TPLO-Should I subject my 8 year old dog to this operation?

Does anyone have any comments or information on the procedure TPLO? We have been told our 8 year old english sheepdog is a candidate for this. I am hesitant on such an invasive surgery. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry that you are faced with this decision! I'm sure that several people will be able to weigh in and discuss this with you.

I'm glad you found us.
Thank you for the welcome. My 8 year old OES tore his cranial cruciate ligament last week and will be undergoing surgery. We were given the choice between 2 different types of repair. One is the typical surgery and the other is the newer TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy)
Does anyone have any advice as to which one is better?
The TPLO.. my friend's 7 year old Chesepeke Bay Retreiver just had it preformed on both knees (not at once.. 8 weeks apart) and you would never know.. she is BETTER than ever.

I will get her sign on and see if she can answer your questions.

I had it done on one dog, it looks awful, but dogs rebound far more quickly than humans. The only way to cure ACL and the other ligament problems is with TPLO. Yes, it is expensive, but if you dog is healthy then there should be no problem. Is 8 too old? Average life span of sheepies is around 12.....your call.

I wish I had to funds to have done and currently do more dogs here. My rescue dogs are here and not in new homes, due in part, to their lousy structure. How cruel to get someone a dog and then have them put thousands into a TPLO.
my mom had the sugery for her Bischon...Ipsy after about 2 weeks was as bouncy as ever.....she does still tend to get a little stiff, but all in all my mom said the surgery was worth it!!
Has anyone had the regular ACL repair done instead of the TPLO?
Just want to wish you all the success with whatever surgery you choose there. The recovery after is the most stringent, but being that your baby is only 8 still a good age for surgery to repair the cruciate and the after care treatment and diligance needed there to get your baby up and around again. 8 is not too old for this type of surgical repair & the care after.

I have a sheepie over 12 years with damage (Partial tear) to the cruciate and no options there for surgery due to the age factor and the recovery after. We are coping with that at the moment.

So read up on what you can on the two different options there and be advised by the consulting vet as to what might be the best option for your baby.

Thinking of you all and looking forward to hearing that all went well.

My Bernese Mountain Dog who is 5 now had his CCL repaired back when he was 18 months old the traditional way. Back then you didn't have the option, I wish we had, I would of went for the TPLO. Dudley (my Berner), still has problems with his leg, he is stiff getting up and down sometimes, I know exactly how much exercise he can tolerate before he gets sore. We manage his stiffness with Bufferin, Glousimine and Condriten on his food. I also keep him slightly underweight so that it is easier on his legs and joint.

There is no comparison between my Dudley who had the ACL repair and my friends who had the TPLO on her Chesapeake (both knees).. the Chessie's legs are better than ever, she goes like she is a puppy again.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Yes, to regular ACL and it tore out almost immediately. It depends on the dog size and the cause of the ACL tear. If the dog is structually sound and it was a freak occurance, then regular ACL might be enough. However, if the dog's femur is twisted (does your dog's rear feet point out instead of straight ahead?) that's one indication any ACL repair, even with an artifical substance, will tear again.

Harry's one ACL is gone, his right rear cants about 50 degrees from normal, he uses the leg only for stability. He needs a TPLO on both rear legs.....it won't happen. He's such a sweet dog......it makes me sad
We decided to go with the regular cruciate repair and he is scheduled for July 17. Wish Pooh-Bear luck!
Good luck Pooh Bear, please be sure to keep us posted!
Good Luck Pooh! If you are structurally sound, this should work just fine. A couple of weeks of down time, help from your uprights on getting outside for necessary trips, some funny tasting pills that go down well with butter or cream cheese.....and you'll be back to your old tricks.
