If oes.org was to offer webspace for sale would anyone be interested? Also, what features would be required? I was thinking in outline about it... Quote: You would get a name, say "fido.oes.org" or "dilbert.oes.org"
You would get an amount of disk space (maybe 40 or 50 MB) You would get an allotment of bandwidth (maybe 1 or 2 GB) You would get access to the space via FTP (similar to the anonymous picture upload, but with password protection and more abilities) You would get an email address at oes.org (say fido @ oes.org) You would pay a very small price per year, maybe $15 or $20 depending on number of people who were interested. Ability to hotlink (or protection against hot-linking) as you want. That kind of mini-hosting package usually goes for about $36-$60 per year, but would include a little more control than I'd be able to offer at this price. If you need a bigger account, we can talk, or I can help arrange a full power hosting account with/for you. There are other services that can be offered as well, such as your own domain name (say www.fidosheepie.com) (somewhere around $15 per year, $20 one-time setup fee) mysql databases, additional email addresses, etc., etc. I can be flexible. Your site doesn't HAVE to be about sheepdogs... but of course there can be no "Adult" or illegal content. Anyway, this isn't a done deal by any means, I'm wide open to suggestions. In the meantime if you need some webspace before I finalize what may or may not go into such a public offer, drop me a line and we'll work something out! |

Ron, I like the idea and the (possible) price sounds very reasonable (I've just forked over $350 for one particular domain name- ouch!).
I, for one, would be more than happy to pay for additional features. Just one suggestion, though- any chance of a Chatroom? I always thought it'd be nice to chit-chat with other members. I knew we do this in discussions but sometimes it's annoying when a topic moves away from it's subject. If you were to charge a membership fee that covered additional features, maybe checking out somewhere like http://www.pulpchat.com would be an idea. Just my €0.02 (yes, we use cents over here too!) |
i have no idea how to do a web page nor do I understand most of your post very computer illiterate. but i do understand chatroom. WE NEED ONE.
i would be soo much fun cher |
Yes Yes YEs!!!!! Sold! |
Which Which Which? |
I don't know which... I'm not really sure what I would need. But if you could host my website, (It would be nice if I could just move my site over without having to re do it all) I would also like to create my own forum similar to this one but for cat lovers, and link it to my site as well. I've already downloaded all the phpbb2 stuff, but as of yet have no host for it and really don't have a clue where to begin. (I'm a fast learner though and it looks like fairly simple programming)
And as I mentioned before, I want to create an oes genetic database and need a host for that too. |
Being able to use phpbb2 requires a mySQL database, and command-line access to update the software and do certain things, like when you need to update the software. I can provide a MySQL database, but the command-line access might require some workarounds.
When you're feeling up to it, drop me a line and we'll figure it out. In the meantime, take care! I'm glad you think it looks like easy programming! You might have a future in IT! |
I would be interested in web space. Mine is up in November. I already have a new domain name. Paid like $9 for it (cmyfiles.com). Have a great openning page for it too; but somehow I directed the domain to the wrong page.
Let me know what you come up with. Abbi's pages and my Troop's pages are looking for a new server. |
Hi Ron,
We would be interested in the webspace and the domain name. I want to get a website set up for my cattery, and I would assume later on for the dogs. Keep us informed. THanks, Stormi and co. |
Seeing how my last server just dropped my pages with no notice, I am interested in a more reliable server.
At present I am with peoplehost.com. did not get a lot of space, but I really don't need a lot. Would like to know whoever I go with isn't going to just turn my site off with no notice or anything. Still learning the ends and outs of web mastering, sigh. |
I am veeeerrrryyyy reliable! |
i think most people would find that extremely reasonable, and it'd probably be more space and traffic allotment than most folks on here would need, at a great price.
Good idea! |
I know you (Ron) are reliable.
