| There really is no "best food". The best food for a dog is the one they like and thrive on. There are many good quality foods out there and each dog has specific needs. Sometimes you just have to pick one and go with your gut.

I lost my OES due to the dog food recall. I am currently waiting for my new puppy...4 more weeks 
I am feeding my old lady Standard Poodle (10+) Canidae dry only. It doesn't have any glutens or vitamin K supplements. She is finally eating it dry. I hope to put the pup on it when he is old enough, but don't know how an OES will take to that food. I was feeding Nutro for sensitive stomaches. I can honestly say I will never buy Nutro, or feed canned again. It can take a while to find the right food for an OES. |
| I understand that every dog is different...my wife and I don't like everything the other likes either.
I just wanted to know what has worked for others and if there were any recommendations. Max seems to like the Purina One but that is all he has every ate so I don't know if he would do better on another or not...yet I guess. What is the difference between Purina One and the Purina Pro Plan and the Purina Beneful? Which is better ingredients? |
| The important thing is to read the ingredients. You want REAL food, salmon, chicken , beef lamb etc. NOT meat byproducts and cereal. If cereal is listed as the main ingredient it's all filler and not nutrition. |
| We are happy with the Artemis holistic brand Fresh Mix dog food.
www.artemispetfood.com We found that in Bogart's case, Canidae food was too rich for him. Yet many members here have good experience with it. Seems like each OES has to find the food that is right for him. PS--After the recall, my mother's friend lost her dog to tainted food. It was Purina Beneful. The stores stocked the new dog food, and company did not catch up to the fact those stock numbers should have been recalled. This could happen to any dog food company, so just keep track of the consumer alerts. Hugs to Max! |

| my derby had the runs for 6 months i think it was tainted food i have him now on bill jac or a real good one is wellness but he doesn't like it but rreal healthy all natural |
| I have mine on a rotation. The three I like now are: Canidae, Nutro Max Large breed and Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul.
All of mine like them and do well on them. All I add is yogurt. |
| We used Flint River Ranch food (you order it right to your door) for a bit. Now we feed a raw food diet - it has been wonderful for us. |
| The only food I had trouble with is Purina. It gave my sheepdogs gas from the soy meal. That was years ago. They were healthy enough, just hard to live with.
I tried Iams and Eukanuba, but my guys didn't care for it at all. Now I feed a mix: Nutro Ultra, Nutro Large Breed Senior, Solid Gold. |
