New Update on Simon

We went to Vegas from Monday to Thursday and today took Simon to the Vet again today because he is still not eating. While we were gone we called for daily updates. He was acting fine, playing, and drinking plenty of water. Doreen, my great friend who took the dogs while we were gone, said that he ate a bite of food a few times a day. Not enough to keep a bird alive. He's gone from 74lbs to 65lbs. The Vet took a chest x-ray and he found nothing unusual except that Simon has nothing in his tummy or intestines. The Vet has NO idea what is wrong. He gave us some medicine that is supposed to increase his appatite(sp) and give him canned stinky food and see if he will eat that. I gave him some scrambled eggs after we got home and he ate that. I do not want to get this dog hooked on human food but I don't know what else to do. I'm going to try the canned food as soon as I get to the store(tonite). I just do not understand what the heck is going on with him, he's gone from a dog that eats 3 cups of food a day to almost nothing in just a few days. Any suggestions from anyone who had this problem or anything like this would be terrific!!

Was he just upset over you being gone?
I would say the same thing, maybe he was just missing you and fretting, I have had that with one of mine when we went on Holidays, she hardly ate when we were away & she was at my moms, came home and as soon as she was home, has not stopped eating since.

Try sardines mixed in over some dry food, they seem to love that stinky fish, I do that with mine if they are off there food and they gulp that down.

With the canned food you can also just mix some of that into the dry, but first try it on its own to see if he will eat it firstly.

Another thing to try is cooked chicken with a little bit of chicken broth in with his dry also, that is tempting to them too, mix it in well with the dry.

Best wishes hopefully now simon is home he will return to normal eating habits
Hopefully he just missed you. When I had a dog I was worried about eating, I'd give him mackerel. That seemed to snap even the most reluctant eater out of their funk.

You may have to take overnight trips just to train him that you will return, no reason to stop eating.
I don't know how long you were gone, but my OES Winston has absolutely terrible separation anxiety if we leave him for more than a day. He's ok to stay with my in-laws...I suppose he thinks of them as part of his herd! But before we realized what was happening, we would leave him for long weekends at the vet/border, and he would absolutely not eat or drink a bite. The last time was an actual vacation - a week - and he started going into kidney/liver failure. That vet said, "You might not believe this, but his only problem in the world is that you're gone". I can't remember the amount of weight he lost that time, but for a 1.5 year old, it was a lot!

After some IV fluids we got him slowly eating some super expensive Rx doggy food (can't remember what it was called). We've never left him for more than a night again, and he's been fine for the last 9 years.

I hope it's just that for your Simon...and if you have to be gone, you'll just have to have to plan for him to stay with someone else he's got a bond with. For us, it works best if my in-laws just stay at our house when they're keeping him for us.
How old is he? I can't remember if he's a growing pup but I know as my guys have gotten older, their dietary needs changed and seemingly pretty quickly. I know he had the excitement of Sheepiepalooza, plus it's been hot and then he was away from his family for a few days-- all stuff that usually decreases appetite. Maybe he's just slowing down and the other factors have sped everything up? I hope everything's ok and it's just normal stuff!
That is so weird that Simon is STILL not eating. I haven't a clue at all what is going on with him. Have you searched the internet for like symptoms? There has got to be a simple reason for all of this. I know it must be hard on you and Randy trying to figure out what to do. Good Luck! I'm still praying for you.
Our first sheepdog, Prince had a similar experience.
We went on vacation for one week and left him at
a kennel where included was a play time and individual
walks. He hardly slept and barely ate. He lost quite a bit
of weight. Our vet checked him and felt he was
depressed and feared we had left him. Needless to
say, we never did a kennel stay again.

We introduced some human food, like hamburger/steak
with his kibble. We resumed our usual routine
and he came back to his usual happy loving self.

It may have been missing you combined with being in
a strange place that upset him.

Give him lots of love and care, and if it continues a
recheck with the Vet would be in order.
If I remember correctly this started before you went away so I would not attribute it to that...

It's very strange that your vet can't find anything wrong.

What would worry me with all the food recalls is that perhaps he senses something is wrong with the food.
Maybe try a new bag of food (not a new brand) and see if he'll eat it.
It might have gone bad or been a bad batch.
All the different reasons listed above can lead to loss of appetite. . . but it stinks not to have a clear explanation. How long has it been? Have they done bloodwork on him?
Any news on Simon? Has he eaten much this weekend?
I keep checking for updates too. I hope he is doing better!
My first OES, Merlin, was a very food oriented dog. He was also devoted to his family. At one point, my oldest son was living in an apartment in town and working nights at the local newspaper. My husband had a chance to attend a conference out of town, and take me with, so we decided to take the younger children to their grandparents in a different state, and fly to the conference in Boston ourselves. Knowing how much Merlin loved our oldest--they grew up together--we asked our son to stay in the house for the 5 days we'd be gone, to keep Merlin company. It was an ideal situation as my son's job was late evenings, when Merlin slept. They'd have all day together, and Merlin would be in his own home, with his regular routine--except for the rest of the family.

My son called us the first day, saying that Merlin wouldn't eat. Except, if my son fed him by hand. And then, only a little at a time. Or a little cheese. Or chicken. By hand. He was drinking water well. No diarrhea, regular movements. Oh, and they had to sleep in OUR bed because Merlin insisted on sleeping in bed with my son and his old bed was too small for both of them. Now, Merlin once conned the whole family into feeding him dinner 4 times in one night, and would do absolutely anything for a piece of cheese or chicken. Not eating was normally a sign of serious illness. Or extreme deviousness. He did not sleep in bed with anyone. He was a wonderful dog--and a brilliant con artist. I explained to my son that Merlin just missed his family and that my son was being had.

Mind you, Merlin and my son were absolutely best buddies--loved each other dearly. Dearly. As much as boy and dog ever loved each other. But Merlin missed everybody and was always happiest if ALL of us were home, preferably in the same room, with him in the center. If there was food, even better.

Hopefully, Simon was just missing his family.
