When do you normally get a girl dog spayed? I had my boy cats done when they were little-- I just don't know anything about dogs. I would love to be a responsible breeder someday, but S'more is only our first puppy and I know that we are not ready for that. I think I will save that for when my kids start going to college and I need something else to fill in my days. Holly |

I've got 6 girls (that's why I've got that real clever screen name ) and all are spayed. We've always had them spayed by around 6 months of age. There are some different views on the best age to spay but we haven't had any incontinence issues.
I've read that if you spay before the first heat cycle you just about eliminate the risk of mammary cancer. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm ... icleid=460 |
Have her spayed anytime from 6 months onwards, under that and there is a higher risk of Urinary spay incontinence as a youngster.
Hard to say when there first heat is, mine have been about the 9 month mark onwards when my girls had there first heat. One was just on 12 months. But there all different, so I think you will be safe there at around 6 -7 months to have her spayed. |
Yikes... I need to clarify.
I should NOT have said "BY" 6 months... I should have said "AT" 6 months. So sorry! |
Thanks-
I guess that means we need to get that set up soon! S'more will be 7 months on 7/30... Heck- what's one more trip to the vet~ Thanks for the info! Holly |
I got my girl done at 9 months and she was not in heat yet. The longer you wait the more it costs? It was an extra $60.00 for me. Not sure maybe because of their size. |
If you are talking about spaying a puppy, I don't think size (as long as she's not too young) is a very big cost issue. Anesthesia is administered by weight, so that might be a factor.
Please talk with your vet. One thing to consider is that most vets will not do a spay when a dog is in heat or near heat because of the increase risk to the dog. I have only one female, spayed at 6 months. She does have some urinary incontinence problems, controlled by inexpensive medication. But she had the problem prior to spaying, so this was not a surprise and something I felt better about dealing with than the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy in a too young dog. |
