What does headbutting mean?

OK, this ight be a silly question, but I noticed that when I let Stella close enough to Brooklyn to smell her, she nudges her hard with her snout, sortof like a head-butt. Stella was lying on the floor, and Brooklyn was on my lap, and Stella just kept nudging Brooklyn like that. She also does it if they are standing up. Is this a sheepie thing?

She's probably trying to flip her over. That's Clyde signature move, too. He also likes to run really low to the ground, get under Bear and stand up with the headbutt for maximum flip effectiveness. Bear's so big and heavy, all it really does is knock him off balance but it's funny to watch nonetheless.
Laika does that she looks like a bull!
Sometimes I think they nudge for attention. Like a look at me, scratch me or play with me kind of thing. If doing it to another dog and it doesn't seem aggressive I would think it was a kind of play invitation.

That's my thought. Though, unlike Clyde, Barkley generally reserves this move for smaller dogs (golden retriever/poodle crosses, cockerpoos, miniature daschunds, puggles), children and inanimate objects. I think he's trying to flip them either to (a) get the treats out, or (b) get them to play with him (this includes the inanimate objects).

Though it may seem hard to you, it could just be that Stella has no idea how strong she is. Barkley's a year old, and still has very little concept of how physically strong he is (he's got the bite inhibition down pat, but not always the sitting on people, pushing people, pulling people, holding down other dogs in play, etc... parts). If Stella's hurting Brooklyn, Brooklyn should let her know, unless she's unable to, by yelping, or running away.
Hmmm... I always thought jabbing hard with their snout was a "don't mess with me" manuever. Speaking from experience, it really leaves a bruise, too, if you get in the middle!

Winston used to nudge me...pushing his snout into my hip or stomach. It was kinda like a poke as if to say "hey...remember me?" I never though it was an aggressive thing.
:D:D Beauford does this to Cheyenne all the time, like he's trying to flip her like a pancake. Only problem is Cheyenne outweighs Beauford by 40 pounds so he ends weaving in and out of her legs as she runs away. I have to agree, it is funny to watch.
I call mine Butt Heads, seems to be a sheepie trait. That big black nudging nose, I say to visitors WATCH OUT, never turn around or you might get that nudge where you don't want it.
Wow, thanks for all the great responses! I kinda thought it might be a Sheepie thing. I don't get the impression it's aggressive either, just funny looking. The flipping over thing makes sense. Tonight she did it to her baby and made it squeak... kinda made me wonder if she's trying to make Brooklyn squeak... she does kind of look like a toy, lol.
We call Miss Rags - a Bulldozer. She bulldozes us with her head to get attention.
Funny this came up today. I am dog sitting my girlfriend's teacup poodle this weekend. Her name is Molly and she's stayed with us several times, so she's very familiar with the lay of the land around here, and all 96 lbs of Winston.

Today, she's found her bossiness. She is standing right in front of Winston (she comes up to about his knees), looking up at him and yipping ferociously. Well, as ferocious as a 3 lb dog can be, anyway.

Winston looks at her and gives her a head but. She is sent backward about 3 feet. She charges right back and repeats. She gets head butted again.

This has been going on for 10 minutes. Neither of them are giving up. She's really telling him off and he's quite amused. He keeps looking over at me and I swear he's smirking.

He's not being agressive with her at all. But he's having a lot of fun messing with the little twerp.

Patch does this too - she nudges me hard but i interpret this to mean, "hurry up!" while I am either fixing her food, taking her for a walk, getting her a treat, getting up in the morn to take her out, etc. She is not patient with certain things and nudges me so hard that it hurts at times. When my friend has kept her for me while I am out of town, she also mentioned to me about the hard nudge telling her to hurry up for whatever reason. I always thought it was a sheepie thing along the lines of herding.
I have a sheepdog that nudges frequently. After some research on the breed I found that because they are from the herding family, that is a strong trait they have. They nudge to herd animals. It is a friendly gesture just to get attention. Although quite embarassing when company comes over!
Chauncey is a nudger and just recently kicked it up a knotch. We finally had our fence installed :cheer: so we've been able to really romp & play. He now likes to run full force and hit me with his chest like a linebacker.

LOL... I see padded equipment in your future. I am having my fence installed soon, and I can't wait! Stella is doing SO much better in the house, and eventually I want to have it so that she can be left in the house while I am gone without being in her crate. It has been very tough without a fenced yard though. I hate trying to play with her in the yard while she's on her dog-tie... I'm always scared she'll get going really fast and yank herself silly. Now that we have Sampson, we really need a big place for them to be able to romp and play.
It's a good thing that I'm the football fan in the family.
The fence is WONDERFUL!!!! It truely was worth the price.
