Kathi:
You'll probably get as many different answers as there are members of the forum. Also, the "best" (that should be favourite, I think) food in one geographical area may not be available in another area. Also, each breeder or vet will have had experience with certain foods and will recommend whichever one they've seen produce the best results. We fed Barkley the Purina Veterinary Diets (PVD) (Pediatric) until he was about 3 months old, then the PVD (Large Breed Puppy) until he was a year old, and now the PVD (JM), on the advice of our breeder and vet (the vet went to the Purina farms a few years ago, was impressed, and brought in the whole line of Purina Vet products - they also carry Science Diet). These products are a bit more expensive (probably 20-50%) than the pet store and grocery store brands, but are supposed to delay the onset and lessen the effects of arthritis. I haven't done any specific research into the Hill's diets, but given that it is a large breed puppy-specific diet, you're probably on the right track. More importantly, if your dog enjoys the food, is growing well and isn't having any intestinal or other problems, there's no real reason to switch. |
This is one area where I get side tracked. Our oes we lost was on james wellbeloved, but sometimes we had her on a cheaper brand she didnt seem concerned, she just ate anything! I always tried to give her good brands but sometimes money ran out. My yorkie was on canin but suddenly my local supplier stopped stocking it not enough call for it. I then put her on nutro, which she is eating, now the supplier said to me this week I have got canin in again.
The new puppy we collect soon is on james wellbeloved so I think it will be back to that. But the breeder has her on lactol milk as well but no other vitamins or anything....sorry not much help... |
