How long is the gestation period? I heard 63ish days, is that the same for all breeds? Also, how many pups are there usually in a litter? Does it vary alot? Thank you! |

According to the special the "In the Womb" tv show on National Geographic, the gestation time for dogs is about 9 weeks, so 63 days is right online with that.
The way eggs are fertilized in dogs is really cool and much different from humans. The sperm latches on to the eggs and hangs out for a few days and then, whichever ones managed to hang on until the egg is ready become puppies. The tv show explained it better than me. |
WOW Jill, you know a lot about the Birds and the Bees.
Litter size depends on a lot a factors, like the age of the bitch when mated, older bitches usually have smaller litters. Also family history too, if mom has had a large litter usually a daughter will too. Litter sizes do vary alot from maybe just one or two in a litter to heaps. No one can tell for sure till they pop out, unless they have an x-ray done in the last week of pregnancy to count exactly how many in there. I've seen bitches absolutely huge and only 1-3 born, you would of thought they were carrying a dozen in there, then late last year been to a whelping and the bitch was small and looked like not many in there and she ended up whelping 10. So size of a bitches tummy in pregnancy is not a guide either. You just wait & see what Mother Nature has install as to how many are tucked up in there. |
