Before I joined a dog forum - I thought that the only dogs for me were going to be a doxie or a chi... I was so dead set on getting either of those two dogs! After some encuragement - I started looking at other breeds and their characteristics - after hours of searching - I was a little flabbergasted - there were so many! I even did a petmatchmaker search - and there - and then I went down the list - nope! nope! All the dogs before hand were not what I was looking for in a breed... an then... at number 10 was an old english sheep dog... I looked the breed up... and the more I looked - the more I liked... soon I found that this dog was just perfect for my home! I am a very responsible pet owner who believes that any animal that I bring into this home deserves hours and hours of research on my part. I also believe that after you buy a pet - that it is a lifetime commitment and should never be taken lightly. I currently have a Himalayan cat that requires a lot of grooming and care - and I do it with love... even if he is a spoiled little brat! I give him a good brushing every single day - to make sure there are no mats. I am planning on purchasing another Himalayan in probably 3 or so months time. Pretty much I keep my animals as healthy as I can - and try to give them the best food I can. After researching the Old English Sheepdog's personality... I can hardly wait until we (my fiance and I) can get one. I hope I find out more and more about OES - and be able to find the right breeder for me. |

Welcome to the forum!
I congratulate you on your disciplined approach at finding just the right dog! One thing you may not have read about the OES is that coat care is quite time consuming if you plan on keeping your dog in a long coat. When I first adopted, I was advised that every inch of hair required 1 additional hour per week of grooming. A full coated OES will have about 12 inches of hair, so that meant a day and a half of brushing every week! At about 4 inches, we could not keep up with the brushing, as it seemed that the coat went from perfect to completely matted literally overnight. This happened to us twice, if memory serves. We decided to keep our guy in a puppy coat most of the year, and tried hard to time a longer coat for the New England winter. Good luck on your quest! |
Hello and welcome to the forum
I read your other post as well and it is nice to see that you have done so much research and know what you are wanting from a breeder. I did a year research on cats and dogs before we figured out even which breed we wanted and then it took almost another year to figure out who we wanted our pups from. Jack (16 mo) and Annabelle (13 mo) were well worth the wait. I am also owned by 4 Ragdolls as well. Who are all purrfect! LOL I wish you well in your search for a breeder, and your perfect pup. There is a lot of great advice here and we love stories and pictures here. I hope you stay around and keep us posted. Good luck, Stormi and co. |
Welcome! You will find as I did and do everyday, that the people on this forum are a HUGE help. Simply searching old posts and reading new ones provides a wealth of information and knowledge on being a "new" dog owner. Good luck with your search!
