I actually took Kelsey off it as she has been acting weird, going out to pee and doing it then does not want to come in and still going around the yard and squatting all over the place and trying to pee more with nothing coming out as she had already emptied out. I took her off it just over a week ago and no more of this type of behaviour happening, she has stiffened up a bit since taking her off the medication but the other behaviour which started happening worried me as I thought it might be afffecting her kidneys or something like that? So has anyone had this type of thing happen while on long term use of Metacam? I have uped her natural stuff to hopefully compensate for the rickety ol backend & to keep her comfortable, but just not confident on using the Metacam every day now, only going to give it to her when she is feeling it, because of what has been happening there in the pee department. That has stopped now and she is back to normal with peeing since no more metacam. |

That side effect sounds really strange. If anything I think Metacam might make them constipated since it's an anti-inflammatory. Haven't had any problems the couple of times our dogs were on it. Almost sounds like she had a UTI but weird that it cleared up when you took her off of it. Maybe it was making her bladder muscles relaxed or something. |
Hi Lisa-
Give the vet a quick call if there has been a notable change. There are some side effects listed here and it can affect the kidneys. One of the things they said to watch for is... Change in urination habits (frequency, color, or smell) Source: http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2006/506_nsaid.html Please keep us posted on how she's doing. |
Thanks Jaci, I will be calling the vet tomorrow and telling him her peeing habit that started happening over the last month while she was on it, she has been on the metacam since the start of the year, and really strange that it stopped as soon as I took her off the medication and she is just peeing normal now.
That link explained a lot, she also had an increase in water consumption so something was not quite right there and that has settled down too. Again thanks for the information and response I think I have done the right thing there and taken her off the medication so will see what the vet says about it all. |
Lisa - any update on Kelsey? Is she feeling okay? What did the vet say about the Metacam? |
Tammy the vet said to stop using it, I don't have to take her in unless the pee department & water consumption changes. It was having an effect there in the last month but she is back to normal, so hopefully no permanent degeneration of the Kidneys. If anything changes, have to take her in for a blood profile to compare with the one she had done 18 months ago when she went under for an Operation.
So hopefully all is well and now looking at natural stuff to help the cruciate/pain problem. With the DM there is nothing I can do and she does not feel any pain, she gets the pain from the cruciate, so maybe back to those green lipped mussel supplements in the next few day. Sucks getting elderly. I lost my other sheepie at 14 due to total backend failure even bowel incontinenece and had to have her put to sleep. So hopefully I can keep this princess comfortable and still mobile over the colder months on natural supplements. |
I hope so, too, Lisa. It's awful getting old. I do hope Kelsey will be pain free and mobile for a long time to come. |
Emily is 9 (and 70 pounds) and has been on Metacam about a year. The vet wanted us to get her dosage as low as possible while still getting the pain control, so after she had been on it a few months and seemed like her old self again, we reduced the dose. She originally started at the 70 pound dose once a day, then went down (over several months) to the 20 pound dose once every other day. We did try taking her off it completely, but the pain returned after a few days. We are currently trying giving her the 20 pound dose once every three days, but the jury is still out. |
Hi emilys mom, there is a lot I know that have been using the metacam daily over a long period of time and had wonderful success there in helping them and the pain factor in there sheepies.
It just did not agree with my elderly girl she was on it for 6 months and we had problems with the last month till I stopped it all together. I have a friend who's sheepie was on it daily for 4 years till old age took it's toll and they had wonderful results with no problems what-so-ever, actually extended his life and mobility, living till 15 years old. I think it is just being aware of the possible side effects(thanks Jaci )and knowing that and being aware of any different changes to them with the long term use. I think highly of the Metacam and I know people have had wonderful success with it in managing the pain factor, just this was not for mine for long term use even in lower dosages. It is a gentler anti-inflam on their system then things like Rimadyl and I don't think as many side effects with the long term use. Natural supplements are working ok for her at the moment and we got through a cold winter here, bit stiffer, sometimes bit harder to get up then normal but she is doing OK so far for a sheepie that is nearly 13. Is emily also taking daily supplements like Chondroiton/glucosamine in her diet as well? That helps tremendously too for the joints and pain too and be can used in conjunction with the metacam as well to help. |
Lisa, have you tried Dermaxx? Beau was on it for almost two years and did well, we also gave him milk thistle to help support his liver. |
Chum was on Deramaxx for a couple months and it worked great at first but then it just seemed to stop working. Now she has been on Metacam for a month and she is happy and active again -- going up and down the stairs, bouncing up and down to greet people, bunnyhopping to the car (her favorite hangout), and just generally looking cheerful and willing instead of sulky and obstinate.
