This Sheepie is currently being held at the City of Edmonton Pound. Animals on this site are waiting to be reclaimed by their owners and are not available for adoption from the City of Edmonton Pound. Stray dogs without identification collars, tattoos or microchips are held in our kennels for 4 days, possible purebreds and animals with identification are held for 10 days before possibly being sent to Edmonton Humane Society (SPCA) for adoption. |

We recently had someone from Alberta inquire about adopting an OES. I've forwarded this on to them. |
It says "identifying markings - tan" ????? Where are they getting tan from? Granted, only his white head shows, but I bet he's grey! Very nice looking dog, too. |
Thank you Nita..
I have also sent this along to the OES Canadian Rescue Coordinator, Marg Trenholm. |

Lol. He probably has some licked spots that turned orangey? |
Hi!
I probably have talked to, or rather e-mailed most of you during the last 3 weeks. I have been delighted to find & join this forum. I can't believe I owned an OES for 9 years, and did not know about it. I could have avoided some errors along the way. Anyway, I contacted the Edmonton pound, and they suggested I call tomorrow to talk to the evaluating vet. I'll hope that this dog is adoptable, and coincidentally since I'm heading to Edmonton this weekend, my family could actually visit the OES. I am not having any luck with e-mailing the Alberta OES Rescue contact in Calgary. My server keeps telling me there is an error. Does anyone have a more recent e-mail for Rhonda? Let me also take this opportunity to thank everyone for being so helpful. I'll keep you posted regarding my ongoing search. Wendy in rural Alberta |
Good Luck, Wendy! |
Keeping my fingers crossed for you Wendy that things will work out.
Keep us posted. Brenda |
Hi Wendy,
Thanks for following up on this lead AND for joining the forum Good Luck! Nita Indiana-Midwest OES Rescue |
I hope he is waiting there for you Wendy. |
I talked to the Vet Tech at the Edmonton pound today, and the news is not good. First, the OES will probably not be sent to the Edmonton Humane Society, because they are overfilled, and he doesn't meet their adoption standards. (I was surprised, because I thought everyone would love to adopt a bobtail). She told me that the OES dog is a little head-shy, but otherwise is very good. She stated that he might be less nervous if they removed the hair from over his eyes. He was wandering around northern Edmonton before he was picked up, and has a case of diarrhea that they have been treating. She will let me see him on Friday, and will be willing to give me a "special consideration", but otherwise if the dog is still in the pound by next Tuesday, July 31st, it will be put down by the vet.
I inquired what would be the usual procedure if I had not contacted them, and she stated there is an all-bred group in Central Alberta that sometimes takes large dogs. I tried to contact them, but the info I received from their website & telephone answering service indicates that they only accept dogs from the surrounding counties. I am between a rock & a hard place. I have not met this dog, and so I have no idea how it will be with my 9yr old OES, my daughter and my overly cautious spouse . Furthermore, I would like some indication of how he's with cows, calves, and horses. (Once I dogsat a friend's dog that would jump up and grab the horses's tails. They tolerated it for a while, but one finally kicked her in the head. We rushed her to the vet, and luckily there was little permanent damage.) If I don't adopt this dog & the all-bred group doesn't accept him, I would feel HORRIBLY GUILTY. I have not yet talked to any OES rescue groups in Alberta. I really need some advice by July 26th 11:30 pm MST. Wendy |
He's such a cute sheepie boy. But you do need to make sure he fits with your situation. Could you adopt him on a trial basis and then find a rescue for him if it doesn't work out? Has the Canadian rescue coordinator gotten involved in his case? |
How about adopting as a possible foster if he doesn't fit in, then someone else can get him from you. It's a thought. |
Valerie wrote: Has the Canadian rescue coordinator gotten involved in his case? .
I have contacted the Canadian rescue coordinator yesterday.. she said that it was being looked into, I have sent her ANOTHER email this morning.. hoping that SOMETHING anything could be done for this boy. I suggested maybe the OES Rescue in Canada/Alberta could pull him, assess him and maybe someone could foster him. What other way could a dog be assessed??? Headshy.. is that the reason for putting him down or overcapacity???? Wendy, could you PM me through the forum.. I have some email addresses that I can give you that may help. |
Let know what is going on with this guy, I will go get him and keep him until a home can be found. I live 10 minutes from the SPCA and the pound. |
Oh, he is such a cutie. Good luck guys, my fingers are crossed. |
casearoo wrote: Let know what is going on with this guy, I will go get him and keep him until a home can be found. I live 10 minutes from the SPCA and the pound. Can you just call the pound and see if you can adopt him? |
They think he is head shy with all of the hair in his eyes.
Edmonton will only destroy dogs when they overcapacitated or the dog can be reformed. They are full right now at the pound and the Human Society. We are hoping that Marg gets in touch with Wendy ASAP. |
Thanks to eveyone who has given this pup a glimmer of hope. You are an awesome group! This is the current situation, I understand someone from the Canadian OES called the Edmonton pound & stated that the OES rescue would be interested in him. Who will be picking him up? According to the VET tech, whoever that person is, and I hope it's me, that person will need a letter to prove they are with, or have permission from the OES Rescue group. How do I get such a letter? Or, how do I join an OES rescue group? We will have to work quickly if we are going to save this pup. Thanks to everyone again! |
Talk with Marg about joining the rescue group..I am glad that things are looking up for him.
PS... My Murphy is head shy as well.. and it has nothing to do with hair in his eyes... he has gotten better in the last four years, but it took patience. I have my fingers crossed for you and this cutie pie. |

