Peeing while eating dinner

So in the last week or so my husband decided he wanted to start desensitizing Barney from bumps or being touched while he eats. He's usually pretty good with me (letting me pat him, letting me take his food bowl away--although I have to announce I'm doing it). But my husband wants to make sure that if we ever have children (Or have our friends' kids over) that Barney will be fine with them around his food.

So he started with petting him and grabbing at his food and Barney didn't like it, so he growled maybe once, but after that he squirts some pee. And now he does it to me too, when he used to let me pet him.

What should we do? I'm afraid my husband has given Barney yet another neuroses!

steph...do you sit on the floor with him while he is eating? I do that with panda sometimes...right next to her food bowl...stick my finger in the bowl and kinda swirl the food around...maybe pick up a few kibbles and let him eat it out of your hand...then slowly work on touching him...he has to know the food is yours...

regarding the peeing thing....im glad sometimes that i have a girl...lol.....
He is confused, adn giving mixed signals. His reousrce-guarding is causing guard his food, automatcially, because at this point it is natureal to him and he cannot help himself. Then is submisively urintates, to let you know that he is not a threat, and is showing you submissive behavior....to compensate.

You need to start counter-conditioning him. Make him think that people by his bowl means good things. Instead of taking his food away, drop something good into his bowl when you walk by. Do this for a few days, just a drop of something he REALLY likes, so he will look forward to you coming by. Thne you can drop it in and linger your hand in his bowl for a few seconds, before removing yourself. Always leave a small goodie behind. Do this for a few days and then you can start putting your hand in with a treat whne his bowl in empty. With a bit of that you can start picking his empty bowl up, putting a treat in it, and giving it back. etc. etc

What you are trying to do is change his state of mind from being defensive and protective of his bowl, to being happy that you com eby his food, and gald to see you take his bowl away..

Good luck.

I don't think it has anything to do with that. I think it could be a form of submissive peeing. He's getting all riled up that his food is threatened and then SQUIRT. I don't think it's on purpose. I don't know. Let's wait for a pee expert to chime in.
Send you husband to his crate. Wrong idea. Now you have to undo the damage before your boy actually lashes out to defend his food.

I like all the above ideas.