It took several weeks before the metacam seemed to kick in. They said I should see improvement in about 10 days but it really took about 3 weeks. I took her in for bloodwork yesterday just to make sure there aren't any hidden side effects. My vet likes to test about 6 weeks or so after starting a new drug. I am hoping for good results. |
Hi Lisa,
Blue went on Metacam last April. I've had no problems as of yet . Let me know what the vet suggest and I'd appreciate it as I've noticed the Metacam is not as effective as previously. I think Metacam had different effects on different dogs as in Blue's case the med had immediate results the next day which I hadn't thought possible. Someone else I know, ended up giving me their full bottle as when their dog took it only once it made them sick. Before Blue was on it he had been on Glucosamine for years but eventually it was no longer helping and he needed the stronger stuff. I am hoping you'll find an alternative for beautiful Kelsey. Blue is sending big kisses to Kelsey and wishes she'll feel better soon. Belly rubs from me. Marianne |

My vet says that if something doesn't seem to be working anymore, try something else. There are so many choices and sometimes the positive impact of one just doesn't last while something else may last longer. I've tried about 4 different NSAIDs with Chum so far: Rimadyl, Etogesic, Deramaxx and now Metacam. Different dogs will respond differently to each one. Good luck! |
I agree with Val Marianne, blue might need a swap to another form of NSAIDs. Might pay you to try another now if the Metacam seems to not be doing much. Doesn't hurt to give another type ago and see how that goes for him.
Kelsey is on nothing, just natural supplements, Seatone (green lipped mussels) and the Glucosamine/chondroiton daily. The Seatone is a natural anti-inflam, but takes about 6 weeks to notice any relief there. Working well for her at the moment, we got through winter and she was comforatable with the occassional help up from me if she was a bit stiff from snoozing too long. Now the weather is warmer she at the moment is doing great. Of course if any problems happening with her, I will be trying another NSAID's with her if needed and see how we go with a different one. Holly Milk thistle? How much do you give them in conjunction with using Dermaxx? Would love to know for the future just in case. |
Thanks for the info Valerie and Lisa!
Oh yeah Milk Thistle!!! , forgot about that too...haven't ever used it on Blue but it did wonders for my previous girl Shaggy!! That was one of the three natural drugs I had her on. She had immune deficiency thrombocytopenia, despite that, she went to live on to a grand ole age of 15 1/2. I swore by it. Marianne |
Lisa, I don't remember for sure but I think it was double the listed human dose, divided into 3x daily. I'll check one of my books to be sure. |
Thanks so much really appreciate that, look forward to the info. |
Our vet just put our 15.5 year old male husky on Metacam. He has been on it for a week and now started to have problems. He stopped lifting his leg when he urinates. Making it easier to see that he was trying to go pee but couldn't. I could see his muscles flex from trying. Does this go away once treatment is stopped? Does this stuff cause bladder infections or something? I know how painful bladder infections can be and the feeling of having to go but not being able too. Besides stopping the medication, what can we do? He has also stopped drinking and it is summer in AZ. Is there a way to make a dog go pee? |
If he's stopped drinking and cant pee I would call the prescribing vet as a matter of urgency.
Inability to empty the bladder can cause kidney damage very quickly and is very painful too. |
Get your dog to the vet immediately. |
For people who do not know this.
NEVER,NEVER, give Metacam to a dog with bleeding disorders. |
