I put both of my dogs on adult food at the age of one year. |
I think we switched Barney at about 10 months. |
Check with your vet or your breeder to see what they recommend. Every dog is different. I know some people on here have switched from anywhere from 6 months to over a year. I think Clyde was 10 months or so. Whatever Barney did-- they copy off of each other. |
My vet recommends switching to adult food around 6-8 months of age. He recognizes that this is earlier than conventional practice but he feels that puppy food is actually too high in protein and that causes the bones to grow at a faster rate than the muscles which can create problems.
If you look at the protein content of puppy food you will see it's around 26% (I think that is what I remember). My Vet recommends a good quality (without cereal or meal as the main ingredient) that is around 21%. I would discuss it with your Vet, he knows your dog and his developement the best. |
Barkley switched over at about 11 months, when he stopped eating all of his allotment of puppy food, which was right around the time (1 year, or when he starts to get fat, whichever comes first) that the breeder recommended.
Check with your breeder. He/She should know what's best for the particular lines/background you're dealing with. If your breeder isn't available/doesn't know, then check with your vet. |
