Quick work-related vent!

Okay, so I was just asked by one of our summer interns to proofread their final project. Um, I don't think so!! I have better things to do with my time than proofread a college student's project (while I'm at work). The thing is, I don't know if their supervisor told them to get things proofread by me or if they are just doing it themselves. (And their supervisor is higher up than me.)

They've been given the red carpet treatment here and act like they own the place. I've never seen an internship program like this before. It is grating on all the people here.

My small recommendation is to do it. The positives outweigh the negatives. Brownie points from the supervisior, if they did ask the intern to ask you.

And remember, that intern will not be an intern forever and you may professionally run into them again.

I completely agree. I can see how it is frustrating to have an "underling" put work on you but it is a good way to ensure that the final product is good, might score points with the supervisor, makes you look like a good team player, and you never know where that intern might be someday. One guy I remember as an annoying intern at a place I used to work is now a state senator. Another has gone on to a senior management role in the federal governmeny. Another is about to make partner at a large and influential lawfirm. You just never know. . .
Eh, I doubt I'll run into any of these kids again, plus they're in a whole different industry than me, really.

What really irks me is that they are being paid more per hour than I am (if my salary converted to per/hour pay)...
That totally sucks. :(
If I remember, isn't your job as a writer or to proof read, or something of that sort? If so seems like a no-brainer that someone would come to you (unless your whole office does the same thing). I wouldn't have an accountant proofread something for me (no offense intended to the accountants out there. I'm a numbers guy as well).
I see where you're coming from. I think it would be one thing if it were an intern that you worked closely with, or even someone you were friendly with but to have some kid that works under another person come to you asking for help like it's your job is another thing. Unless I really hated the kid, I'd do it but I'd grumble about it later, too. Nobody likes to be made to feel like an underling-- especially by a college kid.
:D Is it possible that the intern respects your ability and that is the reason you were asked to help him?

That's what I was thinking. I would have been flattered... :D

Unless it is not appreciated, but just tossed to you like a task to do. Then I would be pissed..
Wow, high paid intern..... I thought most interns don't get paid. :?

It would be the nice thing to do... to proofread it.

That's it exactly.

No, it isn't flattery, I guess except the fact that I'm the nicest of the 4 proofreaders so they probably chose me for that reason. I've never spoken to them before so it's not like they know who I am at all, so it's not like they know what my ability is or not...

Yes, it's my job to proofread for my company, which I have no problem for. My biggest gripe with it is that they are taking this internship for college credit and have to do a final project for it, which I don't think I should be correcting their schoolwork, which in essence I'm doing.

But, I have no choice. I have to proofread it. But I did grumble!!

I don't know, either! I've never heard of extern before...
I've hired summer interns and they were paid. It was looked on as a recruitment tool as well as a community service. Occasionally they were looked on as a resource, but not often, since they required about as much training as work they produced.

They were generally given menial or repetitive tasks since:
A) nobody liked to do those tasks nor to train a very temporary intern, and therefore were happy to train them to do it, and

B) that's generally the best / largest amount of work product you can get from them.

I enjoyed working with most of them.
