UK puppy - with or without papers?

Hi

I posted this on the UK breeding topic and then thought that it actually looked like that discussion had finished so i had better start again!

We have a fabulous much loved two year old OES called Molly and plan to get another.

We have contacted someone listed on the Kennel Club website selling the puppies with papers or without papers (which are £200 less). What is the disadvantage of doing this, as obviously it's quite a different price!

I have asked to see the puppies with the dam - and we are going to do this (hopefully this week) - in fact the breeder has also said that Dad will be there too!

He seems perfectly reputable, but i'd be grateful if anyone could clarify re the papers.

Also whilst i'm at it - what are people's opinons on

a. us getting a boy (with Molly being a girl)
b. the age gap between them (sounds like i'm talking about kids!!)

Many thanks

It sounds wierd to me, maybe they have two seperate litters?

I have no idea why some would be able to have papers and others not?

Someone with more experience will comment, but I would not buy a puppy without papers. It's really important to get a dog from good lines (certified hip and eye results as an example) one reason being because if you buy from inferior stock, you are setting yourself up with huge vet bills further down the line.

There are lots of other reasons too.

Good luck in finding a puppy, very exciting time :D

Cassie.
Could be just the difference between show quality and pet quality.
In the US some less desireable breeders have (and probably still are) done this. It is just a money making scheme. They are pups from the same litter, they just are basically selling you the pup for one price and asking for even more money to get the papers.

I don't know about how the UK registration works, but in the US the breeder pays a fee to register the litter - regardless of the number of pups in the litter. Then you (and everyone else who gets a pup) get a paper to send in, paying your own seperate fee, to register the pup in your own name.
Thanks for your comments.

We decided to avoid this breeder. My husband thinks all the puppies should come with KC papers.

We have now reserved a very cute boy puppy....my husband wants to call him Dave!...actually he quite suits it.
Dave......I just love the name
Good choice. And the name Dave for a sheepdog sounds fun. :D