I have my fingers crossed for you and this cutie pie. Lucy has been head shy for as long as I've had her. It's only gotten worse as she's gotten old because now she's mostly deaf and she startles easily. I've learned to consider it a quirk. I guess what I'm saying is; don't let something like a little head shyness scare you off or anything. If that's his only problem, I'd take that in a second over a lot of other baggage that they sometimes carry! |
Oh I really hope someone is able to rescue him from being put to sleep. He is beautiful. I don't understand how you just "loose" a sheepdog and never go looking for him. |
Does Marg have someone out there already, who can spring him? If not, contact her via email and get some direction from her.
Bosley can be headshy, too....Depends what angle you are approaching with. He loves the ear scratches, but hates the plucking....so it depends on what he figures is coming at him... |
Things are looking up for this fellow.. Marg has been in contact with the pound and someone from rescue is going tomorrow to spring him with all the necessary paperwork.
I would post her message but I didn't obtain permission to cross post. |
PS.. if "head shy" is a reason to be put to sleep.. someone better rescue me.. I hate sudden movements around my own head. |

My suggestion to you Wendy, is if you have to, the next time you call.. talk to the directory and not the vet tech.. I think you will get farther ahead. |

YAY! That's fabulous news! |
I'm off to Edmonton in an hour. Wish me luck. It's a two hour trip, and I have a document in hand that I hope will help us cut through the red tape to spring this pup. I'll keep you posted as to how it went. wendy |
OH!! Good luck to you!
Thanks so much for helping this boy. |
Good luck! Thank you for helping rescue this cute sheepie boy! |
good luck |
Good Luck Wendy.. I have my fingers crossed for a happy outcome for this boy. |
How'd the trip go Wendy?
Been thinking of you all day! I hope it went well. |
hope things have gone well |
Well we saved him! The poor pup was so scared, that when he was taken out of his kennel and brought into the hallway, he had to be dragged, and he piddled as he left the room. Once in the hall, he settled well, and let us fully examine him. He wagged his tail, and gave a lick. He seems to be a real sweetie.
He is a mess with a 3-4 inch matted coat. Amazingly his teeth are very clean, his ears are dirty but not infected, and his pads are still very pink and smooth. This leads us to believe his is very young, maybe a year old. He is mainly white, but because his coat is very coarse, and has some tan in it, he probably is a mix. He also still has his dewclaws, tail, and gonads. No tatoos were visible. My husband was a little disappointed since he was hoping for a pure bred female, but I know that once I get this pup back to our farm, and assuming he gets along with our other critters, my hubby's heart will melt. The paper work has been filled out, and a dear friend will take him on Monday and clean him up. My family will be away until Wednesday, but we will retrieve him then and bring him home to our farm. I will continue to keep you all updated since you have been so great. And further more, if there is ever a need to help a dog in Alberta, don't hesitate let me know. I am hooked on helping these unfortunate souls. Wendy |
I have helped dogs in need of new homes before. I think lots react the same way. It is all new good or bad, put here and there, then they click into knowing they are safe and a whole different dog comes out. We had one dog that was badly beaten by a male person, that when a male went up to any female the dog attacked. He was great with one person only and no fast movement. The spca would not find him a home. We finally found a female truck driver and is doing great. I would not want to try to break into her truck |
I missed most of this post and was very concerned as I read through it thinking that I might be very upset when I got to the end of the story. It's hard when you read something too late and could have done something if you'd seen it in time. I'm glad you stuck with it and even more glad that he's got a home. Good for you, Wendy! I hoipe everything works out. |
wigglebum wrote: He is mainly white, but because his coat is very coarse, and has some tan in it, he probably is a mix.
Wendy, Could it be that his coat has bleached out on the ends to a tan color? It happens. Check to see if his hair is gray at the roots. Thanks for saving this poor boy, can't wait to see photos! Nita |
Wonderful news Wendy... I have been waiting all day for your update as well.. hoping for the best....
There are few sheepie out of the "west" that have not had their tails docked, tattooed, nor neutered... I guess what I am saying is that he may still be pure. Here's hoping that he fits in with your family. Bless you for doing this. Brenda Dudley and Murphy. |
WOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! |
Any news on the Sheepie boy?.. I saw him still listed on the pound website.
Just wondering? |
I am the "Dear Friend". I am picking him up after work tonight and taking him home until Wendy can come and get him. I will be give him a haircut. He is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever seen. I met Wendy and her Hubby at the pound Friday afternoon.
The dog is so laid back and just wanted to be petted and with a lot of love he will make a great pet. He looks like he is crossed woth a Golden retriever or maybe a collie. He is built like a sheepie, fur and all but he is tan in color. Who knows, maybe he's just dirty and after I clean him up, he maybe white!!! I will take pics and post them. |
Good work, team!!
Can't wait to see the pics of this lucky fellow. |
Great job! to everyone involved
He looks so sheepie-ish from the front! Anxiously awaiting pictures. |
Woooooo Hoooo Cheslea (sorry if I spelt it wrong)....that is awsome.. a playmate for Bunker for at least a few days...
Does Wendy know your history of head banging?...... Can't wait to see pictures....yeahhhhhhhhh |
That's awesome Chelsea!! Can't wait to see pictures. |
Amazing! What a great story. Can't wait for pictures. |

