He had a bath last Tuesday night, and I was thinking of bathing him as he is getting pretty dirty, but I don't want to dry him out. I am taking him back to the vet on the 1st of August, so I have some time to watch this. I know he has been scratching his neck because we put a collar on him, but the elbows mistify me. We don't have fleas or ticks in my area. Any suggestions for dry skin??? Maybe I can rub something on his elbows. |

This may just be a climate adjustment. Though I'm from the states, we are south of Ontario and we get pretty humid so it's possible that your pup's body is just adjusting to the change in moisture in the air (again, I'm not sure if Ontario has similar humidity in the summer...but the humidity we have without any big bodies of water near always mystifies me). It could also just a hot spot. If you've checked your pup for fleas (he could have brought them with him or gotten them from another dog who was shipped when he was) I would take him to the vet to get him checked out. It may just be a dry spot but finding out for sure will set your mind at ease and it's possible the vet will have an easy solution which will set your puppy's itch at ease Good luck! |
No fleas...I really think it's just dry patches. We are in the High Desert so it is usually very dry here. I think he will just need a moisturizing conditioner when I bathe him...all else is GOOD! |

You can always dot a couple of dabs of bag balm on right after his bath too to keep it moist. It won't hurt him if he licks it. He'll be fine. |
Thanks...I need to do that...I think that would help. Where do you get Bag Balm...is it a drug store item. I know I've seen it but don't know where. |
You can find it at all the farm supply stores. I'm not sure where it would be otherwise in CA. |
I have seen in drug stores before, but I'm not sure about in CA either. Check the lotion aisle of Rite Aid or Walgreens. |
Ok...In my area that would translate into a feed store...we have a few out here that I know carry it...thanks |
emu oil at health food store worked great tkes care of dry patchs. Any if itchy tea tree oil ( the good stuff) works great itchy anything. emu oil can take itch out and moistureize also. humans and pets. |
Tea tree oil is great...I will keep that in mind. Going to try a puppy bath and the bag balm since I have it now.
thanks |
Ok...the bath was interesting...he doesn't love it, but the Bag Balm seems to work...he will just have greasy elbows for a while...thanks all! |
Definitely keep putting stuff on it until it clears up. Copper is having a bout with the same thing. Unfortunately, I did not really pay that much attention to it and only sporadically put something on it. It got so dry that he developed a callous that the vet said could lead to infection. So now I'm putting dermalone ointment on it regularly so he will not have to take antibiotics. I wish I would have taken it more seriously. I just thought oh a little dry skin no big deal. |
