Sensitive question!

I'm thinking of getting an OES as my next dog (it's been a year since I lost me Weimaraner) I was just wondering with the long hair around their rear end are they prone to cling ons?

Welcome to the Forum from Barney & Maggie in St. Louis.

When you groom a Sheepie the area around the anus is trimmed to about an inch in length. The only time mine have "clingons" is if they have really loose stools.
DINGLEBERRIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ya gotta keep the tush clipped or you are in BIG trouble
We bought a Costco-sized case of baby-wipes so that anytime the stool is soft we can clean him up to prevent build-up.... and also to prevent a stain on the carpet when he sits. 8O
Both Sheepdogs and real sheep get them. The key is to keep the hair (or wool!) trimmed. Then, no problems. :D
Dingleberries? Any long hair breed is prone to them. Zip zip with a clipper and the problem is solved. If you keep them in long or show coat you have to be a bit more creative in clipping.
As you can see, to sheepdog people, this is not a sensitive question    We joke about it.
Sheepdog people may be the only folks around who can pick off dingleberries barehanded without even a pause!!!
  That's Right!!
sometimes I pick them off w/o thinking in front of company :D
It is like second nature to sheepie owners :D 8O
I forgot to log in yesterday when I posted this! Thanks for all your replies. I have found them both informative and amusing! :)

Yea, we have ALOT of DONKEYS around here
Thanks for the great welcome!

You all seem really nice and your pictures are gorgeous!

I can't wait to get a new best friend :)
I pick off the dingleberries barehanded too...hubby finds it just gross (trust me, I've touched worse). A big box of wipes does come in very handy. You will also limit the dingleberries by feeding good quality food.

Welcome to the forum!
I keep mine clipped fairly close in that area. As short as I can get it without actually shaving. Then I do a little "poop shute" between their back legs, up in the higher area....

But the little "Klingons" that develope are really nothing to make a deal of at all. No worse than the eye guck.
I have more of a problem in that department with my tailed dogs than my tailless one.

Ewww. Don't EVEN get me started on eye guck (she says while shuddering over here!). Ick.
WHAT !! Eye gunk is good. All my dogs love to eat their salty tears.
8O If it ain't one end, it's the other :?

Ummmmm :o ewwwwwwww     I have more problems with my kats having dingleberries ewwwwwww Not yet with the dogs
This is a subject I have dealt with!!! Usually they have diarrhea at ringsid. We always carry a spray bottle with self rinse, paper towels, all importang corn starch and the propylactive Flagyl. This is the worst case scenario. If this happens at home - pop them in the tub and just wash the butt - they will be clean and you can just use your hand held dryter - then Flagyl 2x a day till it is cleared up. OES have tender stomachs - one episode of diarrhea will cure you from feeding them anything adnormal. If your dog is prone to this during car trips, stress, etc. just give the Flagyl and move on - it is the wonder drug - never travel without it. Fast way is paper towels, self rinse, corn starch which you comb out and, of course, Flagyl...and no, I do not work for Flagyl,Inc.
BTW, it has taken me this entire day to size this one picture so it would work as my avatar- if anyone needs a Flagyl right now it is I.....
lol.....
that is funny. I am at work (RN in a hospital ) and I could send you some!!
RN's and sheepies must be the perfect match!!!! :D:D
Dawn - where do you live and work?? I worked in hospitals for years - back in the day when they were experimenting with Primary Nursing - I was in charge of 35 unit secretaries....primary nursing didn't last long ...doctors freaked when they couldn't talk to a "head RN" -and worked for my late husband for many years - he was a medical malp attorney in Chicago...
I am in Mankato MN - south of Mpls/St. Paul. I work 12 hr night shifts. It is my weekend right now. We did primary nursing too. It worked ok with our group of ortho docs, but was not good for us part timers. We never got any consistancy - just filled schedule gaps around the full time staff.

Because I like variety, I also do pediatric homecare and substitute school nursing. :D
What is Flagyl? and where do you get it? Bella loves to go to the mountains but the trip can upset her stomach to the point that it takes a day or two after we get back for it to settle down. That sounds like it might help.
The generic name for Flagyl is metronidazole, and it is an antibiotic used for anaerobic bacteria in the digestive system, such as giardia. My vet told me that it helps maintain the proper balance of flora as well.

And it is Oscar's constant companion. :D He is on a maintenance dose daily to help control his IBD.

Laurie and Oscar (addicted to metronidazole......)
Also - when we had pups with diarrhea the vet gave us Benebac (for rabbits and also dogs, etc.) which worked in the same way. Wonderful stuff...