LOL, I'll make sure I don't break his nose!!! |
I picked him up and man did he stink!!! I was talking to Darcy on the phone driving home and he really stunk.
My Mom and I started to scissor cut him and holy crap he is one big mat. It is like a cast on him. We did 2 hours on him and then tried the clipper but the poor guy was so petrified of them. we got about a 1/4 done and he must be crossed with a Wheaton. He has wheaton ears and coloring. Very cute boy but a bag of bones. Whomever had this guy needs to be shot. I have never seen such a cast of fur. That to me is abuse itself. Great disposition and he thinks he is a lapdog. I am in love with him and I am positive Wendy is just going to enjoy him. The girls at the pound have been calling him Barkley. I can't wait for Wendy to see him, he doesn't even look like the same boy from Friday. My Dad took pictures and I will post them soon. |
Oh Cheslea,
That is awsome!!! can't wait to see the pictures of him. How is he interacting with Bunk? |
He is very very skiddish and they stay away from each other. I have him in the back enterance where he slept last night. He woke us up at 4:30 howling. Yes Howling, we thought it was Timber (Jay's husky) but it was him. Very funny.
Bunker is a little jealous, she peed in the house last night. I am going to try and finish cutting him tonight. |
I am so awed by people who go out of their way to assist "hands-on" as you're doing.
It takes a special person to look past the filth and fear to find the beauty beneath. I eagerly look forward to more updates and pictures. Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping this boy. |