The price sounds great. Right now I am paying almost $4 for 26 megs of space, e-mail, 1 G bandwith. I bought my own domain name for $9/yr. So I am paying About $57 a year for what you are offering ... and I know you would never cause my photos to go to red x"s ( ) like Yahoo did the other week. No notice, just yanked my whole site. OOOps they said. It will take 72 hours to correct they said, among other stuff. So I am moving, slowly, to people host. They have a lot of programs bundled with their web space. As Ron knows I just know HTML, not how to fool with all these wysiwyg programs and their address parameters and such. Give me FTP access and I am happy. (Which is offered even at peoplehost.com). Their C-panel interface is pretty nifty, but ... maybe a bit much for an attention deficit person ... like yours truly. I have been playing with their Guest Book and forum for the past few days. Wow, you can really spend the time messing with these things. Have you thought about how you would handle us ... use sub-domains I would suppose? That's what it looks like in your example. So basically you would allow us a sub-domain with say 30 -40 megs of (photo) space and permission to upload and redirect our e-mail? Or would the e-mail account share that space? I am a bit naive about how it all works .... but looking at the site I have now I am amazed. I can go to this one area and read over my error logs ... quite extensive as I tried to launch my site from the cgi-bin instead of the public_html area . Then I made a dippy syntax error on my first 2 pages. I do stupid things like that lately. I have just learned about permisions and why indexes are so important. I read about it before, but somehow when you make the mistakes you actually "know" what they were talking about. For a few days you could have gone and saw all my pictures and stuff by typing in my domain name. Oh well, I am off to finish errands .... one of which, find some in-depth computer classes on running web sites and networking. I sort of got involved in this extended networking LAN/WAN server project for the scouts and I really only know how to get into trouble. It's for a good cause, so I will get help and figure it all out- eventually. Later. |
So when is this official Ron? How will we go about paying you? And how many pages would I be allowed to put up? How many sites could I build? Will you have programs available and accessable to build sites and pages? |
Ahhhh you're asking the tough questions! This answer will be a bit on the technical side...
I won't be offering any kind of a professional package like that... just simple web space, bandwidth, ftp access and an email address @oes.org. If you need all the bells and whistles, you're probably better off with an organization designed to provide hosting and hosting services! Yes, If you wanted a name such as http://tailwaggersheepies.oes.org I'd use subdomains. If you wanted your own domain such as http://www.tailwaggersheepies.com then I'd use multihosting in combination with subdomains. My account has CPanel controls as well, so you're likely familiar with exactly what I have. I host with JaguarPC LTD, and they are a very professional outfit, and I've been very pleased after having a lot of very bad experiences. I've been so pleased with them that I've become comfortable in recommending them now, and they are even using a "testimonial" of mine on their homepage sometimes! Here's a link to JaguarPC's home page and their hosting plans So let me know if your interested... drop me a more private note... I'm very flexible and we can work out whatever detail you (or anybody) needs in a mini-webspace deal like this! |
Quote: More time rescuing oes. Cool quote. I was just thinking about placing Abbi's photos on your space and linking to my web site for now. It wouldn't be much. Guess I will PM you. |
My web site could do a chat ....so I guess yours could handle one also.
How hard is a chat board to run? Does it need more bandwidth? I seem to remember you mentioning an aweful lot of available bandwidth at this site. So how much would we have to pay to have a chat right here? Like a users fee, you would have to set it up. Would that be possible? Would you need moderators and such, or can chats self-moderate successfully? |
Sorry I missed your question -- you must have posted while I was visiting and I missed it as a new post. That happens surprisingly frequently to me.
Chat programs that I have looked at so far are a pain in the backside... I would have to moderate user lists in two places. I want a chat board that is integrated with this forum so that if you're logged into the forum, you're logged into the chat and vice-versa. Some types of chats are banned by the web server provider, due to high overhead, so I have to be careful with what I use. We have 45GB of bandwidth available here -- and we're using about 10 per month now. There are two other issues: 1) Timing. I could be very wrong, but I think that the vast majority of the time the chat would be empty. 2) (and probably most important) I'd hate to see good information disappear forever because it was said in a chat instead of posted. If we allow "chats" to go on via postings, the infor stays around for others to see, and to join in. In a chat the stuff disappears. I will look into it again, and see if anything new has shown up that will integrate with this forum. But for the meantime, I recommend Yahoo Messenger |
