Don't tell ME these dogs aren't smart!!

They say one of the last signs that a dog is nearing its final days on earth is a lack of appetite. If that's the case, Dresdan (her proper name, what we call her when we're mad at her!) will never die.

This is a dog that's weeks away from her 14th birthday, whose hips are so bad that she cannot get to a standing position on a hardwood or smooth floor by herself, who cannot go up or down stairs by herself. 8O It's been posted on various threads here and quoted from various sources that dogs do not have the ability to think and reason like a human. At least with Drezzie, I beg to differ. :lmt: Here is her latest story.

On Friday, Dale had to take his father to a dr's appointment. Before he left around noon, he made sure to take her out to do her business. Good girl, she went both ways. When he brought her back in the house he gave her two biscuits, made sure the house was "dog-proofed" (you may recall her passion for opening the kitchen cabinet and pulling out the garbage can) and went on his merry way.

About 3:00 (a mere 3 hours later), Sarah (daughter) called me at work, screaming, "You won't believe what she did THIS time!" My heart sank. "What now?" was all I could muster to ask.

Sarah washed some pots that were in the sink before leaving for work that morning and put the dish towel on the counter. I had a full loaf and a half loaf of Italian bread in a bag on the kitchen counter, and they had been there for at least 2 days without Drez bothering them. (She hasn't been able to counter-surf for years now, so as long as we put stuff way in the back of the counter, we know she can't get at anything.) After cutting off some bread, Sarah moved the bag near the dish towel, never giving it a second thought.

After Dale left, Drez's devious little mind went into overdrive. She was at the back door when he left, not a good sign. It usually means she wants to go "bye-bye" too. :plead: And if she doesn't get to go bye-bye, all bets are off. :x So in recreating the scene of the crime, here's what we determined happened.

She walked back into the kitchen, looked up and spied the bag of bread on the counter. "Hmmmmmmm - lunch!!" :bulb: A bit of the dish towel must have been hanging down over the counter. She figured out that if she pulled the dish towel, the bread would come with it. She tore open the bag and got the loaves out, walking around the house with at least one loaf in her mouth at a time. She would stop at intervals to eat a bunch, then picked up what was left and kept up her journey. Of course, along the way she also POOPED in about 10 different places.

When Sarah got home, the house looked and smelled TERRIBLE!! :twitch: There were trails of bread crumbs ALL over, as well as trails of poop. She followed the trail into the dining room and saw that Drez also found a candy dish that had been on the bottom shelf of a plant stand for YEARS and that she had never bothered with - until now. The candy was all individually wrapped, but it still made a tasty dessert, wrappers and all!! Sarah continued to follow the trail of crumbs, which also led to Drez's bed in the foyer and in the TV room. Since she was the only one home, the job of clean-up fell all to her, poor kid!! Boy, was she ever MAD!!! :x    :x

Then today, we figured out even more that went through Drez's mind as she was enjoying her snacks. We found chunks of bread crumbs in the candy dish, and also found chunks of bread crumbs in a William Sonoma barbecue set case that was open on the floor. The case was also scratched up a bit inside.

Aha!! The mad hider was at it AGAIN! You may remember stories of her digging in plants and hiding her dog biscuits. Apparently she was trying to do that with some of the bread but couldn't find anything that she could actually DIG through. So she pushed come of the candy aside, dropped some crumbs, ate some of the candy, then went on to the bbq set case. The scratches were from her pawing at it to see if she could hide some of her stash in there. Finding out she couldn't, she just left the telltale evidence of crumbs and went off to finish her lunch.

Geesh!!! Who says these dogs can't think??

ROFL, I'm sorry I can't help laughing Drez is quite a girl :clappurple:
Sounds like she had a good afternoon!  You sure she ate all the bread and hasn't hid some away for later?
That is totally hilarious. I wish you had a spy cam on her. She is a hoot! Go Drez Go!!
wow....
I am glad that I'm not your daughter, that would have been horrible to have to clean up! Drez is so smart, did you check under the beds for hiding?
We need to invent a sheepie collar cam!
Oh my, that would be an awful surprise!!

I hope both daughter and dog have recovered from that one!
Oh, Chris, that is TOO funny! Not for you guys or your daughter, I'm sure...but you told the story so well!
Bad girl, Drez, but good for you for having so much life in you! :D
hahaha..im sorry, its really not funny to come home to a poopie explosion but at least I know im not alone.....

Drez, what can I say...bad good girl 8)
I don't know about smart but definitely driven... and hungry!
I feel bad for Sarah but I have to admire Drez's spunk!
Yup, that girl has definitely not lost any of her spunk! If her hips weren't bad, she'd STILL be acting like a puppy!

I found another hiding place yesterday. She was standing really close to another plant stand and looking down. Guess what she was looking at??? Another stash of bread!

Smart, hungry, spunk, driven - all describe Drez!
LMAO ...very funny...except for the loads of poop. 8O
What a spunky girl!!
Where there is a will there is a way even if into the golden oldies stage.

Awww drezzie you are a determined darling and what your mommy posted had me in fits of laughter.

Go Drez, sarah make sure chris in home first before you next time.
Poor Drezzie!!! (And your daughter). I have opened the door to that smell once or twice and the results are never good. I am glad to hear at 14 years-old Drezzie still can get into trouble, they stay pups forever, don't they?
LMAO @ hiding the evidence....!!!

Great story...I hope Drezzie didn't get a belly ache
that is too funny
What a funny story! That girl still has lots of spunk left in her. I do feel badly for poor Sarah having to clean up all the mess. But, it'd be hard to stay mad at Drezzie. To have that much spark for life at her age and with her bad hips is truly wonderful. :hearts:
