Well...it kept getting worse and worse, and started spread lower and into my back. I didn't know what side the appendix was on (this was the right side), so I looked it up on www.mayoclinic.com. Yep, it sounded exactly like what I was experiencing. At 7, I couldn't take it anymore, and woke Tony and asked him to take me to the hospital. (He was thrilled to be awakened by a panicing wife! NOT!) We went, and they poked me (OUCH!), drew blood, and finally administred morphine (thank goodness). They also set up an IV. They had me drink some stuff so they could do a contrast CT scan (all if this is new to me, I rarely get sick, and if I do, its a stupid little cold.) The morphine started working, and while I was laying I felt pretty darned good! I had to go to the washroom, and when they helped me up, I thought I was going to die! I had forgotten how much it hurt. Oh, yes...they also saved and tested my urine then. My blood test came back fine. No infection. So...they whisked me off to radiology. I felt great until I had to move...but, to be honest, it was much better than when I got there. Long story, a wee bit shorter...the CT scan was perfectly fine! However, they did see arthritis in my spine, which I guess is pretty normal at my age. And then......the urine test came back. Blood! They found blood! EEK! Apparently, I had passed a kidney stone! WHO KNEW? This was now about 4 hours later, I was doped up and only wanted to go home. They gave me another shot, prescriptions, a plastic bowl and strainer to make sure if I pass another stone, I'll find it...and sent me home. I've slept most of the afternoon. I am really....REALLY sore, but no longer in pain. Its pretty scary to realize we are human!!!! And not invinciable, like I always think I am. On my way to the hospital, I kept thinking...if I have surgery and have to stay, how can I get in touch with my pal at OES.org??? Thank goodness...it (sorta) worked out!!! |
|
Oh my, Deborah! I'm glad you are going to be okay. A kidney stone sounds quite painful. What a nice wife you are in not waking Tony up...I wouldn't have woken Steve up in a second.
Remember, if you ever need anything posted, have someone call me...or give you passwords to your daughter |
Wow. I am so glad you're ok, or at least feeling better! That's scary!
As for oes.org, you could always call someone you know from the forum (should we all have phone buddies on the forum?) . But I want to suggest that the finest hospitals should have wifi and some doctor ought to let you use his/her iPhone May your stones always be small and non-recurring. |
Well, Deb! All that pain and no baby to show for it! lol
So sorry that you had to go through that. It sounds just horrible! I hope you NEVER have to do that again. Get some rest, drink plenty of fluids and post hourly to OES.ORG....ok...I'm not a doctor but it sounds good! |
OMG how scary , glad it all worked its way out
(lol) I know not funny. Hope you get well soon and my prayers are with you. |
The stone must have been very small, which really angered Tony, since (even with insurance) it will cost us thousands!!!!! And...I can't even have it set in ring |
Kidney stones are reported to be even MORE painful than childbirth!! You have my sympathy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank GOD for morphine |
I'm so glad you passed it and hopefully that's the end of it!!! Drink lots of water and hope you get lots of rest! I've heard so many horror stories regarding stones that I feel for anyone who has one! I always think of the board too when things happen. |
Oh my gosh Deb!
Yikes.....I cant believe you didnt wake up your husband....I'd have been demanding all kinds of sympathy and babying! Im glad your doing better. So funny for you to think of the forum at a time like that...I agree with Ron....hospitals need to have wifi! |
OMG, How awful Deb!
Hope you are feeling better very soon!! |
I am just not sure why you want to strain your pee. Will you be starting a collection. If so willit be for public display? Glad you did not have to have surgery. |
Ouch, I'm so sorry you went through that and hopefully no more... I've heard kidney stones are the most painful thing to have to endure... |
OMG Deb...I am so sorry to hear you had to go through this. I hope you feel better soon and the one stone you passed was all there was. Take care of yourself. |

I have to strain for 2 days, as I'm still uncomfortable (not in pain though). After 2 days, everything should be back to normal, or I'll find another stone, in which case, I guess they check this out further. I've decided, if I do "catch" a stone, it will go on traveling exhibit with the new Queen Mummy that was discovered (JK!) |
Sure! If it's a strain to go, you should at least return the favor.
How small a sieve do you need to use? Are we talking chain link fence or cheesecloth? Maybe someone in your family has to run around behind you with a long handled pot...? Oh Ginny..... Is this catch and release? Details, woman. Details! Ohhhh how I could go on! |
Oy Ron! Only you! It looks like a funnel, with a very fine mesh at the bottom of the narrow part. I do not "go" into that. I have to put a plastic thingie in pot and catch my pee, and then pour it through the funnel/strainer. Oy.....I'm at work and did not bring it. But I'll only be here for a couple hours and then I'm goin' home. (I think this conversation has just turned gross...sorry!) |
i got the pot ready |
Kidney stones are horrible. I prayed for death when I experienced one, but drugs are our friend. The nurse told me kidney stones hurt worse than labor. I'm glad yours passed and fingers crossed that you (and I) never have another one! |
OK, Thanks! debcram wrote: Oy.....I'm at work and did not bring it. But I'll only be here for a couple hours and then I'm goin' home. I will NOT mention water dripping into a pan in the sink, waves crashing on the shoreline, UTIs or ultrasounds then.

OUCH!!
That definitely does not sound like something you want to repeat. Hope you're feeling better in no time. |
There are different types of stones, so if you make a habit of doing this the doctor will be able to modify your diet.
Somehow I think when Tony passes a kidney stone (or has a gall bladder attack) he won't think the money too excessive. s. |
Wow Deb! Glad you are okay and hugs from me.
You know this sounds exactly like what happened to someone I know recently. They live out in the country and didn't seek medical help..I think I'll mention kidney stones to them. You may have helped another person through your post. Marianne and the boys |
Oh Marianne! That would (almost) make it all worthwhile! Did I ever mention Jim Henson (Father of the Muppets) saved my life? I never met him, but as sure as I am sitting here, he did. Many years ago I got really sick. I thought it was a bad chest cold. After a couple days, it went away, and I was better. About 10 days later, I got so sick, I was dilerious. I was running a fever of 103, and actually out of my mind. Every part of me hurt. A few days before that Jim Hensen died (poor Kermit) and People Magazine ran an article about the type of pnemonia (sp?) he had. With my fever, I couldn't read, my eyes hurt too much. So my friend, Nancie came over to keep me company, and read it to me. It was exactly what I had!!! I made a Doctor's appointment, which I would not have made without knowing what had happened to Jim. My pnemonia had gone into my lungs (pluracy) and I was really sick. The Doc got me meds immediately, and had an inhalation therapist come to my home once a day for about 10 days. It took me a month to fully recover, but I did. And bless Jim Hensen's heart, had I not read his story, I never would have gone to the doc and gotten treatment, and I, too, probably would have died. So....hopefully, Marianne, this saga of mine will help your friend! |
Poor Deb! I hope you're feeling better! |
Poor Deb - ow, ow, ow!! You certainly are a thoughtful wife, not waking Tony up. I would have Dale up in a HEARTBEAT!! I hope you're feeling better today, and just remember to drink lots of fluids!! |

debcram wrote: (I think this conversation has just turned gross...sorry!) No, this is when it turned gross! debcram wrote: I let Tony sleep, thinking it was poopie cramp and would pass.
Good thing you're feeling better now though! |
