminator. |

We had the same problem last year elissa a bees nest in the wall cavity, I was in the bathroom and every so often a bee was in there, thought heck where the hell are they coming from.
Hubby got up on the roof as we found where they were getting in and sprayed as well as using the insecticidle powder. It made them angry and they started to come in through the down lights upstairs then as well as the bedrooms & the exhaust fan in the bathrooms, it made the problem worse AGRO bees. Locked the girls in the downstairs laundry, armed with spray for inside to deal with very angry bees, then called an exterminator with the right equipment to get right down in the wall cavity where the hive was and get rid of them for good.. First time ever with a bee problem and I did not want to get stung nor the dogs with the bees either. So if ryan is allergic, just be careful, it can cause a worse problem after spraying or puffing the powder into the hole, sometimes a professional is the best way to go, to get rid of the bees and there hive permantly. It is amazing how deep a hive can be and sometimes you are only eradicating the surface of the multitude of bees in there. So keep a close eye there over the next few days and keep Ryan well away from that area you have treated just incase the hive is not all gone. Hate him to be stung again. |
Formula 409 will work just fine. For our members unfamiliar with the brand, Formula 409 is a mild soapy spray detergent-in-a-bottle, usually used around the kitchen, and counters, tables. Non-toxic to humans.
The soap suffocates the bees, and surprisingly it knocks them down instantly from the air. |
Good info to know. Hope it's resolved. |
You're braver than me, Elissa! Although I'm probably better with bees than a lot of other insects...
So, do you think there's a giant honeycomb in your wall? |
When with Extension we suggest all fire departments carry concentrated detergent that they could mix and spray for Africanized bee murder. Highly recommended was 1 cup Dawn liquid to 1 gallon water.
You are right, it drops them immediately by plugging their air ports on their bodies. However.......you will have a hive and honey. Unless you want carpenter bees, other destructive critters back or mold inside your walls, you need to get that hive out of there, scraping and cleaning, etc. |

I was thinking about that. They are honey bees. So I guess I will have to call in an expert. Why couldn't it have been an accessible area?!? Steph, it's really not scary at all if you do it at dusk or dawn because they are usually sleeping. Only 4 or 5 came out and they just crawled out and died... No flying around. Unforunately I saw bees going in and out this morning.... so I guess I didn't kill them all after all. |
ohhh!
Now I'm sad. Honey bees are the only stinging insects I actually like (ok, them and bumble bees). Why did they have to pick your house to live in, and not a nice hollow tree? The honey bee population here has been having a hard time. The researchers aren't sure why, but their numbers have been steadily dropping.n (there are some noises about it being due to cellphone waves interferign with their navigation abilities, but I'm not sue that's the real reason...) too bad there isn't a bee relocation person out there. What can I say I have a soft spot for honey producers! |
Carbaryl, also called Sevin, liquid would do a number on them. Then you will need to get someone experienced in bee hive removal.....and expect a bit of repair on the house...mainly from the stucco removal and repair. If carpenter bees, carpenter ants, etc get in there, then you have wood repair as well.
I'd avoid anyone who say, "Naw, you don't need to do anything now that the bees are gone." This is a good chance to bee proof the house as well with mesh at all openings. |
there are bee relocators, they are called beekeepers, but getting a hive out is tough work and still involves removing chunks of the house to find the queen and her family as well as secure enough honey comb to carry the family on for awhile.
Yes, bees are disappearing here and Europe at an alarming rate. And since they are responsible for most of the food we eat (except cereals) it poses a real threat to global famine if they disappear. China says they have healthy bees.......maybe they will be the world's savior?? DH talked to our friend a beekeeper and brought up the cell phone/tower issue and his response was, "could be........" Bees have a lot of health issues, mites for example that weakens them and then insane orchardists who don't give a damn about bees' health, just their crop.......pesticides, starving bees, etc. Not an easy business. |
I have an exterminator coming later... they claim "Pesticide free, live bee removal"
The location is tricky.... it's a tiny hole between old stucco and older stucco where the older owner added a pop out window to the master bath. Though they may be able to access it from inside. MAYBE! They are coming to give me a free estimate. WISH ME LUCK!!! |
Cool! Good luck! |
Good luck Elissa. What a mess! |
Good luck to E and her bees!!!! |
I guess they vacuum the bees out and extract the hive.
Still waiting for them to come, but was checking out their website. So they will not bee killed, just dizzy. |
YIKES!!! They want $400 just to remove the bees. Another almost $400 to fix and repair the stucco.
We are having another person come tomorrow for another estimate. |
Yes get another quote it does not hurt to see after that first one
Hope the bees buzz off real soon. Ours was $150 AUD to massacre the bees, boy your exterminators charge a fortune. BUZZ OFF BEES NOW |
Yeah, having anybody do work for you is expensive! Extraction seems high but the stucco repair....that might be right on. Of course they are covering themselves in case those bees are lodged deeper than expected.......still it is awfully expensive. |
okay... I know you will all "bee" happy that we opted for the live removal.
Unforunately it won't get done until sometime next week. So we have to live with the buzzers a while longer. We are having it all done, bee removal, nest extraction, de-pheromone stucco patch and repair. |
Wishing you the best of luck |
Good Luck
BEE gone BUZZ off pests. |
Can't wait for the next exciting episode - will bee watching carefully for the results. |
LOL George
In the meanwhile, the kids are driving me crazy. They desperately want to just go outside and play on their swingset, which is right near the bees. So they are stuck inside. Luckily Ryan is back in school, so he is kept busy most of the day. The good news is they may be able to come and get the Bees at the end of this week, though the stucco work won't be happening until sometime next week. I just want them gone and fast, so the kids and dogs can resume their normal activities in the side yard. |
The Bees are out!!
