Proublem is my kitchen is half waynes coating wood. Much to country for me. Now do I try and remove it, might need to replace the drywall. but it will make the room look larger and not cut in half. Am I nuts to do this???? or can I paint it to look like something else. All thoughts welcome. I had a brass bed set and sprayed it hammered grey metal. came out great. |

Be careful with a glass tabletop unless you really love to clean a lot. Glass and wet beards don't play well together. |
thanks but its only the dinett that has a glass top. No dogs allowed |
Most of the home shows are painting the wood white for a crisp updated look. But a lot of people don't like to paint wood. But if the option is tearing it out you might try the painting for a cost effective change. You could get into a big project tearing it out. |
Even painted you still have the vertical lines. I like it painted. You may not. It makes a "cottage" feel to the room. Friend just had her's removed, new wallboard, new texture, new paint. She loves it. |

Are your dogs that short? On a normal table height, mine can just sit their heads right on top of the table. That's why we have a counter height table now. |
Deana, I'd try painting the kitchen first. It might be enough of an update to make it seem fresher for you. If that doesn't work, you'll only be out like $20 for the paint and can tear it out or whatever you want to do!
You should try selling your old stuff on craigslist. People buy all sorts of things from it...and I find it more user-friendly than eBay. |
Real Waynes Coating? Wow, that stuff is expensive. I love the look of it, very cottage-like (IMO). I agree, I would try to paint first. Have you looked at pictures? I'm an avid Pottery Barn website looker, just to see the decorating ideas. I think they are real big on Waynes Coating now, the cottage look is really in. Oh, another great website is Coastal Living.
Can we see before and after pictures? |
I think it's "wainscoting" with either one or two "t"s, and not "Wayne's Coating". |
Ron is right!! I have it too and I am getting ready to paint mine (I hate the varnish the previous owners put on it) It is expensive and I saw a home where it was painted a color, I was thinking of white but really liked the look of the color. I bought this stuff called liquid sandpaper to use before priming. But cannot make my mind up on what color to use. Just another thought. Let me know what you decide I may change my mind |
My bad Ron... |
I just thought I'd mention it... it's really hard to do that without offending people, and I probably didn't succeed.
All I can say is that it's a Good Thing we weren't talking about the wearing of ascots. ROFLMBO I kill me! |
Oh lord. That man just gets punnier everyday!
I have beadboard wainscot in my kitchen. I like it, but it is very old, there's probably about 7 layers of paint on that wood! When we redo the walls in the kitchen, I'm going to put up new and whitewash it, with red toile wallpaper above. I like that look, very victorianey. But then I have an old victorian house. You gotta do what works for you! If you do pull it out, you probably will have to put up new drywall. |
I love it when it's painted bright white with a deep or dark colour on top walls. or if you rip it off you could always use textured paint that covers really good. |
you all have great ideas. Thanks. I tried looking behind some and there is drywall. but I wounder if it is glued? that would mean redo drywall. so next is painting it but with what. I want the room light and maybe paint the cupboards. |
deana, you can skim coat over the wainscotting using a plaster like mixture...then texture...we did that at our old condo....the only thing that you have to be careful of is hanging anything too heavy on the wall...it could crack the skim coat..... |
Did someone say Wainscoting? I personally think it adds warmth and class to an interior. Years ago I installed Oak panelling in the Kitchen. The house is now 31 years old and I have completely remodelled the interior installing new doors with Oak trim in the Kitchen, Entry, Living, Dining and Family Rooms, and new solid oak flooring throughout except for the slate in the entry foyer and kitchen. With the bright white kitchen ceiling and white doors, accented with the Oak trim, and light colored wallpaper, the room has a bright but warm feeling. (IMHO)

George, you did a great job on your house! I like the wainscoting a lot in your place; your tile and hardwood really complement it, too. |
I agree George! I love the look of wainscot and your home shows it beautifully. |
George!!!!! what a great job!!!!
It looks beautiful, you can tell the hard work that you put into it! sooo, whats the next project |
Darcy,
Notice I decided to go with the stained base rather than white. That way I won't have black marks on it from the vacuum, shoes, etc. and it adds a nice contrast to the floor and wall. |