Yeah! Great job guys. It's amazing how big of hearts people in this community have! Way to go, and I, like everyone else, am SO excited to see pictures! |
poor fellow! yeah, i cant imagine anyone allowing their dog to get to that horrible point of skin and bones/ matted hair....sigh...cant wait to see pics of him!!!
tell bunky that shes okay and to stop peeing in the house...lol..... |
Good work, Chelsea! Can't wait to see how he looks when you get him cleaned up. |
I started cutting but have given up. He will need to be sedated to finish. He is petrified of the clippers and his fur is like cast. Poor guy. Wendy has her work cut out for herself. |
awwww Poor guy.. Wendy gets him today? |
Yep just waiting for her to phone me!! |
He is so cute, though! |
OMG Cheslea.. he is so cute.. I am thinking OES/Beardie.. that might explain the tail.
He looks unsure, scared.."what does my future hold"....How can people do the things they do.. it truly baffles me. |
Hi I'm back at my farm, and I just need to complete a few chores before I'm off to Edmonton to pick up "Barkley". Chelsea, great pictures! I hoped you took some before you began the great dematting episode. I will work on him with scissors & I have two special dematting combs that I use on my barn cats when they start to mat after winter. Thanks Chelsea for all your work, and thanks to everyone else for their support. I am going to print off the suggestions on how and what to bring to pick up a sheep dog. I'm sure it's going to be an interesting 2 hour drive home. I'll keep you all informed. I've been anxious all week to be able to pick him up. Wendy |
Here he is, One big cast of fur. |
Oh, he is cute. I think he looks happy. I think that rescues know that they have been saved. Don't you? My brother just adopted a pup from a shelter, and he is the best dog. I really think he is grateful, and knows he was saved. |
Oh... he's beautiful! |
What a beautiful boy he is! I can't wait to see the clipped boy under the hair.
He seems real nice, looks comfortable with you. |
He's a beautiful big boy and you have a beautiful big heart for helping him |
Wendy picked "Barkley" up tonight. I was sad to see him go but Wendy is an awesome lady and I know he's going to very very loved and happy with her and her family.
Wendy, Thank you for giving this beatuful boy another chance at life. |
Oh he is a doll. And he does look happy, knowing he's in a furever. Thanks for adopting this boy. |
I'm sorry that I've taken so long to get back to all the concerned & caring OES members. I have spent the last 48 hours grooming & playing with this special boy. Chelsea had nicely started the job, but it took me from 8:30am-3:00pm on Thursday to finish him. I did take a 1 hour break, and he was VERY patient. I just used scissors, and some mats were so large, they looked like a large rodent. I finally removed the last remaining mats which were disguising themselves as scrotum #2 & #3.
My vet said he is in great health & is about 18 months old. She definately sees the OES in him, but is baffled what could contribute to his size & some apricot/tan areas. Perhaps standard poodle? Irish wolfhound? Some of his white areas are very soft, like the OES undercoat. Anyways she is going to do some research and get back to me. He is an adorable boy & is getting along with my daughter, OES and cats. He has a healthy fear of the cows & horses. The more time I spend with him, the more I am convinced of his OES personality. He is a clown, and loves to pounce on his toys. Imagine this huge dog, the size of a great Dane pouncing and bopping around. He snuck into our living room, and matter of factly climbed onto the couch and gave me a lick, before I even realized he had entered the room. He also loves to do the OES block when playing. I promise to have pictures asap. Right now he looks sort of like a skinny poodle/shaved OES/ and very tall airedale terrior. I am so glad that this sweetheart was saved from the needle & I am very optimistic that he will fit in with our family. I'm in all of your debt for helping Chelsea & I save this special pup. Wendy |
Thank you very much for saving this big guy!!! |
I new some people who had oes/poddle mix that was very much oes, with a splash of different colors here and there. So you never know. |
Wonderful news!!! Can't wait to see pictures of his new hair-do. |
he looks a bit like derby we think he has some great pyrenees in him ,, so glad he found a great home.. |
It's been two months since we adopted "Bojangles" (renamed from Barkley), and things are going great!!! I placed some pictures on the gallery but have not yet loaded them on to my posts. BJ is loved by everyone that he meets. He is doing very well at obedience lessons, and has been awesome with our cats & older OES. Unfortunately, he has chased some calves but their moms let him know his error.
About 3 weeks ago, a little kitten appeared in our barn. No mother cat, or any other kittens were found. We guessed that someone "dropped" the kitten off we the hopes of us adopting it, or having it survive on its own. The cool thing is that BJ has adopted it. In fact, he has given up his warm doghouse for the kitten on several cool nights. We are already experiencing frost at -5 C (24-28 F). BJ has been a gentleman, and slept outside on the deck. Last night I finally convinced him to go into his house, since the kitten could easily cuddle next to him. I once again want to thank EVERYONE on this forum that helped us find and adopt this pup. I'll try to keep in touch & figure out the pictures soon. Wendy |
It is so nice to hear from you.. and thanks for the wonderful update on BJ.
That is so sweet about him and the kitty. Love to see a picture of the two of them together. Brenda Dudley and Murphy |
Thanks for the update! Sounds like he is doing great.
Looking forward to seeing the new pictures. |
OMG, he is adorable. I will have to make my way out there soon to see him. He sounds like he has been the perfect addition to your family Wendy. Congrats. |
