Patches started smelling quite awful a few days ago and it hasnt gone away...I heard it could be the cause of a UTI...is this likely? |
|
what exactly does patches smell like??? |
uhmm....i think the closest thing i could describe it as is that hes been peeing on himself and playing with some rotten food. |
could patches have gotten into anything? id try to locate the smell...and maybe wash that area and then see what happens..if the smell comes back, it may be time for a vet visit...... |
okay. thanks. |
Could the smell be coming from his ears? Ears can have a erally strong ordor if infected...like a bad cheesey smell. And, not to sound stupied but could he have gotten sprayed by a skunk?
I don't know about UTI's...wouldn't there be other symptoms if that was the problem? |
Well...I know it wasnt a skunk but the ears hmm....thats also a good idea, thanks. |
Have patches checked out by a vet, ears are a common problem in the breed and can cause a huge odour from there if there is a problem.
Have you ever done ear care on patches, ie, learning to wipe the inside of the flap and removing/plucking the hair from the canal to allow the air to circulate in there and not build up an enviroment of moisture or bacteria? A vet can asses the ears as well as if there is another underlying problem, like maybe a skin infection, anal gland problem or a UTI problem causing the smell. If it turns out to be ear related, then a vet can prescribe an ear drop to help get rid of it and if need be if patches is not use to ear care, then a sedation and total clean out of the ears to help get rid of the problem. At the top of the grooming part of this forum there is a photo essay and instructions on ear care if you need it and need to know how to do it. Best wishes for patches. |
If it's a urine-y smell it may also just be that he's got some potty-build-up on his belly/inner thigh. Though I have had more female sheepies than males, I do know that sometimes males relieve themselves down their leg (very similar to the human male "aim" problem I think). Everyone else has some good thoughts too. Smelling ears will let you know if that's it and then you'll know to call the vet. But giving him a wash on his underside may help from a visit to the vet only to find out that it is, in fact, a potty build up (I don't know how else to refer to it). However, if you find that a bath fixes the problem and it comes back shortly after the bath make sure you do get your little guy to vet. |
Thanks for the suggestions......As it turns out, it was a buildup in his glands, which I hadn't heard of. he also had some ear cleaning and now he's a stink-free dog. |

Every forum has to have a comedian I suppose Glad you got the problem resolved, don't feel bad, anal gland problems happen and you are not the only one for this to happen too. So glad all is well with patches now and smelling better too. Pass on a belly rub for patches from us. |
You're not buying my explanation that it was a typo? |
