Questions--buying from a breeder--1st time-PLEASE Help

Hello.

My name is Ann and I am interested in getting a sheepie from a breeder, but I have some questions I was hoping someone on this site could help me with.

I am emailing a breeder who is asking me to send a nonrefundable $400.00 for a puppy( the total cost is $1800.00)--puppies are due next week. Here are my questions.

Do all breeders want deposits?
If he decides not to sell me a puppy, do I get my money back?
How many people do breeders accept deposits from? I mean if they only have 4 pups, do they accept deposits from 12 people? That doesn't seem right, does it???
If I put a deposit on a pup, am I guarenteed a puppy?
If this breeder doesn't pick me, does he keep the deposit and am I at the "top of the list" for the next litter? If this happens, I guess my only options are either wait the 3 years (he said he breeds every 3 years) or forfeit my deposit.

And finally what exactly is coownership?????
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for any information you can provide me.....

I would say pretty much all breeders want deposits. Usually, it is half of the puppy price. If they decide to not sell you a puppy, or if something happens and there are no puppies available, then they should return your money. When you send your deposit in, you should find out how many other deposits they've received first, so you know where you are in line. Yes, if they accept deposits from 10 people and you're the 10th deposit and they have 7 puppies, you won't be getting a puppy. The breeder should return your deposit, and give you the option of buying a puppy from another breeder, if they've over sold the litter.

Co-ownership is pretty standard with most ethical breeders only if you want full registration with your puppy. If you want limited registration then usually they will put you down as single owner. Co-ownership is really a safeguard for a breeder to keep tabs on their bloodline. If for some reason you decided to just breed the dog on your own, you would never be able to register the litter without their consent. If you plan on showing the dog, most breeders will take their name off as a co-owner once you finish a dog (get its championship). It does not mean that they will just knock on your door and take your dog if you are worried about that, unless there is some kind of neglect or something.

Hope this answers your questions. What you are mentioning to me sounds like standard operating procedure for all of the breeders on the OES of America referral list.
I'd give the breeder a call and discuss it over the phone with them, too. I think sometimes just hearing a human voice explaining things to you can make you feel better. E-mail can be pretty non-feeling and technical and you don't get the immediate answers to questions that pop up that you'd like.
If you are able to visit the breeder and get clarifications all the better. The breeder should explain the deposit arrangement clearly to you as well as the co-ownership agreement and any guarantees. When I got Barney, I drove out there just to look at the puppies (Boy was that a mistake; once there I was hooked). I had read the recommendation provided by the Old English Sheepdog Club of America and came armed with all the questions. The breeder likewise asked me a lot of questions to insure I could give the pup a good home. We spent about 2 hours together; ultimately leaving her a deposit and since I was the first deposit I had the pick of the litter. I had seen the pups on her web site and already knew which one I wanted. From then on the pup was named Barney and the breeder used that name with him until I was able to pick him up. She wouldn't let him go until he was 8 weeks old.
first off where are you? USA the name of the breeder? something some of us could help you find out. I am a co-owner of a pup.
okay, after having typed a long response for my computer to shut down, i will try to answer you again............ :?

Please see this response to you from Ali; It was so good it deserved its own topic.
How do you look for a new puppy? What to ask the breeder?
Wow... What a great post!

Thanks Ali!
My pleasure Ron. i think we have gotten away from puppy buyers e knowing why we charge what we do and how we come to some of our conclusions on how we do things.'

I may be raked over the coals for some of why..what i wrote by other breeders, but that is why i wrote this waa all MY Philosophy.

If people keep my answers in mind when they speak to different breeders, i hope i will have made getting a puppy from a breeder not seem so secrative and mystical............ We dont pull them out of a hat and cannot guarantee blue eyes or 1 left eye patch etc.

And as i said, I will treat them as I would want to be treated. I remember buying my first OES and my first dogs sight unseen and my first fantastic showdog (Delilah) and breeding my first litter...........

these should be wonderful memorable events.
