Jean always feed a Raw Bone, cooked bones can splinter.
I use a big beef marrow bone, takes them forever with hours and hours of chewing. I also put old socks on there front legs when chewing a raw bone, it helps with the mess and how they grab and hold the bone to chew. Then it is just a matter of a face wipe after. |
thanks Lisa I'm off to the butcher shop tomorrow am |
I buy the prepared knuckle and shank bones. I usually avoid the basted (brown) ones. Too messy. Mine have some that are several years old and they still get chewed on by someone every single day. |
thanks Dawn , would you get these at the pet store ?

Jean just make sure the bones are a decent size, make sure there not too small to be swallowed whole.
Raw Lamb Shank bones are great too. |
thanks Lisa, I'll see what the butcher has and the bigger the better |
Jean, At Pet Valu they have big bones that have been sterilized. I get mine these, they love them. I had gotten ones from the butcher but it just made a mess all over their fur and it gave them diahhrea. I think my dogs can't tolerate beef.
They also have them at Pet Supply House(in Guelph)....they are cheaper than from Pet Valu and they will ship them to you. Here is the link https://www.businessvision.net/edge/Mai ... geNumber=1 My dogs just love these bones. And because I have several there are never any fights for them. |
thanks Kim and we have a Pet Value here in town so what kind and size do you think I should get? |
Big raw bones are excellent for chewing. |
Yes, I get them at our local store - Pet Expo. The nice big ones are best. They are the sterilized or processed ones - made especially for dogs to chew. I get either a shank or knuckle bone. They can be kind of spendy, but they are worth it. |
Jean, I just get the largest sizes I can find. Most of the ones I have are about 8 inches in length and over 2 inches in diameter. They last forever and they are clean. In the past I had gotten marrow bones from the grocery, but not only did they not agree with Merlin's stomach, but one got stuck in Avalon's mouth between her teeth above her tongue Avalon used to be a big chewer.....she seems to have outgrown it now. Occasionally the big dogs will find one and chew on it, but its mainly Scarlet who uses them now. |
We give raw bones too. We usually give them new ones about once a week. Keep them in the freezer and they make a nice meat popsicle. |
thanks for all the help Everyone , had to go to a plaza to get new eye drops for hubby re his cataract surgery Dutch decided she wanted some drops also and bit the top off the plastic bottle before I could get to her, so while there went into Pet Value and picked up a BIG beef bone , next time I will get a raw one and see which one she and I prefer
thanks again |
Naughty Dutch!!
I can just see her doing it though, such a curious girl. |
Pip loves his marrow bones, but he goes through them in about a day. We also get the gigantic smoked beef nones, and those can keep him occupied (he's a very vigorous chewer) for at least a week,s ometime two. A good bone or treat stuffed toy is the best occupation for my boy, who'll chew on anything, just so he has something to chew on while we're at work. Better a bone, then my latest novel! |
I go to Sam's Club and get T-Bones. They cost about a dollar.
My dogs love them. Here's a pic... [/img] |
