What the heck is going on?????? I don't know but I'm sick of them. I'm getting carpel tunnel from hitting the delete button........... |
I have a main hotmail account that I only give to friends, and that has yet to receive 1 piece of spam mail. I've had it for about 8 years!
Anything I sign up for goes to my fake/junk email account. These other accounts I have, somewhere down the line I entered it in for a sweepstake, joining a forum, a company, etc... and they get spam. So, you could always create a new account just for real mail? |
I am getting a lot of spam too.
But now you can add phone solicitors to that list too! I just received a call - and yes we are on the "do not call list" - from a company my bank hired to call and sell credit reports to their customers. Oh they are free for the first 30 days. But when the woman called she said "there is nothing wrong with your accounts at Bank *******". I thought she said "there is something wrong with your accounts at Bank ******". Once we clarified that, I inquired as to why they were calling and then nicely said "I am not interested but thank you for calling". THAT darn woman tried to continue to talk so I very nicely HUNG UP the phone. I did not slam it down - aren't you proud of me? But I forgot to ask them to add me to their Do Not Call List. Charities are bad about calling too. I am going to stop answering my phone. Anyone I want to call me has my cell phone number anyway. Sorry Deb - I am not trying to hijack your thread just adding to the complaint. |
In the last two weeks the "foreign offers" have increased 100 fold. Regular spam still goes into my bulk folder but somehow these "foreign officer" (you have won a lottery etc) are getting through. It's very annoying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've had my email addy for over 10 years without this happening. I am careful about where I use my address and have another email address I use for "junk" (signing up for offers or ordering on line etc). So it makes me wonder if security has been compromised on a site I use regularly |

Ditto... I'm getting all the same ones, and it has increased dramatically. I have many email addresses, and I found it strange that none of my hotmail addy's, gmail, or yahoo that I actually use specifically to sign up for stuff in case of spam are getting hit with it. |
Could it be from this forum? No one else I know other than forum members are getting this spam. My other email addy's are not getting this spam...I think the common denominator might be this forum. |
I really don't think so. The Today show covered this last week. This is an email (type of email - lottery, etc) that everyone is getting. The only thing that boggles my mind is seeing people who actually think they won the lottery in Africa. |
Kim, I was wondering the exact same thing. I have NEVER gotten spam until a few weeks ago, when Deborah mentioned it here on the forum. I find it very odd as well.......

I wondered that myself when we started talking about it a ocuple weeks ago. Since like Stacey my other addy is not getting hit. |
The show also talked about how for awhile... email companies were getting it under control, but those sending these emails have learned to get past those filters and such.... |
More and more foreign lotteries every day, dead people that have left me their money, or dead people that need me to launder money.... and I won a car today.
I am so sick of this garbage!!! |
My yahoo email is linked here. I rarely had trouble with spam until recently. Every once in awhile, one would slip through. My spam filter seemed to block 99% of it...until 2, maybe 3 weeks ago. Now, its really getting on my nerves. I did notice it started when they announced some big spam master had been jailed. Think he setup a "time bomb" type spam? Is that possible? Did the Today show have any sort of solution for this? My Comcast email seems fine. |
No
They just talked about how companies continue to find new improvements to block these guys... and then the segments were about the people who fell victim to these scams. The same ones everyone here is saying they are getting. It was like a 2 day topic, and I'm sure Dateline covered it one night (the lottery scam). |
The spam is driving me insane too, when will it stop. Thank goodness for a junk box. When we went away on the weekend after getting home there were 28 of them in the junk box, now 2 to 4 a day still coming through. I delete and block them but more just seem to come through.
How the heck do you stop them ? I have A security service on the computer that is suppose to stop spam, well it aint working there. |
Same here! Its only been the last couple of weeks, I've never had spam before either. It really looks like they somehow got our email addys from this forum. I've been a member of other unrelated forums for years with the same email & never had spam.
Cassie |
That's true! there is something wrong with the e-mails! I've got a lot of spam since around 2 weeks and this daily!! I never had anything before and now I get all the rubbish and I have to delete it daily to so there must me something going on if it's not just me getting them! |
Same has happened with me. I am careful about who I give my e-mail address to and just over the past two weeks I have recieved tons of "you have won the lottery"! I haven't had a problem until the past two weeks. Ron, are getting them too? |
Me, too. I belong to tons of lists, yahoo groups and forums. My spam filter is set to the highest level, and I always got tons sent to my trash bucket immediately, with only a couple a day in my in-tray.
But the past two weeks I have been getting tons in both my trash and my in-tray. I have no idea why, but it might be time to re-check the SPAM filters on our individual email addresses. Maybe they need a re-set? |

