I know some may not agree with me here... but have you thought about only feeding her normal dry food, the amount she will need for the day left out all day for her, and add nothing to it? That is what I finally had to do for Dancer..... eventually she should get hungry and eat it, even if she nibbles throughout the day, like Dancer and Sky do... |
I have never had a problem with getting Jack and Annabelle to eat. I can tell you though, we went through a not eating stage with both kids. We were fixing the kids food and then fixing ours. It was getting to be a hassle, not to mention it wasn't very nutritional having hot dogs 3 days a week and fish stick the other 4. LOL We went to the pediatrician who said put the food down for breakfast, if they don't eat it, put it down for lunch, again at dinner. When they get hungry, they will eat. It took a week of strong wills begging for chicken mcnuggets, but now they will eat the veggies. They don't eat them by the spoonfulls or anything, but they do eat them. Stacey, might be on to something about leaving it dry and letting her get hungry enough to eat it. I hope you figure it out soon. Stormi and co. |
I did leave it down for her, and still do. The problem with her is that she will eat it once when i put something new in it, and then will not touch it again if I mix that same stuff in. Also, when it sitts out for a while i think it loses the smell or taste or something. Is that true? Anyway, I end up throwing that away and putting a new portion in, in hopes that she will eat it. The problem is that I feed her human food also, 'cause I am scared that she isn't getting enough food. But its backfiring because now she only wants human food. I think you both are right, I have to tough it out and not give her anything but her kibble for a while. No snacks for a week or so and see if she does improve her eating. I will try it starting tomorrow. |
Some of my first posts here were about Dancer not eating...lol...
If you want to take a look at that thread and see if you find anything useful it is here... http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=598&highlight=eat |
Doggies don't starve themselves, but they are extremly stubborn. It took Paige nearly 6 months to figure out I'm not cooking for her. As long as the pup is playful and healthy, a few missed meals won't hurt. Soon her tummy will tell her mind, "So what if it tastes awful, EAT."
Also they go thru eating fits......just like kids. Put the food down for 30 minutes. If it's eaten great, if not remove it and try again 8-10 hours later. The alternative is to go to a BARF diet. I guarantee she'll eat everything!!! Yes, puppies do fine on it.......vets hate it because it goes against everything they are taught and believe. |
Our big guy was finnicky for years until we started to doctor his kibble a little bit. We used to put about 1/3 to 1/2 of a cup of clear Chicken Broth in with the dry kibble. He loved it. At it all, ate it always.
He'd lick all the broth then devour the kibble. Swanson's or College Inn is probably better for your dog than the Trader Joe version because it doesn't have any onion powder in it. They come in a tall aseptic box, just like juice boxes, only quart-sized (or 1 litre). |
My advice is stop feeding the pup "people food", unless you want them to be a beggar. Max is a very finicky eater too. Especially when he is in unknown places. The last time a friend watched him,he didn't eat for 2 days, but once he got comfortable he ate it all. Trust me they will eat at some point. When I was up north for 3 weeks, I even mixed in wet foot, he ate it sometimes but not all. Max goes a day with out eating every so often it seems, for no apparent reason. I will leave the food out for him until he decides he wants it. I've noticed he likes to eat either when I'm in the shower (because he knows I'm not going anywhere at that moment) or at night when I am sleeping. He also will sit next to me while I eat, but he knows he is not getting any. When I finish and he doesn't see me put any scraps in his dish, he then realizes there are no leftovers, so he nibbles on his food. He will grab a mouthfull and bring it in the room I am and then eat it. Max will also eat food that has been siting out for days. I don't think the taste or smell goes away. His bag of food sits open in my closet, and it has a very strong aroma after a month. Good luck and don't worry about him starving! |
I agree - stop feeding extras! Give her the dry food - put it down - 15 minutes take it back up - if she hasn't eaten - she'll have to wait until the next meal. She'll learn to eat when it's given to her - and as it is given to her. She's testing you Marley - she wants to good stuff - and you shouldn't give in. She will not starve - don't worry!
