Well now all we have to do is find the puppy. We've been looking at this one in particular and I feel like I have a crush on some guy and waiting for him to call because I keep waiting for her to call us and tell us he's not already taken. This is torture! Well, thought I'd vent a little and let you all know, and brag some....heeheehee. Keep your fingers and paws crossed for me! -alex p.s. I actually have a question too...I've heard that it's not good for a puppy to go up more then three stairs at a time until they are six months old. Any truth to this? We thought it may have something to do with hip dysplesia but weren't sure. Thanks again! |

Okay last Wednesday we got him! His name is Nelson and he is adorable! Although we have had quite a few "accidents" in the past few days he's been doing great! He's energetic and just loves playing fetch with his "Froggy"! Even putting him in his kennel at night hasn't been too bad! Last night we had so much fun, after some tumbling around outside we watched Lord of the Rings together, with him in asleep in my arms!
Hopefully I'll figure out this picture thing soon and so you all can see Nelson!!!!!!!!! -alex |
Quick! Quick! Figure it out!! I wanna see baby pictures! Pretty please! (Feel free to post to me here if you have any questions -- maybe I can help out?)
Sorry, I haven't heard anything about stairs -- we kept Tucker away because he really couldn't manage them and we were worried that he would fall down them. Sorry, I'm a bit unclear: did you actually find an *OES* puppy??? Suzanne |
Yeah, he's an OES and he's so sweet! He and out cat are getting along pretty well, surprisingly. Yeah, we've let him go up one stari at a time (we ave a step going up to our kitchen and then outside). He's been doing great with them! Last night he had gotten so excited he leaped across one step and ended up sprawled on the kitchen floor!
Well we now have tons of time to spend with him since it's Christmas break, so I'll try and get some pictures ASAP! Thanks! alex |
We have one step to go down from the kitchen to the family room. It took Tucker a little time to realize that it was there! After awhile though he was leaping/flying from the kitchen to the family room, very elegantly! It was quite the sight to see! Run, run, run, whoosh!, land, run, run...
Oh, what fun you'll be having!!! What a lot of work too, though!!! I'm so happy for you! Suzanne |
That's exactly what we have too (a step leading up to our kitchen from the family room, and then another leading from the family room into the hallway and laundry room where Nelson's "bed" is)! He is sailing across both steps! We all laugh because sometimes he gets to be so hyper he just runs back and forth leaping from one room to the next!
Let's see we have had him for a total of just over 100 hours! He does the sweetest thing, he likes to go up to his food bowl then take one or two pieces of kibble and take them to random places around our kitchen, then he'll eat them, it's absolutly darling but there is kibble hidden everywhere! He is getting to be so good, he plops down right by the door after his walk so we can wipe his paws off and, with a little bribe of kibble knows "sit" and "down". Tomorrow is our first vet visit since he's been with us! We're hoping everything will check out good and healthy, though we have a sneaking suspiscion he may have fleas... Oh yeah, yesterday we drove to the library and picked up the movies "Please Don't Pick the Daisies" and "The Shaggy Dog". Nelson cuddled right down to watch both. Well I better go, I've got a dog barking and I think he needs a little love! -alex |
He sounds absolutely adorable! Between you and another poster (Gabriel's mom, is it?), I've been having dreams about OES puppies! I think I need to see pictures *real* soon! I just realized that Tucker is now 11 months old (yesterday) -- one more month till his first birthday! It seems like we've only had him a few months!
There are many of us here that love sheepdog stories, so *please* feel free to post whenever you have a story! (No one will think you're obsessed -- probably because we're all obsessed! ) |
Oh most excellent! I'll be sure to put up all his stories. We're just a few minutes away from his first vet visit! Well we had a very lazy day yesterday, we sat around, watched movies, didn't really do much so last night Nelson was pretty wild. I finally ended up watchig a movie with him and getting him to go to sleep in my arms in the family room and then took him into his kennel. He was barking for quite awhile after that but I left him alone and he went to sleep...finally.
Time to go to the V-E-T! alex |
Alex -
That is wondeful news about Nelson! Congratulations! And we do hope to see pictures soon. And looking forward to more stories. Was just wondering if he is the rescue dog you spoke about in earlier posts? All the best! Cheers! Guinevere's Dad, Kevin Z. |
No, although I was considering a rescue dog I thought it might be better if, for our first dog that we get a puppy. Honestly I love Nelson so much I would love to think and dream about a rescue dog in the future.
We got Nelson when he was just about 4 1/2 months old (as of December 24) and already he's up to 25 lbs and seems to be growing every time I see him! |
Congratulations on getting your new puppy! What an exciting time for you and your family. I have a 20 month old OES named Bailey. We have done the puppy classes (which I highly recommend) and now we have moved into the agility and obedience programs. She seems to love whatever I can throw at her. We tried herding and she actually seemed pretty attentive but I couldn't deal with the cain poles to keep her away from the sheep???
As far as the step issue...I have not heard that dogs should not go up stairs. I live in a bi-level home and if Bailey did not go up steps then she would not be coming into the house...On some level Nelson does need to learn to go up stairs. He does not need to take them three at a time but one at a time should be fine. In agility, any puppy should not be jumping hurdles until they are at least 9 months old. That should be the age of the dogs full height. Part of that is a ligament issue not really a hip displacure issue. Like some kids when they are growing so fast they can't keep up with their bodies...dogs go through the same awkward getting used to their size issues. Hope this helps. Meanwhile, enjoy the puppyhood. Take tons of pictures. In a blink he will be a big clown not just a little clown! Best wishes! Wendy and Bailey |