I am so sick of this garbage!!! DITTO.....DOTTO.........DITTO.............. Also beware: I still don't know how it gets in but it is called "Contra Virus" It pretends to be a virus remover and gets in on your computer and you can't get it out . McAfee has a Forum and has a post about it. http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic. ... b660f45bbe It is very new and a pain in the A#% !! The link does help you get rid of it ., But it is not easy. I don't know if it is coming in with all this over Seas junk mail / lotto winner / scam mail, but I got the contra virus at the same time. Antoinette |
Wow, if this many people are suddenly getting spam, I'm starting to wonder if this forum is the connection. I'm crossing my fingers that my good account doesn't get it! After re-checking what account I have linked to this forum... I don't check that email account since it's junk, so I don't know if I'm getting it too. |
My email box has been getting an awful lot of spam lately as well. I have been getting stuff from the UK like crazy! I have no clue what I clicked on to make all that get my email address. I have also been getting Bank of America account information needed and I don't even have an account with them!! It's soooooo aggravating. |
SamSun's Mom wrote: I have also been getting Bank of America account information needed and I don't even have an account with them!! It's soooooo aggravating.
Just got one yesterday from them too. |
IMO, I don't think it is just this forum, reason why:
My sister who is AOL gets it and has never even used a forum of any kind. My Mom who does not do much on the computer but wright back and forth with her sisters gets it too. I am not sure how computer stuff really works but I am starting to think all of the FWD; e-mails people send to each other has something to do with it. If you think about it your e-mail address is on each FWD; people send to each other. The other day I got one that had something like 100 addresses on it. If someone gets that WOW could they have a SPAMING good time! Also , I listed something on Craigslist the othe day, thinking I got a responds I opened my mail and it was a Porn page link. I guess someone will always find a way to get in no matter what. Antoinette |

I got about 8 or 10 in the last week about money deals. I don't know how much this will help in cutting down on spam, but it hides the e-mail addresses when mail is forwarded. Helps with security IF everyone would do it. TO AVOID SPAM MAIL AND VIRUSES: 1. When you forward an e-mail, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message (at the top). You MUST click the "FORWARD" button first. Then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message. IF you don't click "Forward" FIRST, you won't be able to edit the message. Then highlight, backspace them, cut them, or whatever you know how to do, in order to delete them. 2. Whenever you send an e-mail to more than one person, do NOT use the To: or Cc: fields for adding e-mail addresse. Always use the BCC: (blind carbon copy) field for listing the e-mail address. This way people you send to, will only see their own e-mail address. If you don't see your BCC: option, click on where it says TO: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC and that's it, it's that easy. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say "Undisclosed Recipients in the "TO:" field of the people who receive it. 3. Remove any "FW:" in the subject line. You can re-name the subject if you wish or even fix spelling. 4. ALWAYS hit your Forward button from the actual e-mail you are reading. By forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view, you stop them from having to open many e-mails just to see what you sent. Finally, a good tip I got from someone named Ron: 5. Just about everything you receive in an e-mail that is in question can be checked out at Snopes. GO to: www.snopes.com . It's really easy to find out if it's real or not. Happy e-mailing everyone! |
Or just don't forward anything in general! I get the feeling some people get stuff and just hit forward so they can fill up someone else's mailbox with junk, too! |
My FIL forwards sooooooooo much stuff to my husband. He's got 10 pages of just his dad's FWs. I tell him to just delete them, but I guess my husband thinks he'll read them sometime. They've been unread since 03.
An occasional foward from a friend is funny but not daily. The people who think by forwarding an email they'll automatically win something or will be count towards some election/poll/petition crack me up the most. |
Im getting loads too....... |
I also just started getting this type of spam within the last two weeks, when I didn't have any before. . . |
It would certainly be interesting to know where it is all coming from. This morning I had 14 "Foreign" offers in my mail..
Just think, I could be RICH and don't even know it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish there was some "retaliatory action" to be taken, like FLOODING THEIR email boxes with email!!!!!!!!!!! |
I really think someone did hack into the forum.
My email addy was brand new in October and I have had zero spam until about 2 weeks ago. Now I'm flooded with 15 or more per day. I think it's too much of a coincidence for it to not be from someone hacking into the forum. Sucks. |
I hear you all.
While I get tons and tons of SPAM (and most of it gets filtered out before it gets to my inbox) I have seen an increase across the baord, not just in forum emails. Nontheless, I am searching my logs to see if there's anything out of the ordinary. |
I have several email addresses that I field and have noticed the spam for each address, so I wouldn't equate it to the forum. |
Hmmm...
Never had spam But I do now ...it started about 2 weeks ago maybe 3-4 a day Diane....wacky stuff too |
3shaggies wrote: Hmmm...
Never had spam But I do now ...it started about 2 weeks ago maybe 3-4 a day Diane....wacky stuff too Be glad for the 3-4 a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today alone I had 129 Bulk emails and ANOTHER 24 emails that made it into my mailbox informinging me I had won LOTS of money |
I don't understand how the spam can be connected to the forum. I think its just random spam....and it doesn't seem to be letting up. |
I don't think it could be connected to the forum either....
It would simply be too much effort to hack in and get one email addy at a time, there is no way to get them all at once here. Sure is annoying though. |
I'm on a few other forums and everyone is complaining
about increase spam. We just had an increase too and just weeks ago we would only get a few a month. Spamers getting more clever |
Do you block them from your computer when they get through, or just delete them? I block mine, and haven't been getting any more. |
how do you block them?? |
I "mark" them as spam (on Yahoo). But they can only block that address, and these keep coming from different addresses. Sucks |
hey i just actually got one from msn/yahoo about winning a lottery ...what the heck is THAT all about???????
lets see, if i actually won all the lotteries from all the countries they would include england france africa usa netherlands.... and i think im missing one.....what to do with all that money?? I know, Id get Panda a friend...and a personal groomer/vet |
HAHAHAHA, we ought to start a thread......WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd build a house with an INDOOR POOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
My husband would probably want some sheep, so I'm not sure if I want to win the lottery. |
well, if we are getting all technical about winning the lottery...Id build a second story above my garage that has a second bathroom, fill it with workout equipment and a nice large shoe closet....
Id also buy a nice beach bungelow in San Diego right on the beach that i could open the doors in the morning and drink my coffee listening to the waves and feel the morning fog..... Oh and maybe hire a housekeeper, but id have to ''train'' her to do things the way I like |

