He will not stay still either. I'm an amateur(sp?) at this, and I was wondering if there was any particular way I'm supposed to hold his face or head to brush him under there.... He refuses to keep his head still. We understand he is a puppy, but at the same time he is used to the grooming table because we have put him on there at least twice a week since he was 8 weeks. He just doesn't like being brushed under there... |

Do you have a grooming arm attachment on your table to hold his head up? - it really helps.
If the mat is that bad I would use a mat rake (something with a blade) and split it up and get rid of the bad hair. It will grow back! For maintenence, get him used to brushing there and everywhere. Do the areas he doesn't like for real short periods, and make sure you stop and move to a different area BEFORE he gets fussy. Keep coming back to the area, then go to an easy spot. Lots of praise for good behavior. Also, make sure you move to a different area on your own initiative. If you stop brushing there everytime he acts up, ...... you are training him to be bad. He is actually getting a reward (you stopping) for being aggressive or bossy. "If I misbehave I make them stop." NOT something you want to have happen! |
Yeah, what she said!! If you hold by that little bit at the front of the beard it should help with some control. Just don't rip it out!!! |
I don't have a rake but I have used the last couple of tines on my comb to break up the occassional big matt.
As the others said, if he is a squirmer, the table arm would help you. |
I agree with what the other s have stated. Obe hates(should be in bold capital letters) being brushed under his chin. I make him hold still and only for a short period of time. |
Yes, We do use the attachment with the lead on him....He's definitely a squirmer. You can brush him anywhere else and he doesn't mind...even around his toe pads. He does not like you brushing under his mouth and neck area, AT ALL....
As for the behavioral issues and letting him get away with rewarding him with bad behavior, I agree and I thank you for that suggestion. I will DO what you suggested. As for holding some of the "beard" as I'm brushing him, I'm going to attempt to try it tonight!! Some dogs have their area's in which they just don't like to be touched (mostly toes and ears). I now know that's most likely his area. Thank you very much. |
I have definitely been guilty of doing a quick brush when I find something on our guy's coat finding myself sticking him between my legs to get his chest or face. He is good about brushing, but only when he is resigned to the fact that we are in for the long haul. |

I use that maneuver a lot. I also reverse it for butt brushing or even a quick clip. |
Me too. Or sometimes I sit on Barney... |
I would like to thank you for your suggestions....It worked and he is mat free under his mouth!! WOO WOO!!
It took a lil' finesse and about 45 minutes, but it was a team effort. I didn't let Matisse have his way (and give in as usual). Thanks again!! |
Yay! :D |
Good job! |
