Help! Goes Mad when hears Applause

We had our first VERY embarrasing moment at a Dog Show a few weeks ago.... Everytime people went to hoot and holler, Matisse went BALLISTIC when he heard clapping and yelling. We couldn't stop him from barking and jumping. This was his first time attending a dog show (he wasn't showing).

Any advice?? We told him no when he did it, then we put our hand in front of his snout and said no. We tried to ignore it, and then when people started to look at us we had to take him outside. This happened three times at three key moments in the day at this event.

I do know it's normal for puppies to act like this because it's new to them. Any help out there??? Suggestions perhaps ?

I've had private sessions with a dog trainer, but it has always been in the privacy of my own home. He's fine at the house when we'd clap and scream "WOO WOOO"...

Thanks

I don't know a solution, but I want you to know you are not alone.

Our Oliver (1st OES) did that too - except he WAS the one in the ring being shown. He totally went bonkers - like he was possessed. LeAnne couldn't take it anymore and he was retired! He participated in events with no clapping after that - therapy dog work and sheep herding, and all was well.
I would keep taking him to dog shows to try and neutralize the behavior. It might have been the combination of all of the dogs & the excitement. Maybe take him to local events (ball games, etc.) where there will be crowds, etc. I know you want to show him, so you might want to try this for a while. Whenever he behaves, keep rewarding.
Is he is in a regular puppy class? I would tell the trainer and ask to work on it at the end of class with the other pup owners doing the clapping.

Also, kid's baseball games, soccer games, softball games have lots of clapping and yelling - might be a good place to start. Some of our city parks always have games going on. Try sitting with him at a comfortable distance and over time (days, weeks) move closer. Praise and a treat for staying calm. You might even get to know some of these people, who might volunter to have some clapping practice with him. He's so cute, you'll draw people in to help!

For less than 50 bucks, you can get a digital recorder (updated tape recorder) at some place like Best Buy. Record the clapping and play it often at home. I think, but I am not sure, that you can transfer the sound s from the digital recorder to the computer. Using an editing program, make your own CD of the applause-quiet-applause, with various spacings between the sounds so it isn't as predictable. You may get tired of it, but it might work.

Or google for sounds of applause. There's a site with some free ones.
Try this one to see what happens (it's not free though)

i love your stuff where in fla do you live?
I am definitely going to take him to the local games!! Great advice...I dunno why I didn't think of that....

I'm in Central Florida (clermont), Suzptcruise. Thank you!
Just keep taking him out and about everywhere where there is lots of people and different noises.

I use to take mine to a school and when the kids were coming home as soon as they saw a sheepie at the school gates all over them with hands and noise. Great socialisation there and getting use to all sorts of situations.

Take him to more dog shows just to watch, put him on a lead and walk him around socially at the shows, let him sniff and wander around with you on the lead to get use to all the noises and crowds.

Correct him on the lead with a little check of the lead and with a firm NO as you do it, this way he is learning you won't tolerate any nonsense.

Praise him when he stops and I also put them into a sit and just let them watch all that is going on around them at a show and while quiet I praise and keep talking to them, any barking and nonsense then a correction and a firm NO and no fussing over them then. It is such an exciting day with the lil ones there first time around a show, but little steps bit by bit till eventually no big deal to them with all the strange new things happening there.

Another good socialisation for them too is walking along a busy shopping strip, you are then getting them use to all types of different situations then.

Love the naughty babies and there first time at a show, you never know what to expect from them 8O  :lol:but it is a fun time learning together.
I know this doesn't help at all but I had this hilarious vision of putting those hearing protection headphones (like you where when shoot a gun or work a jackhammer) on him. How cute would that be?

With all the WooWoo screaming and the headphones, all you'd have to do is give him a beer and he'd be a Nascar fan!
