Pet Insurance yes or no?

Hi all,

I just check up online for a pet insurance for Charlie and it's with Marks&Spencers, it is with no excess and pays vet fees up to £7000!

It would cost per year £185.05, I was told Petplan is around £40-£50 per month so it does sound cheep to me! My question now: shall I sign up for it or am I still better off starting a savings account for Charlie and pay £20 in per month for the next years and nothing will be lost!?!

Any help please???!!!

I don't know the "conversion" from $ to your money but I did hear an interesting "financial report" about pet insurance on our news recently. According to the report in MOST CASES you are better off taking the money you would spend on premiums and making a monthly deposit in an interest bearing account.

Of course, should you have a series of unexpected illness' or a costly accident you would be glad to have the insurance but what are the odds? Many genetic illness' and illness related to old age are excluded.

I considered it but decided to just start a "savings" account.
Hi Monika!

Try a website that get the cheapest quote for you. We had a look on www.moneysupermarket.com (just click on pet insurance when you get there) they will give you the best quotes for free and explain what you will be covered for. It's a free service so it's worth using and you can pick the insurance that suits you best.

Also I think www.confused.com do pet insurance quotes for free too.

Good luck!

Love to Charlie

There are alot of illnesses that are not covered on pet insurance, however what you do get is accidental insurance. So if Charlie decided to run off across a road and caused an accident you would be covered for damage to the cars and worst case the people involved.

I suppose it is a bit of a gamble, if you don't have it and you need to pay 5k for an op could you do it, but equally you may pay lots of premiums and never use it!!
i used sainsburys in the uk it was about0 13 pounds a months and that was after it got put up after claiming twice in one year

i paid 50 pounds excess but they paid it directly to the vet

some yu have to pay and then claim back

hope that helps

All insurance is a gamble. You take it out figuring you might need it... if you don't use it, you feel it's money wasted... if you don't buy it and something happens, you kick yourself for not having it

If you have a sheepie that ends up with problems, it's well worth the investment of having a good plan in place. The important thing to remember is you must get it effect before your dog is ever diagnosed for any condition or it will be specifically excluded from the policy.

Just read the fine print including what's covered and what's not covered so you can decide if it's right for you. It's been a good investment for us though only 4 out of 6 qualified.
Hi there,

I know I'm a little bit late to reply, but please check into your insurance carefully, don't just go with the cheapest. A lot of these cheaper sites only cover illnesses for the first year then it's down to you to pay the rest, and it becomes hard for you to find another company when an illness has already been diagnosed. We do pay that little more that the average, but we figured that he's only one and it by any chance he does pick anything up - which will effect him later - we now we are covered and not having to pay out ourselves.
