Why are the brakes squeaking on my car....

when I had the brakes replaced/fixed a few weeks ago? I had my car in for an oil change and told them the brakes were making squeaking noises. Yep, they needed to be fixed/replaced (whatever one does to brakes) and they were fine. But yesterday they started making noise again. I know the answer is to call Tuffy's and tell them what is happening. But I don't want to have to take the car in, I want magic to happen and the noise go away!

I'm having a pity party for myself today.

Sometimes a glaze builds up on the rotors (from dust and other grime) and can cause some squeaking. When you drive next, try slamming them a few times from a decent speed to try to knock it out. Sometimes that helps.

Unfortunately, some brakes just squeak, too. Better brake pads can sometimes make a difference. My Mini ones never sounded right until finally I got tired of it and switched to a semi-performance pad. That did the trick and I never heard it again.

Ummm, I wouldn't do a panic stop to try to quiet your pads. You're more likely to warp a rotor than succeed in reducing the squeal.

I'd bring it back to the mechanic and tell them you are hearing the same noise that caused you to bring it in in the first place.

Could be the rotor/pad combination just isn't a quiet one, like Jill has suggested, or they need to add some adhesive to the back of the pads so they don't resonate. It could be the pad is badly worn (either normally or abnormally) and the wear-out indicator is functioning as designed.

You need a mechanic you can trust to look at it and let you know what the problem is. We can guess here all day, but a pair of experienced eyeballs need to be put on the system. *

*Sorry to all the one-eyed mechanics of the world, no slight intended.

You know, I didn't think about newer brakes and BBS and all that. I used to have an old Omni that I delivered pizza in and I got all kinds of buildup on the rotors. My brake guy suggested trying that and it worked great. You have to make sure to brake in a straight line and evenly though. You may not be able to do that now with anti-lock technology.
Actually I wonder if the anti-lock technology might help prevent a warped rotor.

Warped rotors happen when the calipers squeeze really hard and the wheels have really good grip and the forces or the wheel wanting to turn and the caliper locked on and not moving warp the rotor. It happens especially when the brakes are already very hot.

Maybe antilock gives such good grip that they would be more likely to warp. I dunno!

Warped rotors are a fairly new phenomenon in newer cars. It used to be that rotors were so heavy and over designed that you could machine them smooth a few times before replacing them, and they used to be made of high quality steel. Now they are very thin, can't even be machined once and are made of junk.
You could try and ride the brakes slightly while accelerating. If there's just gunk on them that should do it. Otherwise, you're making a trip to the garage!
I'm making a trip to the garage on Thursday morning (what a fun way to use vacation time. NOT). Chris said it's probably nothing to worry about but "it should be looked at."

If that happens, would you please send me some of the left over magic dust for my brake noise!

We took our car in a year ago for new brakes. As soon as we left they started making a noise. Took the car back, supposedly it was ok, but they noticed some bluish color on something (rotors?).

The guy tells us everything is ok, not to worry about it that the brakes work fine.

Kept making the noise. Took it back again. No problem. Told not to worry about it again, and that the brakes had a years warranty on them.

We waited the entire year, took it back one more time a few days before the warranty expired.

This time, the guy says, "Someone has been riding the brakes." MAD. NO MAD as he!! is more like it. I told him, I drive that car, and I DO NOT ride the brakes. Where I live you drive for miles without needing your brakes, unless you spot a deer, and then it's highway milage. We only have 3 streetlights in town on the main road!

NOTHING was done. Just told, "Well, the brakes are fine. But, they're blue, and someone has been riding them." If my sister didn't work in the office of that place I would've created a BIGGER scene than I did that day!

GOOD LUCK on finding the cause and the solution. Please send me the magic dust, my brakes still make the same noise.
WHOOPS! I forgot to sign in. Send that dust to:
mouthypf
