What to do best when heavy matted?

Charlie is heavy matted to her skin and I dont have an appointment til 23. July. I know that if I cant help to demat her coat they will probably have to shave or cut her very very short which I wouldnt really want. I would love to keep her coat if I can!

I was always told to cut with a scissor between the matted hair to split it but want assurance if this is right. Sometimes I feel if I cant brush the matt out straight away I was cutting (Charlie will get in the mood it is too much for her and I have to stop!) it will fall of later totally!

What is the best advice??

If she has become heavily matted to her skin, do her a favor and just shave her down. Dematting a heavily matted dog is torture. :(
Thank you very much for your advise!

It seems it would be better for her to be shaven down! I dont want that she has to suffer!! I love her to bits! :hearts:

Will post pictures when she is done!
I would shave her too.
Think of it as fresh new hair to start her new and better life with you. :)
I would shave her too, hair grows.
I would shave her too... the hair grows back quickly, and it's is a long painful process to demat a dog who is matted heavily...
Awwww Charlie :hearts:

It must be better to shave her if it's going to be painful to get the matts out. If you have clippers you could do that yourself Monika :excited:

Whatever happens, we want pics of Charlie!! She is so beautiful- and would still be beautiful with short hair
Is she matted to the skin all over or just spots? Sometimes you can spot shave and camouflage if you want keep the hair.

Clyde had his collar accidentally left on while being boarded at the end of April and he was matted so tight, the groomer shaved around his neck and feathered everything around it. I had posted pictures and she really couldn't even tell. It sounds funny, but I was just mentioning to my husband that I think we ought to do this for him every summer. It keeps him cooler! We don't show so we only need to make him look good to the naked eye. No one's going over him to look for all the weird chops and haircuts!
She's not matted everywhere just some single places, which are mainly the legs, (nearly everywhere!) both sides of her body/tummy and underneath and her backside (bum!).

Her back on top and her face are ok!

Unfortunaley I do not have any clippers, I always send Ellie to the groomer cause she didnt liked brushing and grooming a lot and I'm worried even if I would buy some clippers that I cant really do it cause I dont know how to do it!!

And oh yeah I will post some pictures when she's done!!
Best wishes for charlie, it is better to start again as it would be too much for her to try and de-matt and it would end up making grooming an issue for her. Then you can start again and as it is growing she will enjoy being groomed.

You can just do it with scissors till you can see the groomer and then get them to evan it out with clippers. Use a wide tooth metal comb to help and scissor the area and then run the comb over that area to help loosen the felting at skin level.

Best wishes look forward to seeing a photo and of course some when she fluffs up again.
My groomer had me buy a product called 'The stuff ' she told me to spay it on and it makes the matt's come out so easy. :?:

Now, as I say that I brought it but never tried it cause It is just so much easier for me to keep my Furkids hair short or shaved.

Has anyone ever tried 'The stuff ' :?:

It's Summer. Shave her and watch how happy a sheepie can be naked in the summer. Just put sunblock on any really pink spots. :phew:

Love the Stuff. I use it in regular line grooming. It softens the coat a lot though so no good if you're showing but great for a super soft pet!

Honestly, I have yet to find a product that actually gets mats out any better than a comb and my fingers or good old prevention. I guess sometimes a good conditioner will help loosen a bit, but not enough that if I didn't have it around, I wouldn't run out and get it. Can you imagine what an incredible invention that would be? A spray that unknots/unmats on contact? Think of the money that person would make from us OES owners!
