My Mom had it done in her old house and it turned out great....
The only thing I didn't like is it was still yellow. UGLY!!! It is a very common thing here for people to buy the refurbished claw foot tubs to go in there retro style houses. People will pay a pretty penny for one too. |
Robin, I have a contact for you if you want it.....they have done several clients and a few friends.....
ps...they looked great! |
I was just thinking about this - glad you asked!
Is it very expensive to have done? Does the new surface last? Shellie |
We are getting ready to look into this also.
We checked out the tub liners already. No way. I'm wondering how the refinish surface holds up to puppy feet? |
We actually painted our bath tub and it's awesome! It's some sort of colored epoxy resin. You acid wash the tub/shower and then mix the two parts together and paint away. No one can tell either! |
Sure Darcy that would be fine. We are still talking about it and it might be a few months before we do it. But it never hurts to have contacts. We hadn't picked out anybody to do it yet anyways. |
I have no personal experience but I did watch one of those home improvement shows where they refinished an old tub and it looked amazing. It totally looked brand new! I'd be anxious to see before and after pictures if any of you decide to go this route! |
We had it done and for about a year it looked great. Then it started to chip or pull away from the original. There are now large pieces missing on the bottom. We had it proffesionaly(sp) done. At the moment it looks terrible. We are going to have the tub replaced. I highly DO NOT recommend it. |

That is exactly what I was looking at doing yesterday. They have the kit at Lowes. I am sort of afraid it will look like "tried and couldn't". Is it hard to do? Is it hard to keep clean? Tell me the truth Maxmm, am I going to screw this up? I think I'm going to try this - it beats paying someone else to do it. And, it can't look worse than it already does. Shellie |
The most important part is the preparation of the surface to be painted. Make sure it is clean and sand it properly. |
The prep and the brush are the two most important things. We did the acid wash because the tub was in good condition but given the opportunity to do it again, there are a couple of spots that I would have had Bob sand also. He actually did the labor because I wanted to redo another part of the house first so this turned into his project! I watched part of it and it was just like painting and it's easier because the product doesn't hold the brush lines nearly as badly as paint.
I don't think you'd have any problems at all, Shellie!!! |
Cool! Guess what I'm doing this weekend!
Like I said, it almost has to be better than the tub is now. Most of the finish is worn off the inside. The tub is probably 70 years old, and was worn when we moved in. The outside is perfect, and I'm a little worried about the outside vs the inside, and will there be a visible edge... I tend to overthink the details before I start anything. I'll let you all know how it goes. Shellie |
Wishing you lots of luck, Shellie. |
It sounds cool! Is your tub white? Does the paint come in just white, or colors too?
My ugly tub/toilet/sink set is inA-1 perfect condition. It is the only bathroom in the house, so gets lots of use. I keep wishing there was something wrong with it so I could justify changing it. This is it - with cute Wrigley modeling it - |
