Question re little lady in heat

Hi guys

New memeber of the forum and have already received some excellent info and advice from members for which I am very grateful

I have another question - Paris 1.5 years old has come into heat- do we need to give her any supplements to help her thru it. She has lost alot of blood and is very larthargic. She is a recue and is still on the road to recovery ( since March )from a very bad situation. I dont want this heat cycle to wear her down.

P.S .. I will post pictures as soon as I locate the digital camera which is awol at the moment!!!

Kind Regards,
Lorraine, Robbie and Paris ( from Ireland)

I have no experience with this but I wanted to thank you for taking in a rescue sheepie and for giving her the extra attention she needs to get back on track to being a wonderful beloved pet. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your sweetie. . .
I don't have any experience with females in heat either, but wanted to say I'm glad you joined us (officially!) and look forward to those pics when you find your missing camera.
No, you can't hurry the heat cycle along, especially if she has other medical issues. One of my girls was especially messy so I put pants on her. You can put a pad in the pants to avoid spotting the pants and the house. Problem is they are also swollen and tender back there. Of course you know she must be watched at all times and kept indoors as much as possible. The last thing your little girl needs right now is to be bred.

Sounds like she is in Proestrus which can last from 2-15 days. In addition to the spotting, she may be nervous, hyper and grouchy.

Estrus is the part of the cycle where she can breed and will last from 3-21 days. She must be kept away from the boys and even going outside to pee may bring in some suitors. (I had a Siberian Husky who could draw boys from the next county........and we lived in a very rural area!!)

The third part of the cycle is Metestrus also called diestrus. She can not be bred at this time and won't appreciate any boy around who will want to get a sniff. The vaginal discharge will change to whitish, lasting about a week. The vulva swelling could take up to 2 months to go down.
Good info Susan!
Sometimes they can be on the lethargic side, usually it is the hormones & how they are feeling, some can be highly strung and uptight, others just very quiet for the time. I have one that mopes around like that for the 21 days. A slug.

Just be careful with her while in, some bitches at that crucial time will go looking for a mate. I had one, my previous oes girl, if she could of she would of, I had to keep an eye on her when she went outside to make sure she did not get out. 8O

Just make sure she is on a high quality food with all in it to help her, they really don't need supplementation as it is a part of mother nature happening. Sometimes too, they might go off there food for a couple of days that is normal as well. :D

Some with the bleeding/discharge are heavy others not so, but all completely normal and it does not affect them in any way with the blood loss. She is only a youngster so maybe her first or 2nd heat so a bit heavier there in the blood discharge, all completely normal and not to worry there. :D

Best wishes later on too for the spaying, did you decide on which vet you are going with?
Thanks for the advice ladies its very much appreciated.

Ive bought her some liver and Ill boil that for her dinner tomorrow. It will help replace any iron lost . She has a very good diet overall- So Im hoping it wont take too much out of her. I can always take her to the vet and have her blood count done in a few weeks just to be sure . Thats something that I would recommend once a year, as it will help catch any issues early. We have 2 greyhounds ( 1 racing and 1 retied )and its great to keeping them in tip top condition. Its important to mind them considering their frame... although Ruddock ( retired) is heading for the fattest greyhound in living history award, if he doesnt cut down on the biscuits.Mojo is the lady , very proud of her figure she is . I posted a picture of her ....... as you can see she looks down her nose at the world, but underneath she is doll.

On to the vet issue- I will be doing some further investigations and will be waiting until October/ Spetember just to be safe. We're thru the worst of it now so it really wont matter waiting a bit longer. I still dont want her having to go thru an over night stay - if I pop out to the shop when I get back you would think I was gone for 5 years the way she carries on . So waiting a few more months for her to settle in properly is the best option. The up date on the digital camera is that someone borrowed it ( so the other half tells me ) and as to its current whereabouts it is a complete mystery... Irish men !!!
Talk to your vet. Last few girls were not kept overnight. They were groggy and the vet knew I fully understood their care so sent them home the same day.

I still remember Clancy and Irish Wolfhound walking sideways to her sleeping area due to still being "drunk" from the drug after effects. She slept it off and was fine the next day.....of course wanting to go outside and run. Wasn't real pleased at being confined for a few days.

Yes, you do have to wait a bit before you can have the operation due to the higher blood supply in the area. Sept/Oct sounds about right.
Merlin and Avalon did not need to be kept overnight either. I just had to bring them back in to the vet the next morning for a quick check to make sure everything was ok. Because my vet knew I wanted them home the same day their surgeries were done in the morning. So they spent a few hours recovering at the vets and were ready to come home by afternoon.
I have never had to leave a dog overnight for a spay or neuter.
They have all had he surgeries early in the morning and they sent them home in the afternoon.... with a few extra pain pill. :)
My vet keeps the boys overnight and the girls for two nights.
I sure it is a bit of a moneymaker for him too.

He keeps the girls pretty well sedated for the first 24. They all have to be eating and drinking, peeing and pooping before they go home. They do have someone with them at all times to observe them, so it's not like they are just left alone.

And I do the fact that I've never had to bring any of them back for any post-op issues. They love going to the vet, so it isn't a stressful visit for them - just don't stand between them and the door to the clinic unless you want to be knocked over.
Sophie came home same day, as well. She needed to be kept quiet, and we used an Elizabethan collar on her for a few days to keep her from licking her stitches. My boys all came home same day, too. I had expected that Sophie's recovery would be longer and more difficult considering a spay is more involved than a neuter, but that wasn't really so. Sherman (her litter mate) was neutered same day and their recovery was fairly similar, although Sherman needed a collar longer because he was much more inclined to lick.
Dutchess was done in early morning and came home late afternoon, she was back to normal behaviour the next day and it was a struggle to keep her not even semi quiet :D I bought a cheap pair of boxer shorts and then put a hole in the back waist and tied it to her collar to keep them on, they did keep her from licking and found it was much easier than the big collar