Highlight the e-mail you want to block. Click on Messages, then click block sender. I also forward the ones that are asking for personal info that I know are fraud to: enforcement@sec.gov mouthypf |
sec.gov might be for stock promotions, but I wouldn't bother them with it.
If you're really frustrated with the spam, it might be better to sign up with spamcop.net and report and/or forward the spam to them so that the spammer gets added real-time to a list that can be used to block some spam. |
I thought it was just me. I can't believe how many times I have won the lottery in the U.K., or some African bank has all this money for me. I also can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to give them all that personal info. I just keep reporting it as spam...maybe it will stop soon. I am glad I am not alone. |
Anonymous wrote: Darcy wrote: how do you block them?? Highlight the e-mail you want to block. Click on Messages, then click block sender. I also forward the ones that are asking for personal info that I know are fraud to: enforcement@sec.gov mouthypf That only blocks that specific address though. Since the spam usually comes from different addresses, you can't really effectively block them that way. You're actually better off filtering key words, like lottery or Nigeria to automatically go to your trash. |
Latest email.. "Are you dead.." VERY tempting to reply to this one, "Yes I am, so leave me alone!" |
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I had an odd experience last week. I was SO SICK of the "you have won_____" emails that I started to reply to each and every one....MISTAKE. I had a rather lengthy email in VERY LARGE LETTERS which gave my impression (one word) of their offer. Basically said HORSEPUKEY (well not quite so nice). SEVERAL OF THEM SENT ME A RESPONSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yikes. Now I just mark them all as spam and don't even lreas them. |
Geez...(I'm afraid to say this out loud) but...I think they slowing declining in numbers. Yesterday, I only received about 4, while before I was getting about 20 a day! I'm keeping my fingers crossed! |
There has been a slight decline. But I have also noticed that I mark them as "spam", my spam filter is picking up more and more and filtering them out.
The "BIGGIE" this week are casino offers. |
I've had several "Urgent Business Matters" lately...
Oh, and I did get one from 'Bank of America' saying my online banking has been blocked...When I saw the title I thought, Oh no! But then I was like, wait a minute...and went to my Bank of America account online and everything was fine and I didn't open that bad email. I could see how some people are fooled with ones like this where you actually do business with the company that they are claiming to be... |
I got the Bank of America one too today. Geez I don't even live in America.
Only 4 today, thank goodness, hopefully the blocking of them when they come into my junk box is working. |
